Proverbios 17
1 Mejor es un bocado de pan seco, y en paz, que la casa de cuestión llena de víctimas.
Better is a dry morsel, and quietness with it, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
2 El siervo prudente se enseñoreará del hijo deshonrador; y entre los hermanos partirá la herencia.
A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3 Afinador a la plata, y fragua al oro: mas Jehová prueba los corazones.
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
4 El malo está atento al labio inicuo; y el mentiroso escucha a la lengua maldiciente.
A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
5 El que escarnece al pobre, afrenta a su hacedor; y el que se alegra en la calamidad ajena no será sin castigo.
He that mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6 Corona de los viejos son los hijos de los hijos; y la honra de los hijos, sus padres.
Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children is their fathers.
7 No conviene al insensato el labio excelente: ¿cuánto menos al príncipe el labio mentiroso?
Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 Piedra preciosa es el presente en ojos de sus dueños: a donde quiera que se vuelve, da prosperidad.
A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: wherever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 El que cubre la prevaricación, busca amistad: mas el que reitera la palabra, aparta al príncipe.
He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
10 Aprovecha la reprensión en el entendido, más que cien azotes en el insensato.
A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 El rebelde no busca sino mal; y mensajero cruel será enviado contra él.
An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Encuentre con el hombre un oso, que le hayan quitado sus cachorros, y no un insensato en su locura.
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 El que da mal por bien, no se apartará mal de su casa.
Whoever rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 Soltar las aguas es el principio de la contienda: pues antes que se revuelva el pleito, déjalo.
The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore withdraw from contention, before it be meddled with.
15 El que justifica al impío, y el que condena al justo, ambos a dos son abominación a Jehová.
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
16 ¿De qué sirve el precio en la mano del insensato para comprar sabiduría, no teniendo entendimiento?
Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
17 En todo tiempo ama el amigo: mas el hermano para la angustia es nacido.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 El hombre falto de entendimiento toca la mano, fiando a otro delante de su amigo.
A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 La prevaricación ama, el que ama pleito; y el que alza su portada, busca quebrantamiento.
He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 El perverso de corazón nunca hallará bien; y el que revuelve con su lengua, caerá en mal.
He that hath a perverse heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 El que engendra al insensato, para su tristeza le engendra; y el padre del insensato no se alegrará.
He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 El corazón alegre hará buena disposición: mas el espíritu triste seca los huesos.
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 El impío toma presentes del seno, para pervertir las veredas del derecho.
A wicked man taketh a bribe out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24 En el rostro del entendido se parece la sabiduría: mas los ojos del insensato, hasta el cabo de la tierra.
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 El hijo insensato es enojo a su padre; y amargura a la que le engendró.
A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
26 Ciertamente condenar al justo, no es bueno: ni herir a los príncipes sobre el derecho.
Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
27 Detiene sus dichos el que sabe sabiduría; y de preciado espíritu es el hombre entendido.
He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 Aun el insensato cuando calla, es contado por sabio: el que cierra sus labios es entendido.
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
