1 Y fuése Abi-melec, hijo de Jerubaal, a Siquem a los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:
And Abimelech the son of Yerubba'al went to Shechem unto his mother's brothers, and spoke unto them, and unto all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,
2 Yo os ruego que habléis a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem: ¿Qué tenéis por mejor, que os señoreen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerubaal, o que os señoree un varón? Acordáos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra.
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, What is better for you, either that there should rule over you seventy men, all the sons of Yerubba'al, or that there reign over you one man? and remember that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem todas estas palabras: y el corazón de ellos se inclinó tras Abi-melec, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es.
And his mother's brothers spoke concerning him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words; and their heart became inclined after Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
4 Y diéronle setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con los cuales Abi-melec alquiló varones ociosos y vagabundos que le siguieron.
And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Ba'al-berith; and Abimelech hired therewith idle and heedless persons, who followed him.
5 Y viniendo a la casa de su padre a Efra, mató a sus hermanos los hijos de Jerubaal, setenta varones, sobre una piedra: mas quedó Joatam el más pequeño hijo de Jerubaal, que se escondió.
And he came unto his father's house at 'Ophrah, and slew his brothers the sons of Yeruhba'al, seventy persons, upon one stone; and there was yet left Yotham the youngest son of Yerubba'al; for he had hidden himself.
6 Y juntados todos los señores de Siquem, con toda la casa de Mello, fueron y eligieron a Abi-melec por rey cerca de la llanura de la estatua que estaba en Siquem.
And all the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled together, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was by Shechem.
7 Lo cual como fue dicho a Joatam, fue, y púsose en la cumbre del monte de Garizim, y alzando su voz clamó, y díjoles: Oídme varones de Siquem, que Dios os oiga:
And they told it to Yotham; and he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizzim, and he lifted up his voice, and cried; and he said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, so that God may hearken unto you.
8 Fueron los árboles a elegir rey sobre sí; y dijeron a la oliva: Reina sobre nosotros.
The trees went once forth to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.
9 Mas la oliva les respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi grosura con la cual por mi causa Dios y los hombres son honrados, por ir, y ser grande sobre los árboles?
But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I give up my fatness, wherewith through me they honor God and men, and shall I go to be promoted over the trees!
10 Y dijeron los árboles a la higuera: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.
And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, reign over us.
11 Y respondióles la higuera: ¿Tengo de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, por ir, y ser grande sobre los árboles?
But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I give up my sweetness, and my good productiveness, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12 Dijeron pues los árboles a la vid: Anda pues tú, reina sobre nosotros.
Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, reign over us.
13 Y la vid les respondió: ¿Tengo de dejar mi mosto, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, por ir y ser grande sobre los árboles?
But the vine said unto them, Should I give up my fresh wine, which rejoiceth God and men, and go to be promoted over the trees!
14 Dijeron pues todos los árboles al escaramujo: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.
Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, reign over us.
15 Y el escaramujo respondió a los árboles: Si con verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, veníd, y aseguráos debajo de mi sombra, y si no, fuego salga del escaramujo que trague los cedros del Líbano.
And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me as king over you, then come seek protection in my shadow; and if not, then let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of the Lebanon.
16 Ahora pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey a Abi-melec; y si lo habéis hecho bien con Jerubaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme a la obra de sus manos:
And now, if ye have acted in truth and sincerity, when ye made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Yerubba'al and his house, and have done unto him according to the merit of his hands;
17 (Pues que mi padre peleó por vosotros, y echó su alma lejos por libraros de mano de Madián,
(In that my father fought for you, and cast his life far away, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;
18 Y vosotros os levantasteis hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y matasteis a sus hijos, setenta varones, sobre una piedra: y habéis puesto sobre los señores de Siquem por rey a Abi-melec hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano: )
While ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy men, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother; )
19 Si con verdad y con integridad habéis hecho hoy con Jerubaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abi-melec: y él goce de vosotros:
If ye have thus acted in truth and sincerity with Yerubba'al and with his house this day: then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.
20 Y si no, fuego salga de Abi-melec que consuma a los señores de Siquem, y la casa de Mello: y fuego salga de los señores de Siquem y de la casa de Mello que consuma a Abi-melec.
But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from Beth-millo, and devour Abimelech.
21 Y huyó Joatán, huyó, y fuése a Beer, y allí se estuvo por causa de Abi-melec su hermano.
And Yotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 Y después que Abi-melec hubo dominado sobre Israel tres años,
And Abimelech ruled over Israel three years;
23 Envió Dios un espíritu malo entre Abi-melec, y entre los señores de Siquem, que los de Siquem se levantaron contra Abi-melec,
And then did God send an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem became unfaithful toward Abimelech;
24 Para que el agravio de los setenta hijos de Jerubaal viniese: y para que las sangres de ellos fuesen puestas sobre Abi-melec su hermano, que los mató: y sobre los señores de Siquem, que corroboraron las manos de él para matar sus hermanos.
So that the violence [done] to the seventy sons of Yerubba'al might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who had slain them; and upon the men of Shechem, who had strengthened his hands to slay his brothers.
25 Y los señores de Siquem le pusieron asechadores en las cumbres de los montes, que salteaban a todos los que pasaban cerca de ellos por el camino: de lo cual fue dado aviso a Abi-melec.
And the men of Shechem set persons to lie in wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that passed by them on that way: and it was told unto Abimelech.
26 Y vino Gaal hijo de Obed con sus hermanos, y pasáronse a Siquem: y los señores de Siquem se aseguraron con él:
And there came Ga'al the son of 'Ebed with his brothers, and passed through Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
27 Y saliendo al campo vendimiaron sus viñas, y lagarearon, e hicieron alegrías: y entrando en el templo de sus dioses comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abi-melec.
And they went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod [the grapes], and made joyful feasts, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
28 Y Gaal hijo de Obed dijo: ¿Quién es Abi-melec, y quién es Siquem para que nosotros sirvamos a él? ¿No es hijo de Jerubaal? ¿Y Zebul no es su asistente? Servíd a los varones de Jemor padre de Siquem. ¿Por qué le habíamos de servir a él?
And Ga'al the son of 'Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Yerubba'al? and Zebul his superintendent? serve the men of Chamor the father of Shechem; for why indeed should we serve him?
29 ¡Quién diese a este pueblo debajo de mi mano, que luego echaría a Abi-melec! Y decía a Abi-melec: Aumenta tus escuadrones, y sal.
And O that some one would put this people into my power! and I would remove Abimelech. And he let it be said to Abimelech, Increase thy army, and come out.
30 Y Zebul asistente de la ciudad, oyendo las palabras de Gaal hijo de Obed, encendióse su ira.
And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Ga'al the son of 'Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31 Y envió astutamente mensajeros a Abi-melec, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal hijo de Obed, y sus hermanos, han venido a Siquem, y he aquí que han cercado la ciudad contra ti.
And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privately, saying, Behold, Ga'al the son of 'Ebed and his brothers are come to Shechem; and, behold, they incite the city to enmity against thee.
32 Levántate pues ahora de noche tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscada en el campo.
And now rise up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
33 Y por la mañana al salir del sol levantarte has, y acometerás la ciudad; y él y el pueblo que está con él saldrán contra ti: y tú harás con él según que se te ofrecerá.
And it shall be, in the morning, the moment the sun shineth, that thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to him as thy means may let thee.
34 Levantándose pues de noche Abi-melec, y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías.
And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 Y Gaal hijo de Obed salió, y púsose a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad: y Abi-melec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, se levantaron de la emboscada.
And Ga'al the son of 'Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the city-gate: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from the ambush.
36 Y viendo Gaal el pueblo, dijo a Zebul: He allí pueblo que desciende de las cumbres de los montes. Y Zebul le respondió: La sombra de los montes, te parece hombres.
And when Ga'al saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou regardest the shadow of the mountains as men.
37 Mas Gaal tornó a hablar, y dijo: He allí pueblo que desciende por medio de la tierra: y un escuadrón viene por el camino de la campaña de Meonenim.
And Ga'al spoke again and said, See people are coming down from the highest point of the land, and one company is coming along by the way of the grove of Me'onenim.
38 Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está ahora tu dicho que decías: Quién es Abi-melec, para que sirvamos a él? ¿Este no es el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues ahora, y pelea con él.
Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him! is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.
39 Y Gaal salió delante de los señores de Siquem y peleó contra Abi-melec.
And Ga'al went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 Y Abi-melec le siguió, y él huyó delante de él, y cayeron heridos muchos hasta la entrada de la puerta.
And Abimelech pursued him, and he fled before him, and many fell slain, even as far as the entrance of the gate.
41 Y Abi-melec se quedó en Aruma, y Zebul echó a Gaal y a sus hermanos, que no morasen en Siquem.
And Abimelech remained at Arumah: and Zebul banished Ga'al and his brothers, that they should not remain in Shechem.
42 Y aconteció el día siguiente que el pueblo salió al campo: y fue dado aviso a Abi-melec.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and it was told to Abimelech.
43 El cual tomando gente repartióla en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo: y como miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad: y levantándose contra ellos hiriólos.
And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field; and as he saw, and, behold, that the people were coming forth out of the city, he rose up against them, and smote them.
44 Y Abi-melec y el escuadrón que estaba con él, acometieron con ímpetu, y pararon a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad: y las otras dos compañías acometieron a todos los que estaban en el campo, e hiriéronlos.
And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, spread forward, and took position in the entrance of the city-gate: and the two other companies spread over all that were in the fields, and smote them.
45 Abi-melec combatió la ciudad todo aquel día y tomóla, y mató al pueblo que en ella estaba, y asoló la ciudad, y sembróla de sal.
And Ahimelech fought against the city all that day; and he captured the city, and the people that were therein he slew; and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
46 Lo cual como oyeron todos los que estaban en la torre de Siquem, entráronse en la fortaleza del templo del dios Berit.
And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard this, they entered into the stronghold of the house of the god Berith.
47 Y fue dicho a Abi-melec como todos los de la torre de Siquem estaban juntados.
And it was told unto Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 Abi-melec subió al monte de Salmón, él y toda la gente que estaba con él, y tomó Abi-melec hachas en su mano, y cortó rama de los árboles, y levantándola púsosela sobre sus hombros, diciendo al pueblo que estaba con él: Lo que me veis a mí que hago, hacéd vosotros prestamente como yo.
And Abimelech went thereupon up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from a tree, and bore it, and laid it on his shoulder; and he said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen that I have done, make haste, and do like me.
49 Y así todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron a Abi-melec, y pusiéronla junto a la fortaleza, y pusieron fuego con ella a la fortaleza, de tal manera que todos los de la torre de Siquem murieron, como mil hombres y mujeres.
And all the people also cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put the same to the stronghold, and set the stronghold over them on fire: and thus died also all the people of the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
50 Después Abi-melec se fue a Tebes: y puso cerco a Tebes, y tomóla.
And Abimelech went then to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and captured it.
51 En medio de aquella ciudad estaba una torre fuerte a la cual se retiraron todos los hombres y mujeres, y todos los señores de la ciudad: y cerrando tras sí las puertas subiéronse a la techumbre de la torre.
But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and the women, and all the chief persons of the city, and shut the doors behind them, and went up to the roof of the tower.
52 Y vino Abi-melec a la torre, y combatiéndola llegóse a la puerta de la torre para pegarle fuego.
And Abimelech came up to the tower, and fought against it, and approached as far as the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 Y una mujer dejó caer un pedazo de una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abi-melec, y quebróle los cascos.
But a certain woman cast a piece of an upper millstone upon Abimelech's head, and crushed his skull.
54 Y luego él llamó a su escudero, y díjole: Saca tu espada y mátame: porque no se diga de mí, una mujer le mató. Y su escudero le atravesó, y murió.
Then called he hastily unto the young man that bore his armor, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that people may not say of me, A woman hath slain him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 Y como los Israelitas vieron muerto a Abi-melec, fuéronse cada uno a su casa.
And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his place.
56 Así pues pagó Dios a Abi-melec el mal que hizo contra su padre, matando a sus setenta hermanos.
Thus did God compensate the evil of Abimelech, which he had done unto his father, in slaying his seventy brothers:
57 Y aun todo el mal de los señores de Siquem tornó Dios sobre sus cabezas: y la maldición de Joatam hijo de Jerubaal vino sobre ellos.
And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God bring back upon their own head; and there came upon them the curse of Yotham the son of Yerubba'al.
