Proverbios 22
1 Más vale el buen nombre que las muchas riquezas, Y el ser apreciado más que la plata y el oro.
A name is chosen rather than much wealth, Than silver and than gold — good grace.
2 El rico y el pobre tienen esto en común: Yavé los hizo a todos ellos.
Rich and poor have met together, The Maker of them all [is] Jehovah.
3 El prudente ve el mal y se aparta, Pero los ingenuos siguen y reciben el daño.
The prudent hath seen the evil, and is hidden, And the simple have passed on, and are punished.
4 En las huellas de la humildad y del temor a Yavé, Andan riqueza, honor y vida.
The end of humility [is] the fear of Jehovah, Riches, and honour, and life.
5 Espinos y lazos hay en el camino de los perversos, El que guarda su alma se aparta de ellos.
Thorns — snares [are] in the way of the perverse, Whoso is keeping his soul is far from them.
6 Instruye al niño en el camino que debe seguir, Aun cuando sea viejo no se apartará de él.
Give instruction to a youth about his way, Even when he is old he turneth not from it.
7 El rico domina al pobre, Y el que pide prestado es esclavo del prestamista.
The rich over the poor ruleth, And a servant [is] the borrower to the lender.
8 El que siembra maldad cosecha desgracia, Y la vara de su arrogancia se consumirá.
Whoso is sowing perverseness reapeth sorrow, And the rod of his anger weareth out.
9 El que tiene ojo generoso será bendecido, Porque repartió su pan con el pobre.
The good of eye — he is blessed, For he hath given of his bread to the poor.
10 Echa fuera al escarnecedor, y se irá la discordia, Y también saldrán la contienda y las afrentas.
Cast out a scorner — and contention goeth out, And strife and shame cease.
11 El que ama la pureza de corazón, El que tiene gracia en sus labios Tendrá como amigo al propio rey.
Whoso is loving cleanness of heart, Grace [are] his lips, a king [is] his friend.
12 Los ojos de Yavé velan por la verdad, Y Él descubre el engaño de los traicioneros.
The eyes of Jehovah have kept knowledge, And He overthroweth the words of the treacherous.
13 Dice el perezoso: Afuera hay un león. En plena calle me matará.
The slothful hath said, 'A lion [is] without, In the midst of the broad places I am slain.'
14 Abismo profundo es la boca de la mujer ajena. El aborrecido de Yavé caerá allí.
A deep pit [is] the mouth of strange women, The abhorred of Jehovah falleth there.
15 La necedad se pega al corazón del niño. La vara de la corrección se la apartará.
Folly is bound up in the heart of a youth, The rod of chastisement putteth it far from him.
16 El que oprime al pobre enriquece. Quien da al rico se empobrece.
He is oppressing the poor to multiply to him, He is giving to the rich — only to want.
17 Inclina tu oído, escucha las palabras de los sabios Y aplica tu corazón a mis enseñanzas,
Incline thine ear, and hear words of the wise, And thy heart set to my knowledge,
18 Porque será bueno que las guardes dentro de ti, Y las establezcas sobre tus labios,
For they are pleasant when thou dost keep them in thy heart, They are prepared together for thy lips.
19 Para que pongas en Yavé tu confianza. Te instruiré también a ti.
That thy trust may be in Jehovah, I caused thee to know to-day, even thou.
20 ¿No te escribí cosas excelentes de consejos y enseñanzas,
Have I not written to thee three times With counsels and knowledge?
21 Para que conozcas la certeza de los dichos de verdad, Y las hagas llegar a los que te son enviados?
To cause thee to know the certainty of sayings of truth, To return sayings of truth to those sending thee.
22 No explotes al pobre, porque es pobre, Ni atropelles al desgraciado en la puerta,
Rob not the poor because he [is] poor, And bruise not the afflicted in the gate.
23 Porque Yavé defenderá su causa Y quitará la vida a los que la quitan a otro.
For Jehovah pleadeth their cause, And hath spoiled the soul of their spoilers.
24 No hagas amistad con el hombre iracundo, Ni te hagas acompañar del hombre violento,
Shew not thyself friendly with an angry man, And with a man of fury go not in,
25 No sea que te acostumbres a sus caminos, Y coloques lazo a tu propia alma.
Lest thou learn his paths, And have received a snare to thy soul.
26 No seas tú de los que dan la mano, Y salen fiadores de deudas.
Be not thou among those striking hands, Among sureties [for] burdens.
27 Si no tienes con qué pagar, ¿Por qué te quitarán tu propia cama?
If thou hast nothing to pay, Why doth he take thy bed from under thee?
28 No remuevas el lindero antiguo Que colocaron tus antepasados.
Remove not a border of olden times, That thy fathers have made.
29 ¿Has visto hombre diligente en su obra? Estará delante de los reyes y no de la gentuza.
Hast thou seen a man speedy in his business? Before kings he doth station himself, He stations not himself before obscure men!
