Ester 9
1 Y en el mes doceno, que es el mes de Adar, a los trece del mismo, donde llegó el mandamiento del rey, y su ley para que se hiciese, el mismo día en que esperaban los enemigos de los Judíos enseñorearse de ellos, fue lo contrario; porque los Judíos se enseñorearon de los que los aborrecían.
On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the king's order and decree were to be carried out. That day the enemies of the Jews had thought they would crush them, but the exact opposite happened—the Jews crushed their enemies.
2 Los Judíos se juntaron en sus ciudades en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, para meter mano sobre los que habían procurado su mal: y nadie se puso delante de ellos, porque el temor de ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos.
The Jews gathered in their cities throughout the provinces of King Xerxes to attack those who wanted to destroy them. Nobody could oppose them, because all the other people were afraid of them.
3 Y todos los príncipes de las provincias, y los virreyes, y capitanes, y oficiales del rey, ensalzaban a los Judíos; porque el temor de Mardoqueo había caído sobre ellos.
All the officials of the provinces, the chief officers, the governors, and the king's officials helped the Jews, because they were afraid of Mordecai.
4 Porque Mardoqueo era grande en la casa del rey, y su fama iba por todas las provincias: porque el varón Mardoqueo iba engrandeciéndose.
Mordecai had a great deal of power in the royal palace, and his reputation spread throughout the provinces as his power increased.
5 E hirieron los Judíos a todos sus enemigos de plaga de espada, y de mortandad, y de perdición: e hicieron en sus enemigos a su voluntad.
The Jews attacked their enemies with swords, killing and destroying them, and they did whatever they wanted to their enemies.
6 Y en Susán la cabecera del reino mataron los Judíos, y destruyeron quinientos hombres.
In the fortress of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.
7 Y a Parsandata, y a Delfón, y a Esfata,
This included Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,
8 Y a Porata, y a Adalia, y a Adriata,
Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,
9 Y a Permesta, y a Arisai, y a Aridai, y a Vaiezata,
Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha,
10 Diez hijos de Amán, hijo de Amadati, enemigo de los Judíos, mataron: mas en la presa no metieron mano.
the ten sons of Haman, son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, but they did not take their possessions.
11 El mismo día vino la copia de los muertos en Susán la cabecera del reino, delante del rey.
The same day, when the number of those killed in the fortress of Susa was reported to the king,
12 Y dijo el rey a la reina Ester: En Susán la cabecera del reino han muerto los Judíos y destruido quinientos hombres, y diez hijos de Amán: ¿En las otras provincias del rey qué habrán hecho? ¿Qué pues es tu petición, y dársete ha? ¿y qué es más tu demanda, y hacerse ha?
he said to Queen Esther, “The Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men in the fortress of Susa, including Haman's ten sons. Imagine what they've done in the rest of the royal provinces! Now what is it you'd like to ask? It will be given to you. What more do you want? It will be granted.”
13 Y respondió Ester: Si place al rey, concédase también mañana a los Judíos en Susán, que hagan conforme a la ley de hoy; y que cuelguen en la horca a los diez hijos de Amán.
“If it please Your Majesty,” Esther replied, “allow the Jews in Susa be allowed to do the same tomorrow as they did today, following the decree. Also, let the ten sons of Haman be impaled on poles.”
14 Y mandó el rey que se hiciese así: y fue dada ley en Susán: y colgaron a los diez hijos de Amán.
The king ordered this to be done. A decree was issued in Susa, and they impaled the bodies of Haman's ten sons.
15 Y juntáronse los Judíos que estaban en Susán también a los catorce del mes de Adar, y mataron en Susán a trescientos hombres; mas en la presa no metieron su mano.
On the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, the Jews in Susa gathered together again and killed three hundred men there, but again they did not take their possessions.
16 Y los otros Judíos que estaban en las provincias del rey se juntaron también, y se pusieron en defensa de su vida, y tuvieron reposo de sus enemigos, y mataron de sus enemigos setenta y cinco mil; mas en la presa no metieron su mano.
The other Jews in the king's provinces also gathered to defend themselves and get rid of their enemies. They killed 75,000 who hated them, but did not touch their possessions.
17 A los trece días del mes de Adar; y reposaron a los catorce días del mismo, e hicieron aquel día día de banquete y de alegría.
This happened on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and celebration.
18 Mas los Judíos que estaban en Susán se juntaron a los trece del mismo, y a los catorce del mismo; y a los quince del mismo reposaron, e hicieron aquel día día de banquete y de alegría.
However, the Jews in Susa had gathered to fight on the thirteenth and the fourteenth days of the month. So they rested on the fifteenth day, and made that a day of feasting and celebration.
19 Por tanto los Judíos aldeanos que habitan en las villas sin muro hacen a los catorce del mes de Adar el día de alegría y de banquete, y buen día, y de enviar partes cada uno a su vecino.
To this day rural Jews, living in the villages, observe the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day of celebration and feasting, a holiday when they send gifts to one another.
20 Y escribió Mardoqueo estas cosas, y envió cartas a todos los Judíos que estaban en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, cercanos y de lejos,
Mordecai recorded these events and sent letters to all the Jews throughout the provinces ruled by King Xerxes, near and far,
21 Constituyéndoles que hiciesen el día catorceno del mes de Adar, y el quinceno del mismo cada un año,
requiring them to celebrate every year the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar
22 Por aquellos días en que los Judíos tuvieron reposo de sus enemigos: y aquel mes que les fue tornado de tristeza en alegría, y de luto en día bueno; que los hiciesen días de banquete y de gozo, y de enviar partes cada uno a su vecino, y dádivas a los pobres.
as the time when the Jews rested from their victory over their enemies, and as the month when their sadness was turned into joy and their mourning into a time of celebration. He wrote them to observe the days as days of feasting and joy and giving gifts of food to one another and presents to the poor.
23 Y los Judíos aceptaron, y comenzaron a hacer lo que Mardoqueo les escribió.
The Jews agreed to continue what they had already started doing, following what Mordecai had written to them.
24 Porque Amán, hijo de Amaatí Agageo, enemigo de todos los Judíos, pensó contra los Judíos para destruirlos, y echó Pur, que quiere decir, suerte, para consumirlos, y echarlos a perder.
For Haman, son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted to destroy the Jews, and had cast “pur” (meaning a “lot”) to crush and destroy them.
25 Y como ella entró delante del rey, él dijo con carta: El mal pensamiento que pensó contra los Judíos sea vuelto sobre su cabeza; y cuélguenle a él, y a sus hijos, en la horca.
But when it came to the king's attention, he sent out letters ordering that the evil scheme which Haman had planned against the Jews should rebound on him, and that he and his sons should be impaled on poles.
26 Por esto llamaron a estos días Purim, del nombre Pur: por tanto por todas las palabras de esta carta, y por lo que ellos vieron sobre esto, y lo que llegó a su noticia,
(That's why these days are called Purim, from the word Pur.) As a result of all the instructions in Mordecai's letter, and what they'd seen, and what had happened to them,
27 Establecieron y aceptaron los Judíos sobre sí, y sobre su simiente, y sobre todos los allegados a ellos, y no será traspasado, de hacer estos dos días según la escritura de ellos, y conforme a su tiempo cada un año.
the Jews committed themselves to adopt the practice that they and their descendants and all who join them should not forget to celebrate these two days as set down, and at the right time every year.
28 Y que estos días serían en memoria, y celebrados en todas las naciones, y familias, y provincias, y ciudades: estos días Purim no pasarán de entre los Judíos, y la memoria de ellos no cesará de su simiente.
These days were to be remembered and celebrated by every generation, family, province, and city, so that these days of Purim would always be observed among the Jews, and they would not be forgotten by their descendants.
29 Y la reina Ester, hija de Abihail, y Mardoqueo Judío, escribieron con toda fuerza para confirmar esta segunda carta del Purim.
Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, wrote a letter, along with Mordecai the Jew, giving in her letter full authority to Mordecai's letter about Purim.
30 Y envió cartas a todos los Judíos, a las ciento y veinte y siete provincias del rey Asuero, con palabras de paz y de verdad,
Letters expressing peace and reassurance were also sent all the Jews in the 127 provinces of the empire of King Xerxes.
31 Para confirmar estos días del Purim en sus tiempos, como les había constituido Mardoqueo Judío, y la reina Ester, y como habían aceptado sobre sí, y sobre su simiente, las palabras de los ayunos y de su clamor.
They established these days of Purim at their given time as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had ordered, committing themselves and their descendants to the times of fasting and mourning.
32 Y el mandamiento de Ester confirmó estas palabras del Purim, y fue escrito en el libro.
In this way Esther's decree confirmed these practices regarding Purim, which were entered in the official record.
