1 Samuel 4
1 La palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel. Entonces Israel salió a enfrentar a los filisteos en batalla y acampó junto a Ebenezer. Los filisteos acamparon en Afec y
Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped at Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.
2 se dispusieron en orden de batalla contra Israel. La batalla fue feroz, e Israel fue derrotado por los filisteos. Unos 4.000 hombres de sus filas fueron matados en el campo de batalla.
The Philistines arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
3 Cuando el pueblo regresó al campamento, los ancianos de Israel preguntaron: ¿Por qué Yavé nos hirió hoy ante los filisteos? Traigámonos de Silo el Arca del Pacto de Yavé para que Él esté entre nosotros y nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos.
When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 El pueblo envió [gente] a Silo, y llevaron de allí el Arca del Pacto de Yavé de las huestes, Quien mora entre los querubines. Estaban allí los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, con el Arca del Pacto de ʼElohim.
So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 Cuando el Arca del Pacto de Yavé llegó al campamento, todo Israel gritó con tan grande júbilo que la tierra resonó.
When the ark of the covenant of the LORD entered the camp, all the Israelites raised such a great shout that it shook the ground.
6 Cuando los filisteos oyeron el estruendo del júbilo dijeron: ¿Qué es este estruendo de gran clamor en el campamento de los hebreos? Y supieron que el Arca de Yavé llegó al campamento.
On hearing the noise of the shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
7 Los filisteos tuvieron temor y dijeron: ¡Los ʼelohim llegaron al campamento! Y decían: ¡Ay de nosotros, porque nunca antes sucedió tal cosa!
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
8 ¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos ʼelohim poderosos? ¡Éstos son los ʼelohim que golpearon a Egipto con toda plaga en el desierto!
Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
9 ¡Filisteos, esfuércense y [demuestren que] son hombres, para que no sean esclavos de los hebreos como ellos fueron de ustedes! ¡Sean hombres y combatan!
Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
10 Los filisteos combatieron, e Israel fue derrotado. Cada hombre huyó a su tienda, y hubo una gran matanza, porque cayeron de Israel 30.000 hombres de a pie.
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great—thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.
11 El Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada, y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, murieron.
The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
12 Aquel mismo día, cierto hombre de Benjamín corrió desde el campo de batalla hasta Silo, con ropas rasgadas y tierra sobre su cabeza.
That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to Shiloh, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head.
13 Cuando llegó, allí Elí estaba sentado en una silla. Vigilaba con afán junto al camino, porque su corazón temblaba a causa del Arca de ʼElohim. Cuando aquel hombre llegó a la ciudad para informar, toda la ciudad dio gritos.
When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city cried out.
14 Cuando Elí oyó el estruendo del griterío, dijo: ¿Qué significa todo ese alboroto? Y aquel hombre se apresuró, llegó e informó a Elí.
Eli heard the outcry and asked, “Why this commotion?” So the man hurried over and reported to Eli.
15 Elí tenía 98 años de edad y sus ojos estaban ya fijos, pues no podía ver.
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his gaze was fixed because he could not see.
16 Aquel hombre dijo a Elí: Yo vine de la batalla. Escapé. Y le preguntó: ¿Qué sucedió, hijo mío?
“I have just come from the battle,” the man said to Eli. “I fled from there today.” “What happened, my son?” Eli asked.
17 El mensajero respondió: Israel huyó de los filisteos, y hubo también una gran matanza entre el pueblo. También tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, murieron, y el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada.
The messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
18 Cuando mencionó el Arca de ʼElohim, aconteció que cayó de su silla hacia atrás, junto a la puerta. Se le quebró la nuca y murió, porque era hombre anciano y pesado. Él juzgó a Israel 40 años.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned, Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And Eli had judged Israel forty years.
19 Su nuera, la esposa de Finees, que estaba embarazada y cercana al parto, al escuchar la noticia de que el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada y que su suegro y su esposo murieron, se agachó, pues le llegaron los dolores y dio a luz.
Now Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
20 En el momento cuando moría, las que estaban junto a ella decían: No temas, porque diste a luz un hijo. Pero ella no respondió ni prestó atención.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not respond or pay any heed.
21 Y llamó al niño Icabod y dijo: ¡Traspasada es la gloria de Israel, porque el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada! Su suegro y su esposo murieron.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
22 Y dijo: ¡La gloria de Israel es traspasada, porque el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada!
“The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “for the ark of God has been captured.”
