Eclesiastés 4
1 Me volví y vi todas las violencias que se hacen debajo del sol; y he aquí las lágrimas de los oprimidos, y que no tienen consolador; y que la fuerza estaba en la mano de sus opresores, y para ellos no había consolador.
And I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors was power, and they had no comforter.
2 Y alabé yo a los finados que ya murieron, más que a los vivientes que hasta ahora están vivos.
Then I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive;
3 Y tuve por mejor que ellos ambos al que no ha sido aún, porque no ha visto las malas obras que se hacen debajo del sol.
and more fortunate than both is he who hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4 He visto asimismo que todo trabajo y toda rectitud de obras mueve la envidia del hombre contra su prójimo. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
And I saw all labour, and all success of work, that it is man's jealousy of his neighbour. This also is vanity and pursuit of the wind.
5 El loco dobla sus manos y come su misma carne.
The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6 Más vale un puño lleno con descanso, que ambos puños llenos con trabajo y aflicción de espíritu.
Better is a handful with quietness, than both hands full with labour and pursuit of the wind.
7 Yo me volví otra vez, y vi otra vanidad debajo del sol.
And I returned and saw vanity under the sun.
8 Es el hombre solo y sin sucesor; que ni tiene hijo ni hermano; mas nunca cesa de trabajar, ni aun sus ojos se sacian de sus riquezas, ni piensa: ¿Para quién trabajo yo, y defraudo mi alma del bien? También esto es vanidad, y duro trabajo.
There is one [alone] and without a second; also he hath neither son nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour, neither is his eye satisfied with riches, and [he saith not], For whom then am I labouring, and depriving my soul of good? This also is vanity and a grievous occupation.
9 Mejores son dos que uno; porque tienen mejor paga de su trabajo.
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 Porque si cayeren, el uno levantará a su compañero; mas ¡ay del solo! que cuando cayere, no habrá segundo que lo levante.
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and who hath not another to lift him up!
11 También si dos durmieren juntos, se calentarán; mas ¿cómo se calentará uno solo?
Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one alone be warm?
12 Y si alguno prevaleciere contra uno, dos estarán contra él; y cordón de tres dobleces no presto se rompe.
And if a [man] overpower the one, the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Mejor es el niño pobre y sabio, que el rey viejo y loco que no puede ser avisado.
Better is a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth no more how to be admonished.
14 Porque de la cárcel salió para reinar; aunque en su reino nació pobre.
For out of the prison-house he came forth to reign, although he was born poor in his kingdom.
15 Vi a todos los vivientes debajo del sol caminando con el niño, sucesor, que estará en lugar de aquél.
I saw all the living that walk under the sun, with the child, the second, that should stand up in his stead.
16 No tiene fin todo el pueblo que fue antes de ellos; tampoco los que vendrán después estarán con él contentos. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
[There is] no end of all the people, of all that stood before them; those however that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after the wind.
