1 Crónicas 19
1 Después de esto sucedió que la muerte llegó a Nahas, el rey de los hijos de Amón, y su hijo se convirtió en rey en su lugar.
Some time later, Nahash king of the Ammonites died and was succeeded by his son.
2 Y dijo David: Seré amigo de Hanun, el hijo de Nahas, porque su padre era amigo mío. Entonces David le envió hombres para que le dieran palabras de consuelo a causa de su padre. Y los siervos de David fueron a Hanun, a la tierra de los hijos de Amón, ofreciéndole consuelo.
And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to console Hanun concerning his father. But when David’s servants arrived in the land of the Ammonites to console him,
3 Pero los jefes de los hijos de Amón le dijeron a Hanun: ¿Te parece que David está honrando a tu padre, enviando consoladores? ¿No está claro que estos hombres solo han venido para recorrer la tierra y hacer una observación secreta de ella para que puedan vencerla?
the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Have not his servants come to you to explore the land, spy it out, and overthrow it?”
4 Entonces, Hanun tomó a los sirvientes de David, y cortándose el pelo y las faldas de sus ropas hasta las caderas, dejándolas al descubierto, después los despidió.
So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved their beards, cut off their garments at the hips, and sent them away.
5 Entonces ciertos hombres fueron y le dieron a David la noticia de lo que les habían hecho. Y él envió con el propósito de encontrarlos; porque los hombres fueron grandemente avergonzados. Y el rey dijo: Mantente en Jericó hasta que tu cabello vuelva a ser largo, y luego vuelve.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
6 Y cuando los hijos de Amón vieron que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Hanun y los hijos de Amón enviaron mil talentos de plata como pago por los carros de combate y tropas de caballería de Mesopotamia, Siria, Maaca y Soba.
When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, Aram-maacah, and Zobah.
7 Así que con este dinero tomaron a sueldo treinta y dos mil carros de guerra, y la ayuda del rey de Maaca y su gente, quienes vinieron y tomaron su posición frente a Medeba. Y los hijos de Amón se juntaron de sus pueblos para pelear.
So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, as well as the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba while the Ammonites came from their cities and marched out for battle.
8 Y al oírlo David, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de combatientes.
On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army of mighty men.
9 Entonces los hijos de Amón salieron y pusieron sus fuerzas en posición en el camino hacia la ciudad; y los reyes que habían venido estaban estacionados solos en el campo.
The Ammonites marched out and arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance to the city, while the kings who had come stayed by themselves in the open country.
10 Cuando Joab vio que sus fuerzas estaban en posición contra él delante y detrás de él, tomó a los mejores hombres de Israel y los puso en fila contra los arameos;
When Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Arameans.
11 Y el resto de la gente se puso en posición contra los hijos de Amón con Abisai, su hermano, a la cabeza.
And he placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai, who arrayed them against the Ammonites.
12 Y él dijo: Si los arameos son más fuertes y me superan, vengan en mi ayuda; y si los hijos de Amón te superan, acudiré en tu ayuda.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me,” said Joab, “then you will come to my rescue. And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your rescue.
13 Anímate y seamos fuertes para nuestro pueblo y para los pueblos de nuestro Dios; y que el Señor haga lo que le parezca bien.
Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in His sight.”
14 Entonces Joab y las personas que estaban con él avanzaron en la lucha contra los sirios, y huyeron éstos ante él.
So Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
15 Y cuando los hijos de Amón vieron la huida de los sirios, ellos mismos huyeron de Abisai, su hermano, y entraron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab volvió a Jerusalén.
When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before Joab’s brother Abishai, and they entered the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem.
16 Y cuando los sirios vieron que Israel los había vencido, enviaron hombres a buscar a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río, con Sofac, el capitán del ejército de Hadadezer, a la cabeza.
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17 Y se le dio a David una palabra de esto; y reunió a todo Israel, pasó por el Jordán y puso sus fuerzas en posición contra ellos. Y cuando las fuerzas de David estaban en posición contra los sirios, se inició la lucha.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, advanced toward the Arameans, and arrayed for battle against them. When David lined up to engage them in battle, they fought against him.
18 Y los sirios huyeron delante de Israel; y David puso a la espada a los hombres de siete mil carros de guerra arameos y cuarenta mil hombres de infantería, y mató a Sofac, el capitán del ejército.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army.
19 Y cuando los siervos de Hadad Ezer vieron que fueron vencidos por Israel, hicieron la paz con David y se convirtieron en sus siervos. Y Los sirios no ayudarían más a los hijos de Amón.
When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were unwilling to help the Ammonites anymore.
