Ester 3

1 Después de estas cosas, el rey Asuero engrandeció a Amán, hijo de Hamedata, el agageo. Lo ensalzó y estableció su autoridad por encima de todos los jefes que estaban con él.

And after this king Artaxerxes highly honoured Aman [son] of Amadathes, the Bugæan, and exalted him, and set his seat above all his friends.

2 Todos los súbditos del rey que estaban en la puerta real se inclinaban y reverenciaban a Amán, porque así lo dispuso el rey. Pero Mardoqueo no se inclinaba ante él ni lo reverenciaba.

And all in the palace did him obeisance, for so the king had given orders to do: but Mardochæus did not do him obeisance.

3 Los súbditos del rey que estaban en la puerta real preguntaban a Mardoqueo: ¿Por qué transgredes el mandato del rey?

And they in the king’s palace said to Mardochæus, Mardochæus, why dost thou transgress the commands of the king?

4 Como ellos le preguntaban cada día y él no les prestaba atención, ocurrió que lo denunciaron ante Amán, para ver si Mardoqueo se mantendría firme en su conducta, porque él les declaró que era judío.

[Thus] they spoke daily to him, but he hearkened not unto them; so they represented to Aman that Mardochæus resisted the commands of the king: and Mardochæus had shewn to them that he was a Jew.

5 Cuando Amán observó que Mardoqueo no se inclinaba ni le hacía reverencia, se llenó de furor.

And when Aman understood that Mardochæus did not obeisance to him, he was greatly enraged,

6 Pero tuvo en poco poner las manos solamente sobre Mardoqueo. Como ellos le declararon cuál era la nacionalidad de Mardoqueo, Amán procuró exterminar a todos los judíos que estaban en todo el reino de Asuero, por ser el pueblo de Mardoqueo.

and took counsel to destroy utterly all the Jews who were under the rule of Artaxerxes.

7 El mes primero, el mes de Nisán, el año 12 del rey Asuero, Amán hizo echar Pur, es decir, suertes, delante de él, día por día y mes por mes, y la suerte salió para el mes doce, el mes de Adar.

And he made a decree in the twelfth year of the reign of Artaxerxes, and cast lots daily and monthly, to slay in one day the race of Mardochæus: and the lot fell on the fourteenth [day] of the month which is Adar.

8 Entonces Amán dijo al rey Asuero: Existe un pueblo esparcido y disperso entre los pueblos de todas las provincias de tu reino, cuyas leyes son distintas de las de cualquier otro pueblo, y no cumplen las leyes del rey, por lo que no conviene que el rey los tolere.

And he spoke to king Artaxerxes, saying, There is a nation scattered among the nations in all thy kingdom, and their laws differ from [those of] all the [other] nations; and they disobey the laws of the king; and it is not expedient for the king to let them alone.

9 Si parece bien al rey, que se decrete su destrucción, y yo pesaré 330 toneladas de plata en manos de los que manejan la hacienda, para que las depositen en los tesoros del rey.

If it seem good to the king, let him make a decree to destroy them: and I will remit into the king’s treasury ten thousand talents of silver.

10 Entonces el rey se quitó el sello de su mano y se lo dio a Amán, hijo de Hamedata, el agageo, adversario de los judíos.

And the king took off his ring, and gave it into the hands of Aman, to seal the decrees against the Jews.

11 El rey dijo a Amán: La plata sea para ti, y también el pueblo, para que hagas con él lo que te parezca bien.

And the king said to Aman, Keep the silver, and treat the nation as thou wilt.

12 El día 13 del mes primero llamaron a los secretarios del rey y escribieron todo lo que Amán ordenó a los sátrapas del rey, a los gobernadores de cada provincia y a los jefes de cada pueblo y provincia según su escritura y su lengua. Fue escrito en nombre del rey Asuero y sellado con el sello real.

So the king’s recorders were called in the first month, on the thirteenth [day], and they wrote as Aman commanded to the captains and governors in every province, from India even to Ethiopia, to a hundred and twenty-seven provinces; and to the rulers of the nations according to their [several] languages, in the name of king Artaxerxes.

13 Los decretos fueron enviados por medio de mensajeros especiales a todas las provincias del rey, con la orden de destruir, asesinar y exterminar a todos los judíos, tanto jóvenes como viejos, niños y mujeres, en un mismo día, el 13 del mes duodécimo, el mes de Adar, y saquear sus bienes como despojo.

And [the message] was sent by posts throughout the kingdom of Artaxerxes, to destroy utterly the race of the Jews on the first day of the twelfth month, which is Adar, and to plunder their goods.

14 Una copia del documento que debía darse como ley en cada provincia sería publicada para cada pueblo a fin de que estuvieran preparados para aquel día.

And the copies of the letters were published in every province; and an order was given to all the nations to be ready against that day.

15 Los mensajeros salieron con prisa por mandato del rey, pues el edicto fue promulgado en Susa, la capital. El rey y Amán se sentaron a beber, mientras la ciudad de Susa estaba perpleja.

And the business was hastened, and [that] at Susa: and the king and Aman began to drink; but the city was troubled.
