Job 4

1 Entonces intervino Elifaz temanita:

Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said: —

2 Si intentamos razonar contigo te será molesto. Pero, ¿quién puede refrenarse de hablar?

If one attempt a word unto thee, wilt thou be impatient? But, to restrain speech, who, can endure?

3 Ciertamente tú enseñabas a muchos y fortalecías las manos débiles.

Lo! thou hast admonished many, and, slack hands, hast thou been wont to uphold:

4 Tus palabras levantaban al que tropezaba y afirmabas las rodillas decaídas.

Him that was stumbling, have thy words raised up, and, sinking knees, hast thou strengthened.

5 Pero ahora te sucede a ti. Te desalientas, te tocó a ti y te turbas.

But, now, it cometh upon thee, and thou despairest, It smiteth even thee, and thou art dismayed.

6 ¿No es tu temor a ʼElohim tu confianza, y la integridad de tus procedimientos tu esperanza?

Is not, thy reverence, thy confidence? And is not, thy hope, the very integrity of thy ways?

7 Te ruego que recuerdes: ¿Quién pereció jamás por ser inocente? ¿Dónde fueron destruidos los rectos?

Remember, I pray thee, who, being innocent, hath perished, or when, the upright, have been cut off.

8 Según veo, los que aran iniquidad y siembran aflicción, las cosechan.

So far as I have seen, They who plow for iniquity and sow misery, reap the same:

9 Por el aliento de ʼElohim perecen, y por el soplo de su ira son consumidos.

By the blast of GOD, they perish, And, by the breath of his nostrils, are they consumed:

10 El rugido del león, la voz fiera de la leona y los dientes de sus cachorros son quebrados.

[Notwithstanding] the roaring of the lion, and the noise of the howling lion, yet, the teeth of the fierce lions, are broken:

11 El león viejo perece por falta de presa, y los cachorros de la leona se dispersan.

The strong lion perishing for lack of prey, Even the whelps of the lioness, are scattered.

12 Entonces un mensaje me llegó a hurtadillas, y mi oído percibió un susurro de él

But, unto me, something was brought by stealth, —and mine ear caught a whispering of the same:

13 en inquietantes visiones nocturnas, cuando el sueño profundo cae sobre los hombres.

When there were thoughts, from visions of the night, —When deep sleep falleth upon men,

14 Un terror se apoderó de mí, y todos mis huesos se estremecieron.

Dread, came upon me, and trembling, The multitude of my bones, it put in dread:

15 Al pasar un espíritu frente a mí se eriza el pelo de mi cuerpo.

Then, a spirit, over my face, floated along, The hair of my flesh bristled-up:

16 Se detiene, pero no distingo su semblante. Una apariencia está delante de mis ojos, hay silencio… y oigo una voz reposada:

It stood still, but I could not distinguish its appearance, I looked, but there was no form before mine eyes, —A whispering voice, I heard: —

17 ¿Será el hombre más justo que ʼElohim? ¿El hombre, más puro que su Hacedor?

Shall, mortal man, be more just than GOD? Or a man be more pure than, his Maker?

18 Ciertamente en sus esclavos no confía, y a sus ángeles atribuye insensatez.

Lo! in his own servants, he trusteth not, and, his own messengers, he chargeth with error:

19 ¡Cuánto más los que viven en casas de barro cimentadas en el polvo serán desmenuzados por la polilla!

How much more the dwellers in houses of clay, which, in the dust, have their foundation, which are crushed sooner than a moth:

20 Entre la mañana y la tarde son destruidos, y sin que alguno se dé cuenta, perecen para siempre.

Betwixt morning and evening, are they broken in pieces, With none to save, they utterly perish:

21 ¿No les son arrancadas las cuerdas de sus tiendas? En ellas mueren, pero no adquirieron sabiduría.

Is not their tent-rope within them, torn away? They die, disrobed of wisdom!
