Juan 11
1 Estaba enfermo Lázaro de Betania, la aldea de las hermanas María y Marta.
Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 María, hermana de Lázaro, fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume y le secó los pies con sus cabellos.
(Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was sick.)
3 Las hermanas mandaron a decirle [a Jesús]: Señor, mira, el que amas está enfermo.
So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, behold, the one yoʋ love is sick.”
4 Cuando Jesús [lo] oyó, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios a fin de que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.
But when Jesus heard this, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
5 Jesús amaba a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.
Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
6 Pero cuando oyó que [Lázaro] estaba enfermo, a propósito permaneció dos días [más] donde estaba.
But when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.
7 Después dijo a sus discípulos: Regresemos a Judea.
After that he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
8 Sus discípulos le contestaron: Maestro, hace poco los judíos intentaban apedrearte, ¿y otra vez volverás allá?
The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just recently seeking to stone yoʋ, and yet you are going there again?”
9 Jesús respondió: ¿No hay 12 horas en el día? Si alguno anda de día, no tropieza porque ve la luz de este mundo.
Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 Pero si alguno anda de noche, tropieza porque la luz no está en él.
But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11 Después les dijo: Nuestro amigo Lázaro durmió, pero voy a despertarlo.
After saying this, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 Entonces sus discípulos le dijeron: Señor, si duerme sanará.
His disciples said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
13 Pero Jesús hablaba de la muerte de él, y ellos supusieron que hablaba del reposo del sueño.
(They thought Jesus was speaking about natural sleep, but he was actually speaking about Lazarus' death.)
14 Entonces Jesús les aclaró: Lázaro murió.
Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died,
15 Me alegro que no estaba allá por causa de ustedes, para que crean. Pero vamos a él.
and I rejoice for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Entonces Tomás el Dídimo dijo a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros para que muramos con Él.
Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to his fellow disciples, “Let us go too, so that we may die with him.”
17 Cuando Jesús llegó, halló que [Lázaro] ya tenía cuatro días en el sepulcro.
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.
18 Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a tres kilómetros.
Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
19 Muchos judíos habían ido para consolar a Marta y María por [la muerte de] su hermano.
and many of the Jews had joined the women who were with Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother.
20 Cuando Marta oyó que Jesús llegaba, salió a encontrarlo, pero María permaneció en la casa.
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
21 Entonces Marta dijo a Jesús: ¡Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano!
Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if yoʋ had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 Ahora también sé que todo lo que Tú pidas a Dios, te lo dará.
But even now I know that God will give yoʋ whatever yoʋ ask of him.”
23 Jesús le dijo: Tu hermano resucitará.
Jesus said to her, “Yoʋr brother will rise again.”
24 Marta le respondió: Sé que resucitará en la resurrección el día final.
Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
25 Jesús le dijo: Yo soy la Resurrección y la Vida. El que cree en Mí, aunque muera, vivirá.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, yet shall he live.
No one who lives and believes in me will ever die. Do yoʋ believe this?” (aiōn g165)
27 Le contestó: Sí, Señor. Yo creo que Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios que vino al mundo.
She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that yoʋ are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
28 Después de decir esto, fue y llamó a su hermana María. Le dijo en privado: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.
After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for yoʋ.”
29 Cuando ella [lo] oyó, se levantó de prisa y fue hacia Él.
When Mary heard this, she rose quickly and went to him.
30 Jesús aún no había llegado a la aldea, sino estaba en el lugar donde Marta lo recibió.
(Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha had met him.)
31 Entonces los judíos que la consolaban en la casa, al ver que María salió de prisa, la siguieron, porque pensaron que iba a llorar en el sepulcro.
When the Jews who were in the house with Mary, consoling her, saw her rise quickly and go out, they followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32 María llegó donde estaba Jesús, se postró a sus pies y le dijo: ¡Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano!
When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if yoʋ had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 Cuando Jesús vio que María y los judíos que llegaron con ella lloraban, gimió en el espíritu. Se conmovió profundamente
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and troubled.
34 y preguntó: ¿Dónde lo pusieron? Le respondieron: Señor, ven y mira.
He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Jesús lloró.
Jesus wept.
36 Entonces los judíos decían: ¡Miren cómo lo amaba!
So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
37 Éste, Quien abrió los ojos del ciego, ¿no podría lograr también que éste no muriera?
But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have also kept this man from dying?”
38 Jesús otra vez profundamente conmovido fue a la tumba. Era una cueva. Una piedra estaba colocada sobre ella.
Deeply moved once more, Jesus came to the tomb. (It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.)
39 Jesús ordenó: Quiten la piedra. Marta, la hermana del muerto, le dijo: Señor, ya hiede porque es [el] cuarto día.
Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the man who had died, said to him, “Lord, there is already a stench, for it is the fourth day.”
40 Jesús le preguntó: ¿No te dije que si crees verás la gloria de Dios?
Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell yoʋ that if yoʋ believed yoʋ would see the glory of God?”
41 Quitaron la piedra. Entonces Jesús levantó los ojos y dijo: ¡Padre, te doy gracias porque me escuchaste!
So they took away the stone from where the dead man was lying. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank yoʋ that yoʋ have heard me.
42 Yo sé que siempre me escuchas, pero [lo] dije por causa de la multitud que está alrededor, para que crean que Tú me enviaste.
I know that yoʋ always hear me, but I say this for the benefit of the crowd that is standing here, so that they may believe that yoʋ sent me.”
43 Después de decir esto, clamó a gran voz: ¡Lázaro, ven fuera!
After saying this, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 Y el muerto salió con vendas en los pies y las manos. Su cara había sido envuelta en un sudario. Jesús les ordenó: ¡Desátenlo y déjenlo ir!
Then the man who had died came out, his feet and his hands bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
45 Muchos de los judíos que fueron a consolar a María, al ver lo que [Jesús] hizo, creyeron en Él.
Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.
46 Pero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les contaron lo que Jesús hizo.
But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47 Entonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron al Tribunal Supremo y dijeron: ¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre realiza muchas señales.
So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a meeting of the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do? For this man is doing many signs.
48 Si lo dejamos así, todos creerán en Él. Vendrán los romanos y nos quitarán tanto el Templo como la nación.
If we allow him to continue like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our holy place and our nation.”
49 Entonces Caifás, sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: Ustedes nada saben,
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You do not know anything,
50 ni consideran que es bueno que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que perezca toda la nación.
nor do you consider that it is better for us to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation perish.”
51 Pero no dijo esto por iniciativa propia, sino porque, como aquel año era sumo sacerdote, profetizó que Jesús estaba destinado a morir por la nación,
(He said this not of his own accord, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
52 y no solo por la nación, sino también para congregar en uno a los dispersados hijos de Dios.
and not only for the nation, but also to gather together and unite the children of God scattered abroad.)
53 Desde aquel día decidieron matarlo.
So from that day they plotted together to kill him.
54 Por tanto Jesús ya no andaba en público entre los judíos, sino que se retiró a Efraín, un poblado cercano al desierto. Allí permaneció con sus discípulos.
Therefore Jesus no longer went around openly among the Jews. Instead, he departed from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, where he spent time with his disciples.
55 Estaba cerca la Pascua de los judíos, y muchos de la región subieron a Jerusalén antes de la Pascua para purificarse.
Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many people went up to Jerusalem from the countryside to purify themselves before the Passover.
56 Buscaban a Jesús, y en el Templo se preguntaban unos a otros: ¿Qué les parece? ¿Que de ningún modo viene a la fiesta?
They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”
57 Los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado órdenes para que si alguno supiera dónde estaba, informara a fin de detenerlo.
(Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given an order that if anyone knew where Jesus was, he should report it, so that they could arrest him.)
