1 Jefté galaadita era un guerrero valiente. Era hijo de una prostituta y su padre era Galaad.
Now Yiphthach the Gil'adite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gil'ad had begotten Yiphthach.
2 Pero la esposa de Galaad también le dio hijos. Cuando los hijos de la esposa fueron grandes, expulsaron a Jefté y le dijeron: No tendrás herencia en la casa de nuestro padre, porque tú eres hijo de otra mujer.
And the wife of Gil'ad also bore him sons; and when the sons of the wife were grown up, they drove away Yiphthach, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in the house of our father: for the son of another woman art thou.
3 Por tanto Jefté huyó de la presencia de sus hermanos y vivió en la tierra de Tob. Y se agruparon con Jefté hombres ociosos que salían con él.
And Yiphthach fled away from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there gathered themselves to Yiphthach idle men, and they went out with him.
4 Con el paso del tiempo, aconteció que los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel.
And it came to pass after some time, that the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel.
5 Cuando los hijos de Amón pelearon contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a buscar a Jefté en la tierra de Tob
And it was so, when the children of 'Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gil'ad went to fetch Yiphthach out of the land of Tob.
6 y le dijeron: ¡Ven y serás nuestro jefe para que luchemos contra los hijos de Amón!
And they said unto Yiphthach, Come, and become a leader unto us, that we may fight with the children of 'Ammon.
7 Pero Jefté contestó a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me aborrecieron ustedes y me echaron de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué vienen ahora a mí cuando están en aflicción?
And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, Did ye not hate me, and drive me away out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now, when ye are in distress?
8 Entonces los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: Por esta misma razón nos volvemos ahora a ti, para que vengas con nosotros, luches contra los hijos de Amón y seas caudillo de todos los que vivimos en Galaad.
And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, Therefore are we now come back to thee, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of 'Ammon; and thou shalt become unto us a head, unto all the inhabitants of Gil'ad.
9 Jefté dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacen volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y Yavé me los entrega, ¿seré yo su caudillo?
And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil'ad, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of 'Ammon, and the Lord give them up before me, shall I remain your head?
10 Los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: ¡Yavé sea testigo entre nosotros de lo que dijiste! ¡Haremos así!
And the elders of Gil'ad said unto Yiphthach, The Lord shall be a hearer between us, if we do not so according to thy word.
11 Entonces Jefté salió con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo eligió como su jefe y caudillo de ellos. Y Jefté dijo todas sus palabras delante de Yavé en Mizpa.
Then went Yiphthach with the elders of Gil'ad, and the people appointed him over them as head and as leader; and Yiphthach spoke all his words before the Lord in Mitzpah.
12 Jefté envió mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón y dijo: ¿Qué hay entre tú y yo para que vengas a mí a pelear contra mi tierra?
And Yiphthach sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon, saying, What have I to do with thee, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?
13 El rey de los hijos de Amón contestó a los mensajeros de Jefté: Que cuando Israel subió de Egipto tomó mi tierra, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y el Jordán. Ahora pues, devuélvela en paz.
And the king of the children of 'Ammon said unto the messengers of Yiphthach, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and unto the Jordan: and now restore these [lands] again in peace.
14 Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón
And Yiphthach again sent messengers unto the king of the children of 'Ammon;
15 para decirle: Jefté dice: Israel no tomó la tierra de Moab ni la tierra de los hijos de Amón,
And he said unto him, Thus hath said Yiphthach, Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of 'Ammon;
16 porque cuando Israel subió de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el mar Rojo y llegó a Cades.
For when they came up out of Egypt, Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
17 Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom para decirle: Te ruego me permitas pasar por tu tierra. Pero el rey de Edom no consintió. También envió [mensajeros] al rey de Moab, y tampoco quiso. Así que Israel permaneció en Cades.
And Israel then sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass, I pray thee, through thy land; but the king of Edom would not hearken; and also to the king of Moab they sent; but he would not consent: and Israel remained in Kadesh.
18 Después anduvo por el desierto y rodeó la tierra de Edom y Moab. Llegó por el lado oriental de la tierra de Moab, y acampó al otro lado del [arrollo] Arnón. Pero no entraron por el territorio de Moab, porque el Arnón era el límite de Moab.
Then they wandered through the wilderness, and traveled round the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came from the rising of the sun to the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon: but they came not within the border of Moab; for the Arnon is the boundary of Moab.
19 Entonces Israel envió mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, para decirle: Te ruego que nos permitas pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.
And Israel sent messengers unto Sichon the king of the Emorites, the king of Cheshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
20 Pero Sehón no confió en Israel para darle paso por su territorio, sino reunió a todo su pueblo. Acamparon en Jaas, y peleó contra Israel.
But Sichon trusted not Israel to [let them] pass through his territory; and Sichon assembled all his people, and encamped in Yahaz, and fought against Israel.
21 Pero Yavé, ʼElohim de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en la mano de Israel y los derrotó. E Israel tomó posesión de toda la tierra de los amorreos que vivían en aquella tierra.
and the Lord the God of Israel delivered Sichon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; and Israel took possession of all the land of the Emorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 Así poseyeron todo el territorio de los amorreos, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.
And they took possession of all the territory of the Emorites, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
23 Ahora cuando Yavé, el ʼElohim de Israel, echó a los amorreos de delante de su pueblo Israel, ¿pretendes tú apoderarte de él?
So now the Lord the God of Israel hath dispossessed the Emorites from before his people Israel, and shouldst thou possess it?
24 ¿No posees tú lo que tenían aquellos que Quemos, tu ʼelohim, echó delante de ti? Así nosotros desposeeremos a todo aquel que Yavé, nuestro ʼElohim, eche de delante de nosotros.
Truly! that which Kemosh thy god may give thee to possess, even that canst thou possess; but whatsoever the Lord our God hath driven out from before us, even that will we possess.
25 Y ahora, ¿vales tú más que Balac, hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab? ¿Él tuvo alguna disputa con Israel o hizo guerra contra ellos?
And now art thou then any better than Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
26 Mientras Israel vivió en Hesbón y sus aldeas, en Aroer y sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que están en las riberas del Arnón 300 años, ¿por qué no las recuperaron en ese tiempo?
[And] while Israel hath dwelt in Cheshbon and in its towns, and in 'Ar'or and in its towns, and in all the cities that are along the margins of the Arnon, three hundred years: why did ye not recover them within that time?
27 Así que yo no pequé contra ti, pero tú haces mal conmigo al combatir contra mí. ¡Yavé, el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón!
Whereas I myself have not sinned against thee, and thou doest me wrong to war against me: may the Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the children of Israel and the children of 'Ammon.
28 Pero el rey de los hijos de Amón no escuchó las palabras que Jefté le envió a decir.
Nevertheless the king of the children of 'Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Yiphthach which he had sent to him.
29 Entonces el Espíritu de Yavé vino sobre Jefté, quien atravesó Galaad y Manasés. Pasó a Mizpa de Galaad, y de allí salió hacia los hijos de Amón.
Then came upon Yiphthach the spirit of the Lord, and he passed through Gil'ad and Menasseh, and passed through Mitzpeh of Gil'ad, and from Mitzpeh of Gil'ad he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30 Jefté hizo un voto a Yavé: Si en verdad entregas a los hijos de Amón en mi mano,
And Yiphthach made a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of 'Ammon into my hand,
31 cualquiera que salga a encontrarme por las puertas de mi casa cuando yo regrese en paz de los hijos de Amón, será de Yavé y yo lo ofreceré en holocausto.
Then shall it be, that whatsoever cometh forth out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of 'Ammon, shall belong to the Lord, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.
32 Jefté fue hacia los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos, y Yavé los entregó en su mano.
So Yiphthach passed over unto the children of 'Ammon to fight against them: and the Lord delivered them into his hand.
33 Los derrotó con una matanza muy grande desde Aroer hasta la vega de Las Viñas, 20 aldeas. Así los hijos de Amón fueron sometidos a los hijos de Israel.
And he smote them from 'Aro'er, even till thou comest to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto Abel-keramin, with a very great defeat; and the children of 'Ammon were humbled before the children of Israel.
34 Jefté regresó a su casa en Mizpa, ¡y ahí salía su hija a recibirlo con panderos y danzas! Y ella era la única hija. Fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija.
And Yiphthach came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his sole child; he had beside her neither son nor daughter.
35 Aconteció que, al verla, él rasgó las ropas y dijo: ¡Ay, hija mía! Me destrozaste. Estás entre los que me atribulan, porque abrí mi boca a Yavé y no podré retractarme.
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast bent me down very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
36 Ella entonces le respondió: Padre mío, si diste palabra a Yavé, haz conmigo lo que dijiste, ya que Yavé te vengó de tus enemigos, los hijos de Amón.
And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me in accordance with what hath proceeded out of thy mouth; since the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee on thy enemies, on the children of 'Ammon.
37 Dijo además a su padre: Que se me haga esto: Déjame solo dos meses para que vaya a las montañas y llore por causa de mi virginidad junto con mis compañeras.
And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: Let me alone two months, that I may descend to the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I with my companions.
38 Él entonces respondió: Vé. Y la dejó ir por dos meses. Ella fue con sus compañeras y lloró su virginidad por las montañas.
And he aid, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.
39 Sucedió que pasados los dos meses volvió a su padre, quien cumplió con ella el voto que hizo. Ella nunca se unió a varón. Se volvió una costumbre en Israel,
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, and he fulfilled on her his vow which he had vowed; and she knew no man; and it became a custom in Israel,
40 que cada año las doncellas de Israel vayan a endechar a la hija de Jefté galaadita, cuatro días al año.
That the daughters of Israel went from year to year to lament for the daughter of Yiphthach the Gil'adite four days in the year.
