Hechos 17
1 Cuando pasaron por Anfípolis y Apolonia, llegaron a Tesalónica, donde había una sinagoga de los judíos.
When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.
2 Y Pablo, como solía hacerlo, entró a ellos, y en tres días de reposo tuvo conversaciones con ellos de parte de las santas Escrituras,
As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
3 Diciéndoles clara y abiertamente que Cristo tuvo que morir y resucitar de los muertos; y que este Jesús, a quien, les estoy predicando, es el Cristo.
explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ,” he declared.
4 Y algunos de ellos tenían fe, y se unieron a Pablo y Silas; y una cantidad de griegos temerosos de Dios y algunas de las principales mujeres.
Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few leading women.
5 Pero los judíos, movidos por la envidia, llevaron consigo a algunas personas humildes de entre la gente común, y reuniendo a un gran número de personas, hicieron una protesta en la ciudad, atacando la casa de Jasón con el propósito de sacarlos a la gente.
The Jews, however, became jealous. So they brought in some troublemakers from the marketplace, formed a mob, and sent the city into an uproar. They raided Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas, hoping to bring them out to the people.
6 Y como no pudieron alcanzarlos, tomaron por la fuerza a Jasón y algunos de los hermanos, a los príncipes de la ciudad, y gritaron: Estos hombres, que han causado problemas en todo el mundo, han venido ahora aquí;
But when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some other brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have now come here,
7 A quienes tomó Jasón en su casa; y están actuando contra las órdenes de César, diciendo que hay otro rey, que es Jesús.
and Jason has welcomed them into his home. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, named Jesus!”
8 Oyendo estas cosas, el pueblo y los príncipes de la ciudad se turbaron.
On hearing this, the crowd and city officials were greatly disturbed.
9 Y habiendo hecho que Jasón y los demás dieron una fianza, y los dejaron ir.
And they collected bond from Jason and the others, and then released them.
10 Y los hermanos enseguida enviaron a Pablo y a Silas de noche a Berea; y ellos, cuando llegaron, fueron a la sinagoga de los judíos.
As soon as night had fallen, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went into the Jewish synagogue.
11 Ahora bien, estos eran más nobles que los judíos de Tesalónica, porque prestaron seria atención a la palabra, buscando en las Sagradas Escrituras todos los días, para ver si estas cosas eran así.
Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.
12 Y muchos de ellos creyeron, tanto mujeres griegas de alto rango como hombres.
As a result, many of them believed, along with quite a few prominent Greek women and men.
13 Pero cuando los judíos de Tesalónica tuvieron noticias de que Pablo estaba predicando la palabra en Berea, vinieron allí, y alborotaron a la gente.
But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that Paul was also proclaiming the word of God in Berea, they went there themselves to incite and agitate the crowds.
14 Entonces los hermanos enviaron a Pablo directamente al mar; pero Silas y Timoteo se quedaron allí.
The brothers immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas and Timothy remained in Berea.
15 Pero los que fueron con Pablo lo llevaron hasta Atenas; y habiendo recibido órdenes para Silas y Timoteo, de que viniesen a él lo más pronto posible.
Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then returned with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.
16 Mientras Pablo los esperaba en Atenas, su espíritu se turbó, porque él veía toda la ciudad llena de imágenes de los dioses.
While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply disturbed in his spirit to see that the city was full of idols.
17 Así que tuvo discusiones en la sinagoga con los judíos y los gentiles temerosos de Dios, y todos los días en el mercado con los que estaban allí.
So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and God-fearing Gentiles, and in the marketplace with those he met each day.
18 Y algunos de los partidarios de las teorías de los epicúreos y los estoicos se reunieron con él. Y algunos dijeron: ¿De qué habla este charlatan? Y otros, parece ser un predicador de dioses extranjeros: porque él estaba predicando acerca de Jesús y su resurrección.
Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was proclaiming the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.
19 Y lo llevaron al Areópago, diciendo: ¿Podrías aclararnos cuál es esta nueva enseñanza tuya?
So they took Paul and brought him to the Areopagus, where they asked him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?
20 Porque parece que nos dicen cosas extrañas, y tenemos el deseo de entenderlas.
For you are bringing some strange notions to our ears, and we want to know what they mean.”
21 (Ahora todos los atenienses y los hombres de otras tierras que vienen allí dedican todo su tiempo a hablar o escuchar algo nuevo).
Now all the Athenians and foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing more than hearing and articulating new ideas.
22 Y Pablo se puso de pie en el Areópago y dijo: ¡Oh, hombres de Atenas, veo que ustedes son demasiado religiosos!
Then Paul stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that in every way you are very religious.
23 Porque cuando pasé, estaba mirando las cosas a las que alabas, y vi un altar con esta escritura en él, PARA ÉL DIOS NO CONOCIDO. Ahora, lo que ustedes, sin conocimiento, rinden culto, yo les hablo.
For as I walked around and examined your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore what you worship as something unknown, I now proclaim to you.
24 El Dios que hizo la tierra y todo lo que en ella hay, él, que es Señor del cielo y de la tierra, no está en edificios hechos con manos;
The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by human hands.
25 Y no depende del trabajo de las manos de los hombres, como si tuviera necesidad de algo, porque él mismo da a todos la vida y el aliento y todas las cosas;
Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
26 Y él ha hecho de una sangre todas las naciones de hombres que viven en toda la faz de la tierra, ordenando sus tiempos y él lugar en que deben de vivir,
From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.
27 para que puedan buscar a Dios, si en alguna manera, palpando, puedan hallarle, aunque él no está lejos de cada uno de nosotros:
God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.
28 Porque en él tenemos vida, movimiento y existencia; como algunos de sus escritores de versos han dicho, porque somos su descendencia.
‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are His offspring.’
29 Si entonces somos descendientes de Dios, no es correcto que tengamos la idea de que Dios es como oro, plata o piedra, formado por el arte o el diseño del hombre.
Therefore, being offspring of God, we should not think that the Divine Being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by man’s skill and imagination.
30 Aquellos tiempos en que los hombres no tenían conocimiento fueron pasados por alto por Dios; pero ahora da órdenes a todos los hombres en cada lugar para experimentar un cambio de corazón:
Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now commands all people everywhere to repent.
31 Porque se ha fijado un día en el que todo el mundo será juzgado en justicia, por el hombre que ha sido marcado por él para esta obra; de lo cual ha dado una prueba a todos los hombres cuando lo resucitó.
For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”
32 Al escuchar sobre la resurrección, algunos de ellos se burlaban, pero otros dijeron: Vamos a profundizar más en esto en otro momento.
When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to mock him, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this topic.”
33 Entonces Pablo se fue de entre ellos.
At that, Paul left the Areopagus.
34 Pero algunos hombres le dieron su apoyo: entre los cuales estaba Dionisio el Areopagita, y una mujer llamada Dámaris, y otros con ellos.
But some joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others who were with them.
