Proverbios 23
1 Cuando te asentares a comer con algún señor, considera bien lo que estuviere delante de ti:
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Consider well what is before thee;
2 Y pon cuchillo a tu garganta, si tienes grande apetito.
For thou wilt put a knife to thy throat, If thou art a man given to appetite!
3 No codicies sus manjares delicados; porque es pan engañoso.
Long not for his dainties. For they are deceitful meat.
4 No trabajes para ser rico: déjate de tu cuidado.
Toil not to become rich; Cease from this, thy wisdom.
5 ¿Has de poner tus ojos en las riquezas, siendo ningunas? porque hacerse han alas, como alas de águila; y volarán al cielo.
Wilt thou let thine eyes fly toward them? They are gone! For riches truly make to themselves wings; They fly away like the eagle toward heaven.
6 No comas pan de hombre de mal ojo; ni codicies sus manjares.
Eat not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, And long not for his dainties;
7 Porque cual es su pensamiento en su alma, tal es él. Decirte ha, come, y bebe: mas su corazón no está contigo.
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.
8 ¿Comiste tu parte? vomitarlo has; y perdiste tus suaves palabras.
The morsel, which thou hast eaten, thou shalt vomit up; And thou wilt have thrown away thy sweet words.
9 No hables en las orejas del insensato; porque menospreciará la prudencia de tus razones.
Speak not in the ears of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
10 No traspases el término antiguo, ni entres en la heredad de los huérfanos:
Remove not the ancient landmark, And enter not into the fields of the fatherless!
11 Porque el defensor de ellos es el Fuerte: el cual juzgará la causa de ellos contra ti.
For their avenger is mighty; He will maintain their cause against thee.
12 Aplica al castigo tu corazón; y tus orejas a las hablas de sabiduría.
Apply thy heart to instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 No detengas el castigo del muchacho; porque si le hirieres con vara, no morirá.
Withhold not correction from a child; If thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
Beat him thyself with the rod, And thou shalt rescue him from the underworld. (Sheol h7585)
15 Hijo mío, si sabio fuere tu corazón, también a mí se me alegrará el corazón.
My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart shall rejoice, even mine;
16 Mis entrañas también se alegrarán, cuando tus labios hablaren cosas rectas.
Yea, my reins shall exult, When thy lips speak right things.
17 No tenga envidia de los pecadores tu corazón: antes persevera en el temor de Jehová todo tiempo:
Let not thy heart envy sinners, But continue thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long;
18 Porque ciertamente hay fin; y tu esperanza no será cortada.
For surely there shall be a reward, And thine expectation shall not be cut off.
19 Oye tú, hijo mío, y sé sabio, y endereza al camino tu corazón.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise; And let thy heart go forward in the way!
20 No estés con los bebedores de vino, ni con los comedores de carne:
Be not thou among winebibbers, And riotous eaters of flesh;
21 Porque el bebedor y el comilón empobrecerán; y el sueño hará vestir vestidos rotos.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
22 Oye a tu padre, a aquel que te engendró; y cuando tu madre envejeciere, no la menosprecies.
Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Compra la verdad, y no la vendas: la sabiduría, el enseñamiento, y la inteligencia.
Buy the truth, and sell it not; Buy wisdom and instruction and understanding.
24 Alegrando se alegrará el padre del justo; y el que engendró sabio, se regocijará con él.
The father of a righteous man shall greatly rejoice; Yea, he who begetteth a wise child shall have joy in him.
25 Alégrese tu padre y tu madre, y regocíjese la que te engendró.
Let thy father and thy mother have joy; Yea, let her that bore thee rejoice!
26 Dáme, hijo mío, tu corazón, y miren tus ojos por mis caminos:
My son, give me thy heart, And let thine eyes observe my ways!
27 Porque sima profunda es la ramera, y pozo angosto la extraña.
For a harlot is a deep ditch; Yea, a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 También ella, como robador, asecha; y multiplica entre los hombres los prevaricadores.
Like a robber she lieth in wait, And increaseth the treacherous among men.
29 ¿Para quién será el ay? ¿para quién el ay? ¿para quién las rencillas? ¿para quién las quejas? ¿para quién las heridas de balde? ¿para quién los cardenales de los ojos?
Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who anxiety? Who wounds without cause? Who dimness of eyes?
30 Para los que se detienen junto al vino; para los que van buscando la mistura.
They that tarry long at the wine; They that go in to seek mixed wine.
31 No mires al vino como es bermejo, como resplandezca su color en el vaso, como se entra suavemente.
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly.
32 A su fin morderá como serpiente; y como basilisco dará dolor.
At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.
33 Tus ojos mirarán las extrañas; y tu corazón hablará perversidades.
Thine eyes will look upon strange women, And thy heart will utter perverse things.
34 Y serás como el que yace en medio de la mar; y como el que yace en cabo del mastelero.
Yea, thou shalt be as one that lieth down in the midst of the sea, And as one that lieth down upon the top of a mast.
35 Y dirás hiriéronme, mas no me dolió: azotáronme, mas no lo sentí: cuando despertaré, aun lo tornaré a buscar.
They have stricken me [[shalt thou say]], —I suffered no pain! They have beaten me, —I felt it not! When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
