Jeremías 40

1 Palabra de Yavé que vino a Jeremías, después que Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, lo envió desde Ramá, cuando lo encontró encadenado entre todos los cautivos de Jerusalén y de Judá que iban deportados a Babilonia.

The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, had let him go from Ramah. For he had taken him, and he had been bound with chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah which were carried away captive to Babylon.

2 El capitán de la guardia apartó a Jeremías y le dijo: Yavé tu ʼElohim predijo este mal contra este lugar.

And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him: “Jehovah, thy God, pronounced this evil against this place;

3 Yavé lo trajo y lo hizo según lo dijo, porque pecaron contra Yavé y no oyeron su voz. Por eso les vino esto a ustedes.

and now Jehovah hath brought it, and done according as he spake, because ye sinned against Jehovah, and obeyed not his voice; therefore hath this thing come upon you.

4 Ahora, mira, hoy te libro de las cadenas que están en tus manos. Si te parece bien ir conmigo a Babilonia, ven, y yo velaré por ti. Si no te parece bien ir conmigo a Babilonia, permanece aquí. Mira, toda la tierra está delante de ti. Vé adonde te parezca mejor y conveniente.

And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains upon thy hands. If it seem good to thee to come with me to Babylon, come; and I will set my eyes upon thee; but if it seem evil to thee to come with me to Babylon, forbear; behold, the whole land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and desirable for thee to go, thither go.”

5 Como Jeremías aún no regresaba, [le dijo]: Regresa hacia Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, al cual el rey de Babilonia dio autoridad sobre todas las ciudades de Judá. Vive con él en medio del pueblo, o vé adonde te parezca mejor. El capitán de la guardia le dio provisiones y un presente, y lo despidió.

And while he was not yet gone away [[he said]]: “Go to Gedaliah, the of son Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go whithersoever it seemeth good to thee to go.” And the captain of the guard gave him provisions, and a present, and dismissed him.

6 Entonces Jeremías fue a estar con Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, en Mizpa, y vivió con él en medio del pueblo que quedó en la tierra.

And Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

7 Ahora bien, todos los comandantes del ejército que estaban en el campo con sus hombres, oyeron que el rey de Babilonia dio autoridad sobre la tierra a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, y que le había encomendado a hombres, mujeres y niños de los más pobres de la tierra que no fueron deportados a Babilonia.

Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, governor over the land, and had committed to his charge men and women and children, of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon,

8 Entonces fueron a visitar a Gedalías en Mizpa: Ismael, hijo de Netanías, Johanán y Jonatán, hijos de Carea, Seraías, hijo de Tanhumet, los hijos de Efai netofatita, y Jezanías, hijo de un maacateo, ellos y sus hombres.

then they came to Gedaliah, to Mizpah; namely, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan, the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah, the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah, the son of the Maachathite, they and their men;

9 Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, les juró a ellos y a sus hombres: No tengan temor de servir a los caldeos. Vivan en la tierra, obedezcan al rey de Babilonia y tendrán bien.

and Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and to their men, saying, “Fear not to serve the Chaldaeans; dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

10 Miren, yo tengo que vivir en Mizpa, a disposición de los caldeos que vendrán a inspeccionarnos. Tomen el vino, los frutos de verano y el aceite. Pónganlos en sus depósitos. Quédense en sus ciudades donde les corresponda ocupar.

As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldaeans, who shall come to us; but ye, gather ye in wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities which ye have taken.”

11 También los otros judíos que vivían en Moab entre los hijos de Amón, en Edom y los que estaban en todas las tierras, cuando oyeron que el rey de Babilonia dejó a algunos en Judá, y que dieron autoridad a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, sobre ellos,

Also when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant to Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

12 todos estos judíos regresaron de todos los lugares adonde fueron echados. Llegaron a tierra de Judá a visitar a Gedalías en Mizpa y recogieron vino y abundantes frutos.

then all the Jews returned from all the places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in abundance.

13 Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los comandantes que estaban en el campo llegaron a Gedalías en Mizpa,

And Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah, to Mizpah,

14 y le dijeron: ¿No sabes que Baalis, rey de los hijos de Amón, envió a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, para matarte? Pero Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, no les creyó.

and said to him, “Dost thou know that Baalis, the king of the children of Ammon, hath sent Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, to slay thee?” But Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, believed them not.

15 Entonces Johanán, hijo de Carea, habló secretamente a Gedalías en Mizpa y le dijo: Yo iré ahora y mataré a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, y nadie lo sabrá. ¿Por qué te va a matar para que todos los judíos que se reunieron contigo se dispersen, y perezca el resto de Judá?

And Johanan, the son of Kareah, spake to Gedaliah in private at Mizpah, saying, “Let me go, I pray thee, and smite Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it. Wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered to thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish?”

16 Pero Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, dijo a Johanán, hijo de Carea: No hagas esto, porque es falso lo que tú dices de Ismael.

But Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, said to Johanan, the son of Kareah, “Thou shalt not do this thing, for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.”
