Génesis 44

1 Y mandó José al mayordomo de su casa, diciendo: Llene los costales de estos varones de alimentos, cuanto pudieren llevar, y pon el dinero de cada uno en la boca de su costal;

Then he gave orders to the servant who was over his house, saying, Put as much food into the men's bags as will go into them, and put every man's money in the mouth of his bag;

2 y pondrás mi copa, la copa de plata, en la boca del costal del menor, con el dinero de su trigo. Y él hizo como dijo José.

And put my cup, my silver cup, in the youngest one's bag, with his money. So he did as Joseph said.

3 Venida la mañana, los hombres fueron despedidos con sus asnos.

And at dawn the men, with their asses, were sent away.

4 Saliendo ellos de la ciudad, que aún no se habían alejado, dijo José a su mayordomo: Levántate, y sigue a esos hombres; y cuando los alcanzares, diles: ¿Por qué habéis vuelto mal por bien?

And when they had gone only a little way out of the town, Joseph said to the servant who was over his house, Go after them; and when you overtake them, say to them, Why have you done evil in reward for good?

5 ¿No es ésta en la que bebe mi señor, y por la que suele adivinar? Habéis hecho mal en lo que hicisteis.

Is not this the cup from which my lord takes wine and by which he gets knowledge of the future? Truly, you have done evil.

6 Cuando él los alcanzó, les dijo estas palabras.

So he overtook them and said these words to them.

7 Y ellos le respondieron: ¿Por qué dice mi señor tales cosas? Nunca tal hagan tus siervos.

And they said to him, Why does my lord say such words as these? far be it from your servants to do such a thing:

8 He aquí, el dinero que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales, te lo volvimos a traer desde la tierra de Canaán; ¿cómo, pues, habíamos de hurtar de casa de tu señor plata ni oro?

See, the money which was in the mouth of our bags we gave back to you when we came again from Canaan: how then might we take silver or gold from your lord's house?

9 Aquel de tus siervos en quien fuere hallada la copa, que muera, y aun nosotros seremos siervos de mi señor.

If it comes to light that any of your servants has done this, let him be put to death, and we will be your lord's servants.

10 Y él dijo: También ahora sea conforme a vuestras palabras; aquel en quien se hallare, será mi siervo, y vosotros seréis sin culpa.

And he said, Let it be as you say: he in whose bag it is seen will become my servant; and you will not be responsible.

11 Ellos entonces se dieron prisa, y derribaron cada uno su costal en tierra, abrieron cada uno su costal.

Then every man quickly got his bag down and undid it.

12 Y buscó; desde el mayor comenzó, y acabó en el menor; y la copa fue hallada en el costal de Benjamín.

And he made a search, starting with the oldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was in Benjamin's bag.

13 Entonces ellos rasgaron sus vestidos, y cargó cada uno su asno, y volvieron a la ciudad.

Then in bitter grief they put the bags on the asses again and went back to the town.

14 Y llegó Judá con sus hermanos a casa de José, que aún estaba allí, y se postraron delante de él en tierra.

So Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house; and he was still there: and they went down on their faces before him.

15 Y les dijo José: ¿Qué obra es ésta que habéis hecho? ¿No sabéis que un hombre como yo sabe adivinar?

And Joseph said, What is this thing which you have done? had you no thought that such a man as I would have power to see what is secret?

16 Entonces dijo Judá: ¿Qué diremos a mi señor? ¿Qué hablaremos? ¿O con qué nos justificaremos? Dios ha descubierto la maldad de tus siervos: he aquí, nosotros somos siervos de mi señor, nosotros también, y aquel en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa.

And Judah said, What are we to say to my lord? how may we put ourselves right in his eyes? God has made clear the sin of your servants: now we are in your hands, we and the man in whose bag your cup was seen.

17 Y él respondió: Nunca yo tal haga; el varón en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa, aquel será mi siervo; vosotros id en paz a vuestro padre.

Then he said, Far be it from me to do so: but the man who had my cup will be my servant; and you may go back to your father in peace.

18 Entonces Judá se llegó a él, y dijo: Te ruego señor mío, que hable tu siervo una palabra en oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu enojo contra tu siervo, pues que tú eres como el Faraón.

Then Judah came near him, and said, Let your servant say a word in my lord's ears, and let not your wrath be burning against your servant: for you are in the place of Pharaoh to us.

19 Mi señor preguntó a sus siervos, diciendo: ¿Tenéis padre o hermano?

My lord said to his servants, Have you a father or a brother?

20 Y nosotros respondimos a mi señor: Tenemos un padre anciano, y un joven que le nació en su vejez, pequeño aún; y un hermano suyo murió, y él quedó solo de su madre, y su padre lo ama.

And we said to my lord, We have an old father and a young child, whom he had when he was old; his brother is dead and he is the only son of his mother, and is very dear to his father.

21 Y tú dijiste a tus siervos: Traédmelo, y pondré mis ojos sobre él.

And you said to your servants, Let him come down to me with you, so that I may see him.

22 Y nosotros dijimos a mi señor: El joven no puede dejar a su padre, porque si le dejare, su padre morirá.

And we said to my lord, His father will not let him go; for if he went away his father would come to his death.

23 Y dijiste a tus siervos: Si vuestro hermano menor no descendiere con vosotros, no veáis más mi rostro.

But you said to your servants, If your youngest brother does not come with you, you will not see my face again.

24 Aconteció pues, que cuando llegamos a mi padre tu siervo, le contamos las palabras de mi señor.

And when we went back to your servant, our father, we gave him an account of my lord's words.

25 Y dijo nuestro padre: Volved a comprarnos un poco de alimento.

And our father said, Go again and get us a little food.

26 Y nosotros respondimos: No podemos ir; si nuestro hermano fuere con nosotros, iremos; porque no podemos ver el rostro del varón, no estando con nosotros nuestro hermano el menor.

And we said, Only if our youngest brother goes with us will we go down; for we may not see the man's face again if our youngest brother is not with us.

27 Entonces tu siervo mi padre nos dijo: Vosotros sabéis que dos me dio a luz mi mujer;

And our father said to us, You have knowledge that my wife gave me two sons;

28 y el uno salió conmigo, y pienso de cierto que fue despedazado, y hasta ahora no le he visto;

The one went away from me, and I said, Truly he has come to a violent death; and from that time I have not seen him,

29 y si tomareis también éste de delante de mí, y le aconteciere algún desastre, haréis descender mis canas con dolor a la sepultura. (Sheol h7585)

If now you take this one from me, and some evil comes to him, you will make my grey head go down in sorrow to the underworld. (Sheol h7585)

30 Ahora, pues, cuando llegare yo a tu siervo mi padre, y el joven no fuere conmigo, porque su alma está ligada con el alma de él,

If then I go back to your servant, my father, without the boy, because his life and the boy's life are one,

31 sucederá que cuando él no vea al joven, morirá: y tus siervos harán descender las canas de tu siervo nuestro padre con dolor a la sepultura. (Sheol h7585)

When he sees that the boy is not with us, he will come to his death, and our father's grey head will go down in sorrow to the underworld. (Sheol h7585)

32 Porque tu siervo salió por fiador por el joven con mi padre, diciendo: Si no te lo volviere, entonces yo seré culpable para mi padre todos los días;

For I made myself responsible for the boy to my father, saying, If I do not give him safely back to you, let mine be the sin for ever.

33 te ruego pues que quede ahora tu siervo por el joven por siervo de mi señor, y que el joven vaya con sus hermanos.

So now let me be my lord's servant here in place of the boy, and let him go back with his brothers.

34 Porque ¿cómo iré yo a mi padre sin el joven? No podré, por no ver el mal que sobrevendrá a mi padre.

For how may I go back to my father without the boy, and see the evil which will come on my father?
