Hechos 19
1 Mientras Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo recorrió las costas del norte y llegó a Éfeso. Halló a unos discípulos
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples.
2 y les preguntó: ¿Después que creyeron, recibieron el Espíritu Santo? Y contestaron: ¡Ni siquiera oímos que hay Espíritu Santo!
He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 Y les volvió a preguntar: ¿En qué [nombre] fueron bautizados? Y ellos respondieron: En el bautismo de Juan.
He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4 Entonces Pablo dijo: Juan bautizó con un bautismo de cambio de mente, y anunció al pueblo que creyeran en el que vendría, es decir, en Jesús.
Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.”
5 Cuando oyeron esto, fueron bautizados en el Nombre del Señor Jesús.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 Cuando Pablo les impuso [las] manos, el Espíritu Santo vino sobre ellos. Hablaban en lenguas y profetizaban.
When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.
7 En total eran unos 12 hombres.
They were about twelve men in all.
8 Entró en la congregación de los judíos y hablaba osadamente durante tres meses. Discutía y persuadía con respecto al reino de Dios.
He entered into the synagogue and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom.
9 Pero como algunos se endurecieron y no creyeron, maldijeron el Camino delante de la multitud. Pablo se apartó de ellos y se llevó a los discípulos. Discutía cada día en la escuela de Tirano
But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
10 durante dos años, de manera que todos los que vivían en Asia, judíos y griegos, oyeron la Palabra del Señor.
This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
11 Dios hacía milagros extraordinarios por medio de Pablo.
God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,
12 Incluso les llevaban a los enfermos pañuelos o delantales de su cuerpo, y eran sanados de sus dolencias y salían los espíritus malos.
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out.
13 Entonces algunos judíos exorcistas ambulantes también intentaron invocar el Nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los que tenían espíritus malignos, y decían: ¡Los conjuro por Jesús, el que predica Pablo!
But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
14 Esto lo hacían siete hijos de un tal Esceva, sumo sacerdote judío.
There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.
15 Pero el espíritu maligno les respondió: Conozco a Jesús y entiendo a Pablo, pero ustedes, ¿quiénes son?
The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”
16 El hombre en quien estaba el espíritu maligno se abalanzó sobre ellos y dominó a dos. Prevaleció contra ellos de tal modo que huyeron de aquella casa desnudos y heridos.
The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 Todos los habitantes de Éfeso, judíos y griegos, supieron esto. El temor se apoderó de todos ellos, y el Nombre del Señor Jesús era engrandecido.
This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 Muchos creyentes llegaban, confesaban y declaraban sus malas prácticas.
Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds.
19 Entonces muchos de los que practicaban las magias, recogieron los rollos y [los] quemaron públicamente. Calcularon su costo: 50.000 piezas de plata.
Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 Así crecía poderosamente y prevalecía la Palabra del Señor.
So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.
21 Después que ocurrió esto, Pablo pasó por Macedonia y Acaya. Luego decidió en su espíritu ir a Jerusalén. Y dijo: Después que vaya allí, también necesito ir a Roma.
Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
22 Luego envió a sus ayudantes Timoteo y Erasto a Macedonia y él permaneció un tiempo en Asia.
Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
23 En aquel tiempo hubo un gran alboroto con respecto al Camino.
About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way.
24 Demetrio, un platero que hacía templos de plata de Artemisa, conseguía mucha ganancia para los diseñadores.
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,
25 Los reunió juntamente con sus artesanos. Les dijo: Varones, sabemos que nuestra prosperidad se basa en este negocio.
whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.
26 Pero ustedes ven y oyen que este Pablo persuadió a una considerable multitud en Éfeso y en casi toda Asia, y la desvió cuando dijo que no son dioses los que se hacen con las manos.
You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.
27 Con esto se corren riesgos: nuestro negocio sería desacreditado. También el templo de la gran diosa Artemisa sería estimado como nada, y aquella diosa, a quien toda Asia y la humanidad adoran, sería despojada de su grandeza.
Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”
28 Cuando escucharon [esto], gritaban llenos de furia: ¡Grande es Artemisa de [los] efesios!
When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29 La ciudad se alborotó. Irrumpieron unánimes en el teatro y arrebataron a Gayo y Aristarco, macedonios compañeros de viaje de Pablo.
The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.
30 Cuando Pablo quiso entrar en la asamblea popular, los discípulos no le permitieron.
When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.
31 También algunos amigos suyos, hombres ricos e influyentes de Asia, le enviaron [aviso] y le rogaban que no se presentara al teatro.
Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.
32 Unos gritaban una cosa, y otros otra, porque la concurrencia estaba aturdida. La mayoría no sabía por qué se habían reunido.
Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.
33 De entre la multitud instruyeron a Alejandro, y los judíos lo empujaron. Entonces Alejandro hizo señal de silencio con la mano y quería defenderse ante el pueblo.
They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.
34 Pero al saber que era judío, surgió una sola voz de todos. Gritaron como por dos horas: ¡Grande es Artemisa de los efesios!
But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35 Entonces el escribano calmó a la multitud y dijo: Varones efesios, ¿hay alguno de los hombres que no sabe que la ciudad de los efesios es guardiana de la gran Artemisa que cayó del cielo?
When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?
36 Por cuanto esto es indiscutible, es necesario estar calmados y no actuar con precipitación.
Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash.
37 Trajeron a estos hombres que no roban templos ni blasfeman a nuestra deidad.
For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.
38 Si Demetrio y los diseñadores que lo acompañan tienen acusación contra alguien, los tribunales están abiertos y hay procónsules. Presenten cargos unos contra otros.
If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.
39 Si desean saber algo más, en legítima asamblea será decidido.
But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
40 Porque por lo de hoy, aun corremos el peligro de ser acusados de rebelión, ya que no existe causa con la cual podremos dar razón del alboroto.
For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”
41 Después de decir esto, disolvió la reunión.
When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
