Eclesiastés 2
1 Dije yo también en mi corazón: Ven ahora, te probaré con alegría, y gozarás de bienes. Mas he aquí esto también era vanidad.
I said in my heart, “Come, now, I will try thee with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure!” But, lo! this also was vanity.
2 A la risa dije: Enloqueces; y al placer: ¿De qué sirve esto?
I said of laughter, “It is mad;” and of mirth, “What availeth it?”
3 Propuse en mi corazón agasajar mi carne con vino, y que mi corazón anduviese en sabiduría, y retuviese la locura, hasta ver cuál fuese el bien de los hijos de los hombres, en el cual se ocuparan debajo del cielo todos los días de su vida.
I thought in my heart to strengthen my body with wine, and, while my heart cleaved to wisdom, to lay hold on folly, till I should see what was good for the sons of men, which they should do under heaven all the days of their life.
4 Engrandecí mis obras, edifiqué para mí casas, planté para mí viñas;
I made me great works. I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards.
5 me hice huertos y jardines, y planté en ellos árboles de todos frutos.
I made me gardens and parks, and planted in them fruit-trees of every kind.
6 Me hice estanques de aguas, para regar de ellos el bosque donde crecían los árboles.
I made me pools of water, with which to water the grove shooting up trees.
7 Poseí siervos y siervas, y tuve hijos de familia; también tuve posesión grande de vacas y ovejas, sobre todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén.
I got me men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than all who were in Jerusalem before me.
8 Me allegué también plata y oro, y tesoro preciado de reyes y de provincias; me hice de cantores y cantoras, y todos los deleites de los hijos de los hombres, instrumentos músicos y de todas suertes.
I heaped me up also silver and gold, and the wealth of kings and of provinces. I got me men-singers and women-singers, and the delight of the sons of men, a chosen woman and chosen women.
9 Y fui engrandecido, y aumentado más que todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén; a más de esto perseveró conmigo mi sabiduría.
So I became greater than all that were before me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also remained with me.
10 No negué a mis ojos ninguna cosa que desearan, ni aparté mi corazón de placer alguno, porque mi corazón gozó de todo mi trabajo; y esta fue mi parte de toda mi faena.
And whatever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy. For my heart rejoiced by means of all my labor, and this was my portion from all my labor.
11 Al fin miré yo todas las obras que habían hecho mis manos, y el trabajo que tomé para hacerlas; y he aquí, todo vanidad y aflicción de espíritu, y sin provecho debajo del sol.
Then I looked upon all the works which my hands had wrought, and upon all the labor which I had toiled in performing; and, behold, it was all vanity, and striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
12 Después volví yo a mirar para ver la sabiduría, y los desvaríos; y la locura (porque ¿qué hombre hay que pueda seguir al rey en lo que ya hicieron?).
Then I turned myself to behold wisdom and senselessness and folly. For what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
13 Y he visto que la sabiduría sobrepasa a la locura, como la luz a las tinieblas.
I saw, indeed, that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
14 El sabio tiene sus ojos en su cabeza, mas el loco anda en tinieblas. Y también entendí yo que un mismo suceso acaecerá al uno que al otro.
The wise man's eyes are in his head, but the fool walketh in darkness; yet I perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
15 Entonces dije yo en mi corazón: Como sucederá al loco me sucederá también a mí. ¿Para qué pues he trabajado hasta ahora por hacerme más sabio? Y dije en mi corazón, que también esto era vanidad.
Then I said in my heart, “As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth to me. Why, then, became I wiser than others?” Then I said in my heart, “This also is vanity.”
16 Porque ni del sabio ni del loco habrá memoria para siempre; pues en los días venideros ya todo será olvidado, y también morirá el sabio como el loco.
For there is no remembrance of the wise man more than of the fool for ever; for in the days to come shall all have long been forgotten; and, alas! the wise man dieth, as well as the fool.
17 Aborrecí por tanto la vida, porque toda obra que se hace debajo del sol me era fastidiosa; por cuanto todo era vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
Therefore I hated life, because what is done under the sun appeared evil to me. For all is vanity, and striving after wind.
18 Yo asimismo aborrecí todo mi trabajo que había puesto por obra debajo del sol; el cual dejaré a otro que vendrá después de mí.
Yea, I hated all my labor which I had performed under the sun, because I must leave it to the man that shall be after me.
19 ¿Y quién sabe si será sabio, o loco, el que se enseñoreará de todo mi trabajo en que me hice sabio debajo del sol? Esto también es vanidad.
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? Yet shall he be lord of all the labor with which I have wearied myself, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.
20 Volvió, por tanto, a desesperanzar mi corazón acerca de todo el trabajo en que me trabajé, y en que me hice sabio debajo del sol.
Therefore I turned to give up my heart to despair in regard to all the labor with which I had wearied myself under the sun.
21 ¡Que el hombre trabaje con sabiduría, y con ciencia, y con rectitud, y que haya de dar su hacienda a hombre que nunca trabajó en ello! También es esto vanidad y mal grande.
For there is a man whose labor has been with wisdom and knowledge and skill; yet to a man who hath not labored for it must he leave it as his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
22 Porque ¿qué tiene el hombre de todo su trabajo, y fatiga de su corazón, en que él trabajó debajo del sol?
For what hath man of all his labor, and the striving of his spirit, with which he wearieth himself under the sun?
23 Porque todos sus días no son sino dolores, y sus ocupaciones molestias; aun de noche su corazón no reposa. Esto también es vanidad.
For all his days are grief, and his occupation trouble; even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity.
24 No hay cosa mejor para el hombre sino que coma y beba, y que su alma vea el bien de su trabajo. También he visto que esto es de la mano de Dios.
There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink, and let his soul enjoy good in his labor. But this, as I have seen, cometh from the hand of God.
25 Porque ¿quién comerá, y quién se cuidará, mejor que yo?
For who can eat, or hasten thereunto more than I?
26 Porque al hombre que es bueno delante de Dios, él le da sabiduría y ciencia y alegría, mas al pecador le dio la ocupación de que allegue y amontone, para que dé al bueno delante de él. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
For to a man who is good in his sight God giveth wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he giveth the wearisome business of gathering and heaping up, to give it to him who is good before God. This also is vanity, and striving after wind.
