2 Samuel 18
1 Y David contó las personas que estaban con él, y puso sobre ellas a capitanes de miles y capitanes de cientos.
And David having reviewed his people, appointed over them captains of thousands and of hundreds,
2 Y envió David al pueblo, un tercio de ellos bajo las órdenes de Joab, y un tercero bajo las órdenes de Abisai, hijo de Sarvia, el hermano de Joab, y un tercero bajo Itai, de Gat. Y el rey dijo al pueblo: Y yo mismo saldré contigo.
And sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abisai the son of Sarvia Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ethai, who was of Geth: and the king said to the people: I also will go forth with you.
3 Pero la gente dijo: Es mejor que no salgas; porque si huimos, no les importa, y si la mitad de nosotros muere, no será nada para ellos; pero tú eres más valioso que diez mil de nosotros, por lo tanto, es mejor que estés listo para venir en nuestra ayuda desde esta ciudad.
And the people answered: Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not much mind us: or if half of us should fall, they will not greatly care: for thou alone art accounted for ten thousand: it is better therefore that thou shouldst be in the city to succour us.
4 Y el rey les dijo: Haré lo que sea mejor para ustedes. Entonces el rey tomó su lugar junto a la puerta de la ciudad, y todas las personas salieron por cientos y por miles.
And the king said to them: What seemeth good to you, that will I do. And the king stood by the gate: and all the people went forth by their troops, by hundreds and by thousands.
5 Entonces el rey dio órdenes a Joab, a Abisai y a Itai, diciendo: Por consideración a él, sé amable con el joven Absalón. Y esta orden sobre Absalón fue dada en la audiencia de todas las personas.
And the king commanded Joab, and Abisai, and Ethai, saying: Save me the boy Absalom. And all the people heard the king giving charge to all the princes concerning Absalom.
6 Entonces el pueblo salió al campo contra Israel, y la lucha tuvo lugar en los bosques de Efraín.
So the people went out into the field against Israel and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.
7 Y los siervos de David vencieron allí al pueblo de Israel, y aquel día hubo una gran destrucción, y veinte mil hombres fueron arrojados a la espada.
And the people of Israel were defeated there by David’s army, and a great slaughter was made that day of twenty thousand men.
8 Y la lucha se extendió por todo el país: y los bosques fueron responsables de más muertes que la espada.
And the battle there was scattered over the face of all the country, and there were many more of the people whom the forest consumed, than whom the sword devoured that day.
9 Y Absalón se encontró con algunos de los hombres de David. Y Absalón estaba sentado en su mula, y la mula fue debajo de las gruesas ramas de un gran árbol, y su cabeza quedó fija en el árbol y fue levantado entre la tierra y el cielo, y la bestia debajo de él continuó.
And it happened that Absalom met the servants of David, riding on a mule: and as the mule went under a thick and large oak, his head stuck in the oak: and while he hung between the heaven and the earth, the mule on which he rode passed on.
10 Y cierto hombre lo vio y dijo a Joab: Vi a Absalón colgando de un árbol.
And one saw this and told Joab, saying: I saw Absalom hanging upon an oak.
11 Y Joab dijo al hombre que le había dado la noticia: Si hubieras visto esto, ¿por qué no le pasaste la espada y te hubiera dado diez trocitos de plata y una banda para tu túnica?
And Joab said to the man that told him: If thou sawest him, why didst thou not stab him to the ground, and I would have given thee ten sicles of silver, and belt?
12 Y el hombre dijo a Joab: Aunque me hubieras dado mil pedazos de plata, no extendería mi mano contra el hijo del rey; porque al oírlo, el rey te dio órdenes a ti, a Abisai e Itai. diciendo: Cuida que el joven Absalón no se toque.
And he said to Joab: If thou wouldst have paid down in my hands a thousand pieces of silver, I would not lay my hands upon the king’s son: for in our hearing he king charged thee, and Abisai, and Ethai, saying: Save me the boy Absalom.
13 Y si le hubiera dado muerte hubiera sido en vano, nada se puede mantener en secreto del rey, y tú mismo estarías en contra.
Yea and if I should have acted boldly against my own life, this could not have been hid from the king, and wouldst thou have stood by me?
14 Entonces Joab dijo: Yo lo habría hecho seguro para ti. Y tomó tres lanzas en su mano, y las puso en el corazón de Absalón, mientras aún vivía, en las ramas del árbol.
And Joab said: Not as thou wilt, but will set upon him in thy sight. So he took three lances in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom: and whilst he yet panted for life, sticking on the oak,
15 Y diez jóvenes, siervos de Joab, rodearon a Absalón y le pusieron fin.
Ten young men, armourbearers of Joab, ran up, and striking him slew him.
16 Y Joab hizo sonar el cuerno, y la gente volvió de ir tras Israel, porque Joab los retuvo.
And Joab sounded the trumpet, and kept back the people from pursuing after Israel in their flight, being willing to spare he multitude.
17 Tomaron el cuerpo de Absalón y lo pusieron en una fosa profunda en el bosque, y pusieron sobre él una gran cantidad de piedras, y todos los hombres de Israel se fueron a su tienda.
And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the forest, and they laid an exceeding great heap of stories upon him: but all Israel fled to their own dwellings.
18 Ahora, Absalón, antes de su muerte, se había erigido una columna en el valle del rey, dándole su nombre; porque dijo: No tengo un hijo que guarde mi nombre en la memoria, y hasta hoy se llama pilar de Absalón.
Now Absalom had reared up for himself, in his lifetime, a pillar, which is in the king’s valley: for he said: I have no son, and this shall be the monument of my name. And he called the pillar by is own name, and it is called the hand of Absalom, to this day.
19 Entonces Ahimaas, hijo de Sadoc, dijo: Déjame ir y dale al rey noticias de cómo el Señor ha actuado correctamente en su causa contra los que tomaron las armas contra él.
And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said: I will run and tell the king, that the Lord hath done judgment for him from the hand of his enemies.
20 Y Joab dijo: Hoy no recibirás noticias; otro día puedes darle las noticias, pero hoy no recibirás noticias, porque el hijo del rey está muerto.
And Joab said to him: Thou shalt not be the messenger this day, but shalt bear tidings another day: this day I will not have thee bear tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
21 Entonces Joab dijo al Cusita: Ve y dale al rey la palabra de lo que has visto. Y el Cusita, haciendo una señal de respeto a Joab, salió corriendo.
And Joab said to Chusai: Go, and tell the king what thou hast seen. Chusai bowed down to Joab, and ran.
22 Entonces Ahimaas, el hijo de Sadoc, le dijo otra vez a Joab: Sea lo que sea lo que pueda suceder, déjame ir tras el Cusita. Y Joab dijo: ¿Por qué tienes ganas de irte, hijo mío, ya que no obtendrás ninguna recompensa por tus noticias?
Then Achimaas the son of Sadoc said to Joab again: Why might not I also run after Chusai? And Joab said to him: Why wilt thou run, my son? thou wilt not be the bearer of good tidings.
23 Lo que sea que venga de esto, él dijo: Yo iré. Entonces él le dijo: Ve. Así que Ahimaas fue corriendo por el camino de tierras bajas y alcanzó al Cusita.
He answered: But what if I run? And he said to him: Run. Then Achimaas running by a nearer way passed Chusai.
24 Y se sentó David entre las dos puertas de la ciudad; y el vigilante subió al techo de las puertas, en la pared, y, levantando los ojos, vio a un hombre corriendo solo.
And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman that was on the top of the gate upon the wall, lifting up his eyes, saw a man running alone.
25 Y el vigilante le dio la noticia al rey. Y el rey dijo: Si él viene solo, entonces tiene noticias. Y el hombre viajaba rápido, y se acercó.
And crying out he told the king: and the king said: If he be alone, there are good tidings in his mouth. And as he was coming apace, and drawing nearer,
26 Entonces el vigilante vio a otro hombre corriendo: y gritando en dirección a la puerta, dijo: Aquí hay otro hombre corriendo solo. Y el rey dijo: Él, como el otro, viene con noticias.
The watchman saw another man running, and crying aloud from above, he said: I see another man running alone. And the king said: He also is a good messenger.
27 Y el vigilante dijo: Me parece que correr el primero es como correr de Ahimaas, el hijo de Sadoc. Y el rey dijo: Es un buen hombre, y sus noticias serán buenas.
And the watchman said: The running of the foremost seemeth to me like the running of Achimaas the son of Sadoc. And the king said: He is a good man: and cometh with good news.
28 Entonces Ahimaas, clamando al rey, dijo: Está bien. Y cayendo delante del rey, con su faz a la tierra, dijo: ¡Alabado sea el Señor, tu Dios, que ha entregado a los hombres que tomaron las armas contra mi señor el rey!
And Achimaas crying out, said to the king: God save thee, O king. And falling down before the king with his face to the ground, he said: Blessed be the Lord thy God, who hath shut up the men that have lifted up their hands against the lord my king.
29 Y el rey dijo: ¿Está bien con el joven Absalón? Y Ahimaas respondió en respuesta: Cuando Joab me envió a mí, su sirviente, vi una gran protesta, pero no tenía conocimiento de lo que era.
And the king said: Is the young man Absalom safe? And Achimaas said: I saw a great tumult, O king, when thy servant Joab sent me thy servant: I know nothing else.
30 Y el rey dijo: Vuelve y toma tu lugar aquí. Entonces, girándose hacia un lado, tomó su lugar allí.
And the king said to him: Pass, and stand here.
31 Entonces vino el cusita y dijo: Tengo noticias para mi señor el rey, hoy el Señor ha hecho lo correcto en tu causa contra todos los que tomaron las armas contra ti.
And when he bad passed, and stood still, Chusai appeared: and coming up he said: I bring good tidings, my lord, the king, for the Lord hath judged for thee this day from the hand of all that have risen up against thee.
32 Y el rey dijo al cusita: ¿Está seguro el joven Absalón? Y el cusita dijo en respuesta: ¡Que todos los que odian al rey y los que hacen el mal contra el rey, sean como ese joven!
And the king said to Chusai: Is the young man Absalom safe? And Chusai answering him, said: Let the enemies of my lord, the king, and all that rise against him unto evil, be as the young man is.
33 Entonces el rey se conmovió mucho, y subió a la habitación que había junto a la puerta, llorando, y diciendo: ¡Oh, hijo mío, Absalón, hijo mío, mi hijo Absalón! ¡Ojalá mi vida hubiera sido dada por la tuya, oh Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!
The king therefore being much moved, went up to the high chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went he spoke in this manner: My son Absalom, Absalom my son: would to God that I might die for thee, Absalom my son, my son Absalom.
