Josué 9

1 Sucedió que cuando todos los reyes que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, tanto en la región montañosa como en la Sefela y toda la costa del mar Grande hasta el Líbano: el heteo, el amorreo, el cananeo, el ferezeo, el heveo y el jebuseo supieron lo acontecido,

And it cometh to pass, when all the kings who [are] beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the low-country, and in every haven of the great sea, over-against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, hear —

2 se reunieron para luchar juntos contra Josué y contra Israel bajo un solo mando.

that they gather themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Israel — one mouth.

3 Sin embargo, cuando los habitantes de Gabaón oyeron lo que Josué hizo en Jericó y en Hai,

And the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

4 ellos usaron astucia, pues fueron y fingieron ser embajadores. Pusieron sobre sus asnos costales viejos, odres de vino viejos, rotos y remendados,

and they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

5 sandalias viejas y remendadas en los pies, ropas viejas sobre ellos, y todo el pan que llevaban para el camino estaba seco y mohoso.

and sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry — it was crumbs.

6 Así llegaron al campamento en Gilgal ante Josué y le dijeron a él y a los israelitas: Venimos de una tierra lejana. Hagan ahora un pacto con nosotros.

And they go unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, and say unto him, and unto the men of Israel, 'From a land far off we have come, and now, make with us a covenant;'

7 Los hombres de Israel respondieron a aquellos heveos: Tal vez ustedes viven en medio de nuestra tierra, ¿cómo, pues, haremos un pacto con ustedes?

and the men of Israel say unto the Hivite, 'It may be in our midst ye are dwelling, and how do we make with thee a covenant?'

8 Y dijeron a Josué: Somos esclavos tuyos. Entonces Josué les dijo: ¿Quiénes son ustedes? ¿De dónde vienen?

and they say unto Joshua, 'Thy servants we [are].' And Joshua saith unto them, 'Who [are] ye? and whence come ye?'

9 A lo cual ellos respondieron: Tus esclavos llegaron de un país muy lejano por causa del Nombre de Yavé tu ʼElohim, pues oímos la fama de Él, todo lo que Él hizo en Egipto,

And they say unto him, 'From a land very far off have thy servants come, for the name of Jehovah thy God, for we have heard His fame, and all that He hath done in Egypt,

10 y a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: a Sehón, rey de Hesbón, y Og, rey de Basán, quien vivía en Astarot.

and all that He hath done to the two kings of the Amorite who [are] beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who [is] in Ashtaroth.

11 Por lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestra tierra nos hablaron: Tomen en sus manos provisión para el camino, vayan al encuentro con ellos y díganles: Nosotros somos sus esclavos. Hagan ahora un pacto con nosotros.

'And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we [are], and now, make with us a covenant;

12 Este pan estaba caliente cuando lo tomamos de nuestras casas como provisión para el camino el día cuando salimos a fin de llegar a ustedes, pero ahora, míralo aquí seco y mohoso.

this our bread — hot we provided ourselves with it out of our houses, on the day of our coming out to go unto you, and now, lo, it is dry, and hath been crumbs;

13 Estos odres de vino los llenamos nuevos, y míralos aquí rotos, y nuestras ropas y nuestras sandalias desgastadas por lo largo del camino.

and these [are] the wine-bottles which we filled, new, and lo, they have rent; and these, our garments and our sandals, have become old, from the exceeding greatness of the way.'

14 Entonces los hombres de Israel tomaron de sus provisiones [y les dieron], pero no pidieron consejo de Yavé.

And the men take of their provision, and the mouth of Jehovah have not asked;

15 Josué hizo paz con ellos e hizo un pacto con ellos de preservarles la vida. Los jefes de la congregación también les hicieron juramento.

and Joshua maketh with them peace, and maketh with them a covenant, to keep them alive; and swear to them do the princes of the company.

16 Sucedió que tres días después de hacer el pacto con ellos, oyeron decir que eran sus vecinos y que vivían dentro de su tierra.

And it cometh to pass, at the end of three days after that they have made with them a covenant, that they hear that they [are] their neighbours — that in their midst they are dwelling.

17 Entonces los hijos de Israel salieron, y al tercer día llegaron a las ciudades de aquéllos. Y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafira, Beerot, y Quiriat-jearim.

And the sons of Israel journey and come in unto their cities on the third day — and their cities [are] Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-Jearim —

18 Los hijos de Israel no los mataron porque los jefes de la congregación les hicieron juramento por Yavé, ʼElohim de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuró contra los jefes.

and the sons of Israel have not smitten them, for sworn to them have the princes of the company by Jehovah God of Israel, and all the company murmur against the princes.

19 Todos los jefes respondieron a toda la congregación: Juramos por Yavé, ʼElohim de Israel, por tanto, ahora no los podemos tocar.

And all the princes say unto all the company, 'We — we have sworn to them by Jehovah, God of Israel; and now, we are not able to come against them;

20 Esto haremos con ellos para dejarlos vivir, y así la ira no caerá sobre nosotros a causa del juramento que les hicimos.

this we do to them, and have kept them alive, and wrath is not upon us, because of the oath which we have sworn to them.'

21 Los jefes dijeron con respecto a ellos: Déjenlos vivir. Y fueron leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación, según los jefes les prometieron.

And the princes say unto them, 'They live, and are hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the company, as the princes spake to them.'

22 Josué entonces los llamó y les habló: ¿Por qué nos engañaron y dijeron: Vivimos muy lejos de ustedes, pero en realidad viven en medio de nosotros?

And Joshua calleth for them, and speaketh unto them, saying, 'Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, and ye in our midst dwelling?

23 Ahora pues, malditos son ustedes. Nunca faltarán de entre ustedes esclavos, ni leñadores y aguadores para la Casa de mi ʼElohim.

and now, cursed are ye, and none of you is cut off [from being] a servant, even hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.'

24 Ellos respondieron a Josué: Porque tus esclavos ciertamente fueron informados que Yavé tu ʼElohim ordenó a su esclavo Moisés que les diera toda esta tierra y destruyera a todos los habitantes de esta tierra que está ante ustedes. Por tanto tuvimos muchísimo temor por nuestras vidas a causa de ustedes, e hicimos esto.

And they answer Joshua and say, 'Because it was certainly declared to thy servants, that Jehovah thy God commanded Moses His servant to give to you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we fear greatly for ourselves because of you, and we do this thing;

25 Ahora pues, estamos en tus manos. Haz con nosotros como te parezca bien y justo.

and now, lo, we [are] in thy hand, as [it is] good, and as [it is] right in thine eyes to do to us — do.'

26 Él lo hizo así, y los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel para que no los mataran.

And he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

27 Aquel día Josué los designó como leñadores y aguadores para la congregación y para el altar de Yavé en el lugar que Él escogiera. Lo cual son hasta hoy.

and Joshua maketh them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the company, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, at the place which He doth choose.
