1 Samuel 5
1 Cuando los filisteos tomaron el Arca de ʼElohim, la llevaron de Ebenezer a Asdod.
After the army of the Philistia people-group captured God’s sacred chest in Ebenezer [town], they took it to Ashdod [which is one of their biggest cities].
2 Los filisteos tomaron el Arca de ʼElohim, la introdujeron en el templo de Dagón y la pusieron junto a Dagón.
They carried it into the temple of [their god] Dagon, and placed it alongside a statue of Dagon.
3 Cuando los de Asdod madrugaron el día siguiente, ¡ahí estaba Dagón postrado en tierra ante el Arca de Yavé! Y tomaron a Dagón y lo devolvieron a su sitio.
But early the next morning, when the people of Ashdod [went to see it, they saw that] the statue had fallen on its face in front of Yahweh’s sacred chest! So they set the statue up in its place again.
4 El día siguiente, al volver a levantarse de mañana, ¡ahí estaba Dagón tendido, caído en tierra ante el Arca de Yavé! Y la cabeza de Dagón y sus manos estaban cortadas en la entrada. Solo le quedó a Dagón el tronco.
But the following morning, [they saw that] it had fallen down in front of the sacred chest again. But this time, the statue’s head and hands had broken off, and were lying in the doorway. Only its body remained intact/unbroken.
5 Por esta causa, los sacerdotes de Dagón y todos los que entran en el templo de Dagón, no pisan la entrada de Dagón en Asdod hasta hoy.
That is the reason that since that time, the priests of Dagon and everyone else who enters the temple of Dagon in Ashdod do not step on the doorsill [where the hands and head of Dagon fell].
6 La mano de Yavé se endureció sobre los de Asdod y los castigó. En Asdod y en todos sus alrededores los hirió con tumores.
Then Yahweh [SYN] powerfully caused the people of Ashdod and the people who lived in nearby villages to have (a very great plague/serious illness) of tumors.
7 Cuando los hombres de Asdod vieron que eso era así, dijeron: El Arca del ʼElohim de Israel no debe permanecer con nosotros, porque su mano es dura contra nosotros y contra Dagón, nuestro ʼelohim.
The men of Ashdod realized why this was happening, and they cried out, “The god of the Israeli people is punishing us and is also punishing our god Dagon. So we cannot allow the sacred chest of the god of the Israelis to remain here!”
8 Convocaron a todos los jefes de los filisteos y dijeron: ¿Qué hacemos con el Arca del ʼElohim de Israel? Y ellos respondieron: Que el Arca del ʼElohim de Israel sea trasladada a Gat. Y trasladaron el Arca del ʼElohim de Israel.
They summoned the five kings of the Philistia people-group, and asked them, “What should we do with the sacred chest of the god of the Israelis?” The kings replied, “Take the sacred chest to Gath [city].” So they moved it to Gath.
9 Pero sucedió, después que la trasladaron, que la mano de Yavé cayó contra la ciudad y causó gran consternación. Golpeó a los hombres de aquella ciudad, desde el pequeño hasta el grande, y se llenaron de tumores.
But after they took it to Gath, Yahweh powerfully struck the people of that city also, with the result that many men, including young men and old men, got tumors on their skin. Then the people became very afraid.
10 Entonces enviaron el Arca de ʼElohim a Ecrón. Y cuando el Arca de ʼElohim llegó a Ecrón, los ecronitas dieron voces y dijeron: ¡Trajeron el Arca del ʼElohim de Israel para matarnos a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo!
So they took the sacred chest to Ekron [city]. But when the men carried the sacred chest into Ekron, the people there cried out, “Why are you bringing the sacred chest of the God of the Israelis into our city [RHQ]? [By doing that] you will cause us and the rest of our people to die!”
11 Convocaron a todos los jefes de los filisteos y dijeron: ¡Envíen el Arca del ʼElohim de Israel y que vuelva a su propio lugar, para que no nos mate a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo! Porque hubo un pánico mortal en toda la ciudad, y la mano de ʼElohim se endureció allí.
The people were terrified/in panic because [they knew that] God was starting to punish them severely. So they summoned the [five] kings of the Philistia people-group again, and [pleaded with them], saying, “Take this sacred chest of the god of the Israelis back to its own place! If you do not do that quickly, we will all die!”
12 Los que no morían eran afectados con tumores, y el clamor de la ciudad subía al cielo.
Some of the people in Ekron had already died, and the rest of the people were suffering because of tumors on their skin. So they all cried out to their gods [MTY] [to help them].
