Números 14
1 Entonces toda la congregación alzaron grita, y dieron voces; y lloró el pueblo aquella noche.
That night all the community wept loudly.
2 Y quejáronse contra Moisés, y contra Aarón, todos los hijos de Israel, y dijéronles toda la multitud: Ojalá hubiéramos muerto en la tierra de Egipto: o en este desierto, ojalá muriéramos.
All the people of Israel criticized Moses and Aaron. The whole community said to them, “We wish we had died in the land of Egypt, or here in this wilderness!
3 Y ¿por qué nos trae Jehová a esta tierra para caer a cuchillo, y que nuestras mujeres y nuestros chiquitos sean por presa? ¿No nos sería mejor volvernos a Egipto?
Why did Yahweh bring us to this land to die by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become victims. Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?”
4 Y decían el uno al otro: Hagamos un capitán, y volvámosnos a Egipto.
They said to each another, “Let us choose another leader, and let us return to Egypt.”
5 Entonces Moisés y Aarón cayeron sobre sus rostros delante de toda la compañía de la congregación de los hijos de Israel.
Then Moses and Aaron lay facedown before all the assembly of the community of the people of Israel.
6 Y Josué hijo de Nun, y Caleb hijo de Jefone, de los que habían reconocido la tierra, rompieron sus vestidos.
Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were some of those sent to examine the land, tore their clothes.
7 Y hablaron a toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, diciendo: La tierra por donde pasamos para reconocerla es tierra en grande manera buena:
They spoke to all the community of the people of Israel. They said, “The land that we passed through and examined is a very good land.
8 Si Jehová se agradare de nosotros, él nos meterá en esta tierra, y nos la entregará, tierra que corre leche y miel.
If Yahweh is pleased with us, then he will take us into this land and give it to us. The land flows with milk and honey.
9 Por tanto no seáis rebeldes contra Jehová, ni temáis al pueblo de aquesta tierra, porque nuestro pan son. Su amparo se ha apartado de ellos, y con nosotros es Jehová, no los temáis.
But do not rebel against Yahweh, and do not fear the people in the land, for they are bread to us. Their protection will be removed from them, because Yahweh is with us. Do not fear them.”
10 Entonces toda la multitud habló de apedrearlos con piedras, y la gloria de Jehová se mostró en el tabernáculo del testimonio a todos los hijos de Israel.
Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of Yahweh appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.
11 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: ¿Hasta cuándo me ha de irritar este pueblo? ¿Hasta cuándo no me ha de creer con todas las señales que he hecho en medio de ellos?
Yahweh said to Moses, “How long must this people despise me? How long must they fail to trust me, despite all the signs of my power that I have done among them?
12 Yo lo heriré de mortandad, y lo destruiré, y a ti te pondré sobre gente grande y fuerte más que él.
I will attack them with plague, disinherit them, and make from your own clan a nation that will be greater and mightier than they are.”
13 Y Moisés respondió a Jehová: Y oírlo han los Egipcios, porque de en medio de él sacaste a este pueblo con tu fortaleza.
Moses said to Yahweh, “If you do this, then the Egyptians will hear about it, because you rescued this people from them by your power.
14 Y dirán los Egipcios a los habitadores de esta tierra, los cuales han ya oído que tú, oh Jehová, estabas en medio de este pueblo, que ojo a ojo aparecías tú, oh Jehová, y que tu nube estaba sobre ellos y que de día ibas delante de ellos en columna de nube, y de noche en columna de fuego;
They will tell it to this land's inhabitants. They have heard that you, Yahweh, are present with this people, because you are seen face to face. Your cloud stands over our people. You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Y que has hecho morir a este pueblo como a un hombre: y dirán las gentes, que oyeren tu fama, diciendo:
Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations that have heard of your fame will speak and say,
16 Porque no pudo Jehová meter este pueblo en la tierra de la cual les había jurado, los mató en el desierto.
'Because Yahweh could not take this people into the land that he swore to give them, he has killed them in the wilderness.'
17 Ahora, pues, yo te ruego que sea magnificada la fortaleza del Señor, como lo hablaste, diciendo:
Now, I beg you, use your great power. For you have said,
18 Jehová, luengo de iras, y grande en misericordia, que suelta la iniquidad y la rebelión: y absolviendo no absolverá. Que visita la maldad de los padres sobre los hijos hasta los terceros y hasta los cuartos.
'Yahweh is slow to anger and abundant in covenant faithfulness. He forgives iniquity and transgression. He will by no means clear the guilty when he brings the punishment of the ancestors' sin on their descendants, to the third and fourth generation.'
19 Perdona ahora la iniquidad de este pueblo según la grandeza de tu misericordia, y como has perdonado a este pueblo desde Egipto hasta aquí.
Pardon, I plead with you, this people's sin because of the greatness of your covenant faithfulness, just as you have always forgiven this people from the time they were in Egypt until now.”
20 Entonces Jehová dijo: Yo lo he perdonado conforme a tu dicho.
Yahweh said, “I have pardoned them in keeping with your request,
21 Mas ciertamente vivo yo, y mi gloria hinche toda la tierra,
but truly, as I live, and as all the earth will be filled with my glory,
22 Que todos los que vieron mi gloria, y mis señales que he hecho en Egipto y en el desierto, y me han tentado ya diez veces, y no han oído mi voz,
all those people who saw my glory and the signs of power that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness—they have still tempted me these ten times and have not listened to my voice.
23 No verán la tierra de la cual juré a sus padres; y que ninguno de los que me han irritado, la verá.
So I say that they will certainly not see the land about which I made an oath to their ancestors. Not one of them who despised me will see it,
24 Mas mi siervo Caleb, por cuanto hubo otro espíritu en él, y cumplió de ir en pos de mí, yo le meteré en la tierra donde entró, y su simiente la recibirá en heredad:
except for my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit. He has followed me fully; I will bring him into the land which he went to examine. His descendants will possess it.
25 Y aun al Amalecita, y al Cananeo que habitan en el valle. Volvéos mañana, y partíos al desierto camino del mar Bermejo.
(Now the Amalekites and Canaanites lived in the valley.) Tomorrow turn and go to the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds.”
26 Ítem, Jehová habló a Moisés, y a Aarón, diciendo:
Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron. He said,
27 ¿Hasta cuándo oiré a esta mala congregación que murmura contra mí, las quejas de los hijos de Israel, que se quejan de mí?
“How long must I tolerate this evil community that criticizes me? I have heard the complaining of the people of Israel against me.
28 Díles: Vivo yo, dice Jehová, que como vosotros hablasteis a mis oídos, así haré yo con vosotros.
Say to them, 'As I live,' says Yahweh, 'as you have spoken in my hearing, I will do this to you:
29 En este desierto caerán vuestros cuerpos, y todos vuestros contados por toda vuestra cuenta de veinte años arriba, los que murmurasteis contra mí,
Your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness, all you who complained against me, you who were counted in the census, the whole number of the people from twenty years old and upward.
30 Que vosotros no entraréis en la tierra por la cual alcé mi mano de haceros habitar en ella, sacando a Caleb hijo de Jefone, y a Josué hijo de Nun.
You will certainly not go into the land that I promised to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
31 Y vuestros chiquitos, de los cuales dijisteis: Por presa serán, yo los meteré, y ellos sabrán la tierra que vosotros despreciasteis.
But your little ones who you said would be victims, I will take them into the land. They will experience the land that you have rejected!
32 Y vuestros cuerpos, vosotros, en este desierto caerán.
As for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness.
33 Mas vuestros hijos serán pastores en este desierto cuarenta años, y ellos llevarán vuestras fornicaciones, hasta que vuestros cuerpos sean consumidos en el desierto:
Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years. They must bear the consequences of your acts of rebellion until the end of your corpses in the wilderness.
34 Conforme al número de los días en que reconocisteis la tierra, cuarenta días, día por año, día por año, llevaréis vuestras iniquidades cuarenta años, y conoceréis mi castigo.
Just as the number of the days during which you examined the land—forty days, you must likewise bear the consequences of your sins for forty years—one year for every day, and you must know what it is like for me to oppose you.
35 Yo Jehová he hablado: Si esto no hiciere a toda esta congregación mala, que se ha juntado contra mí: en este desierto serán consumidos, y ahí morirán.
I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will certainly do this to all this evil community that is gathered together against me. They will be completely cut off, and here they will die.'”
36 Y los varones que Moisés envió a reconocer la tierra, y vueltos habían hecho murmurar contra él a toda la congregación infamando la tierra:
So the men Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made the entire community grumble against Moses by spreading a bad report about the land—
37 Aquellos varones, que habían infamado la tierra, murieron de plaga delante de Jehová:
these men who had brought out a bad report about the land were struck down, and they died of a plague before Yahweh.
38 Mas Josué hijo de Nun, y Caleb hijo de Jefone, vivieron, de aquellos hombres que habían ido a reconocer la tierra.
Of those men who had gone to spy out the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive.
39 Y Moisés dijo estas cosas, a todos los hijos de Israel, y el pueblo se enlutó mucho.
When Moses reported these words to all the people of Israel, they mourned very deeply.
40 Y levantáronse por la mañana, y subieron a la cumbre del monte, diciendo: Hénos aquí aparejados para subir al lugar del cual ha hablado Jehová, por cuanto hemos pecado.
They rose up early in the morning and went to the top of the mountain and said, “Look, we are here, and we will go to the place that Yahweh has promised, for we have sinned.”
41 Y dijo Moisés: ¿Por qué quebrantáis el dicho de Jehová? Esto tampoco os sucederá bien.
But Moses said, “Why are you now violating Yahweh's command? You will not succeed.
42 No subáis, porque Jehová no está en medio de vosotros, no seáis heridos delante de vuestros enemigos.
Do not go, because Yahweh is not with you to prevent you from being defeated by your enemies.
43 Porque el Amalecita, y el Cananeo están allí delante de vosotros, y caeréis a cuchillo; porque por cuanto os habéis tornado de seguir a Jehová, y Jehová no será con vosotros.
The Amalekites and Canaanites are there, and you will die by the sword because you turned back from following Yahweh. So he will not be with you.”
44 Y forzáronse a subir en la cumbre del monte, mas el arca del concierto de Jehová, y Moisés no se quitaron de en medio del campo.
But they presumed to go up into the hill country; however, neither Moses nor the ark of the covenant of Yahweh left the camp.
45 Y descendió el Amalecita, y el Cananeo que habitaban en el monte, e hiriéronlos, y deshiciéronlos, hasta Jorma.
Then the Amalekites came down, and also the Canaanites who lived on those hills. They attacked the Israelites and defeated them all the way to Hormah.
