Números 22
1 Salieron los hijos de Israel y acamparon en las llanuras de Moab, junto al Jordán, frente a Jericó.
Then the Israelites traveled on and camped in the plains of Moab near the Jordan, across from Jericho.
2 Balac, hijo de Zippor, vio todo lo que Israel hizo a los amorreos.
Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,
3 Moab tuvo gran temor delante del pueblo porque era muy numeroso, y Moab tuvo temor a causa de los hijos de Israel.
and Moab was terrified of the people because they were numerous. Indeed, Moab dreaded the Israelites.
4 Entonces Moab dijo a los ancianos de Madián: Ahora, como el buey lame la hierba del campo, esta multitud lamerá todos nuestros contornos. En aquel tiempo Balac, hijo de Zippor, era rey de Moab.
So the Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “This horde will devour everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” Since Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time,
5 Envió mensajeros a Balaam, hijo de Beor, en Petor, que está junto al Río, en la tierra de los hijos de su pueblo, para que lo llamaran, y dijo: Un pueblo que salió de Egipto cubre la superficie de la tierra y ya está frente a mí.
he sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates in the land of his people. “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt,” said Balak. “They cover the face of the land and have settled next to me.
6 Ven ahora, te ruego, y maldíceme a este pueblo porque es demasiado poderoso para mí. Quizás yo pueda herirlo, y lo echaremos de la tierra, porque yo sé que al que tú bendigas será bendito y al que tú maldigas será maldito.
So please come now and put a curse on this people, because they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land; for I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed.”
7 Fueron, pues, los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián con la paga para el adivino en sus manos. Llegaron a Balaam, y le hablaron las palabras de Balac.
The elders of Moab and Midian departed with the fees for divination in hand. They came to Balaam and relayed to him the words of Balak.
8 Y él les dijo: Alójense aquí esta noche, y yo les comunicaré la Palabra según lo que Yavé me hable. Así que los jefes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.
“Spend the night here,” Balaam replied, “and I will give you the answer that the LORD speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
9 ʼElohim vino a Balaam y le dijo: ¿Quiénes son estos varones que están contigo?
Then God came to Balaam and asked, “Who are these men with you?”
10 Balaam dijo a ʼElohim: Balac, hijo de Zippor, rey de Moab, envió por mí y dijo:
And Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message:
11 Mira, un pueblo que salió de Egipto cubre la superficie de la tierra. Ven ahora, y maldícemelo. Quizás pueda yo luchar contra él y echarlo.
‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps I may be able to fight against them and drive them away.’”
12 Entonces ʼElohim dijo a Balaam: No vayas con ellos ni maldecirás al pueblo, porque es bendito.
But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed.”
13 Balaam se levantó de mañana, y dijo a los jefes de Balac: Regresen a su tierra, porque Yavé se niega a dejarme ir con ustedes.
So Balaam got up the next morning and said to Balak’s princes, “Go back to your homeland, because the LORD has refused to let me go with you.”
14 Los jefes de Moab se levantaron y fueron a Balac y le dijeron: Balaam se negó a venir con nosotros.
And the princes of Moab arose, returned to Balak, and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 Luego Balac volvió a enviar jefes más numerosos y honorables que los otros,
Then Balak sent other princes, more numerous and more distinguished than the first messengers.
16 los cuales fueron a Balaam, y le dijeron: Así dice Balac, hijo de Zippor: Te ruego que no te niegues a venir a mí,
They came to Balaam and said, “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me,
17 porque ciertamente te honraré inmensamente y haré todo lo que me digas. Te ruego, ven ahora, maldíceme a este pueblo.
for I will honor you richly and do whatever you say. So please come and put a curse on this people for me!’”
18 Balaam respondió a los esclavos de Balac: Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de plata y oro, no puedo traspasar la Palabra de Yavé mi ʼElohim para hacer cosa pequeña ni grande.
But Balaam replied to the servants of Balak, “If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything small or great to go beyond the command of the LORD my God.
19 Les ruego ahora que se queden aquí esta noche, y yo averiguaré qué más me dice Yavé.
So now, please stay here overnight as the others did, that I may find out what else the LORD has to tell me.”
20 ʼElohim vino a Balaam de noche y le dijo: Si los hombres vinieron para llamarte, levántate y vé con ellos, pero le dirás solo la Palabra que Yo hable contigo.
That night God came to Balaam and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, get up and go with them, but you must only do what I tell you.”
21 Así que Balaam se levantó por la mañana, enalbardó su asna y fue con los jefes de Moab.
So in the morning Balaam got up, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.
22 Pero mientras él iba, la ira de ʼElohim se encendió, y el Ángel de Yavé se puso en el camino para oponerse a él. Él iba montado en su asna, y sus dos esclavos con él.
Then God’s anger was kindled because Balaam was going along, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding his donkey, and his two servants were with him.
23 Cuando el asna vio al Ángel de Yavé en el camino con su espada desenvainada en su mano, el asna se desvió del camino y se fue por el campo. Entonces Balaam azotó al asna para hacerla volver al camino.
When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the path and went into a field. So Balaam beat her to return her to the path.
24 Pero el Ángel de Yavé estaba en pie en un sendero entre las viñas, el cual tenía una cerca a un lado y una cerca al otro lado.
Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow passage between two vineyards, with walls on either side.
25 Al ver al Ángel de Yavé, el asna se pegó contra la cerca y apretó el pie de Balaam contra la cerca. Y él volvió a azotarla.
And the donkey saw the angel of the LORD and pressed herself against the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her once again.
26 Entonces el Ángel de Yavé pasó más allá y se puso en pie en una angostura donde no había camino para desviarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda.
And the angel of the LORD moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn to the right or left.
27 Al ver al Ángel de Yavé, el asna se echó debajo de Balaam, y Balaam se enojó y azotó al asna con la vara.
When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam, and he became furious and beat her with his staff.
28 Entonces Yavé le abrió la boca al asna, la cual dijo a Balaam: ¿Qué te hice, que me has azotado ya tres veces?
Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?”
29 Balaam respondió al asna: Porque me has maltratado. ¡Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, ahora mismo te mataría!
Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!”
30 Y el asna contestó a Balaam: ¿No soy yo tu asna, en la que has montado toda tu vida hasta hoy? ¿Acostumbro hacerte esto? Y él respondió: No.
But the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not the donkey you have ridden all your life until today? Have I ever treated you this way before?” “No,” he replied.
31 Entonces Yavé abrió los ojos a Balaam y vio al Ángel de Yavé en pie en el camino con su espada desenvainada en la mano. Y Balaam hizo reverencia y se postró sobre su rostro.
Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. And Balaam bowed low and fell facedown.
32 El Ángel de Yavé le preguntó: ¿Por qué has azotado a tu asna estas tres veces? Mira, Yo salí para oponerme a ti, porque tu camino es perverso delante de Mí.
The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you, because your way is perverse before me.
33 El asna me vio y se apartó de delante de Mí estas tres veces. Si no se hubiera apartado de Mí, Yo te habría matado a ti, y a ella la habría dejado viva.
The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away, then by now I would surely have killed you and let her live.”
34 Entonces Balaam dijo al Ángel de Yavé: Pequé, porque no sabía que Tú te pusiste delante de mí en el camino. Pero ahora, si te desagrada, regresaré.
“I have sinned,” Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “for I did not realize that you were standing in the road to confront me. And now, if this is displeasing in your sight, I will go back home.”
35 El Ángel de Yavé dijo a Balaam: Vé con los varones, pero solo hablarás la Palabra que Yo te diga. Y Balaam fue con los jefes de Balac.
But the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but you are to speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 Al oír [el rey] Balac que Balaam iba, salió a recibirlo en la ciudad de Moab que está junto al límite de Arnón, al extremo de su territorio.
When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite city on the Arnon border, at the edge of his territory.
37 Balac dijo a Balaam: ¿No envié a llamarte? ¿Por qué no venías a mí? ¿No puedo yo honrarte?
And he said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why did you not come to me? Am I really not able to richly reward you?”
38 Y Balaam respondió a Balac: ¡Mira, yo vine a ti! ¿Pero podré hablar algo? La Palabra que ʼElohim ponga en mi boca, esa tengo que hablar.
“See, I have come to you,” Balaam replied, “but can I say just anything? I must speak only the word that God puts in my mouth.”
39 Y Balaam fue con Balac, y llegaron a Quiriat-husot.
So Balaam accompanied Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.
40 Balac sacrificó becerros y ovejas, y envió [algo] a Balaam y a los jefes que estaban con él.
Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and he gave portions to Balaam and the princes who were with him.
41 El día siguiente Balac tomó a Balaam y le ordenó subir a Bamot-baal, y desde allí contempló una parte del pueblo.
The next morning, Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-baal. From there he could see the outskirts of the camp of the people.
