1 Los hijos de Israel hicieron lo que era malo a los ojos de Yahvé, por lo que Yahvé los entregó a la mano de Madián durante siete años.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

2 La mano de Madián prevaleció contra Israel, y a causa de Madián los hijos de Israel se hicieron las guaridas que hay en las montañas, las cuevas y las fortalezas.

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made for themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

3 Y cuando Israel hubo sembrado, subieron contra ellos los madianitas, los amalecitas y los hijos del oriente.

And so it was, when Israel had sown, that Midian, Amalek, and the Kedemites would come up against them.

4 Acamparon contra ellos y destruyeron el producto de la tierra, hasta llegar a Gaza. No dejaron sustento en Israel, ni ovejas, ni bueyes, ni asnos.

And they camped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, as far as Gaza, and they left no sustenance in Israel, as well as sheep, or ox, or donkey.

5 Porque subieron con su ganado y sus tiendas. Entraron como langostas por la multitud. Tanto ellos como sus camellos eran innumerables; y entraron en la tierra para destruirla.

For they came up with their livestock and their tents and their camels. They would come in like locusts in number, and they were innumerable. And they came into the land to ravage it.

6 Israel quedó muy abatido a causa de Madián, y los hijos de Israel clamaron a Yahvé.

Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to the LORD.

7 Cuando los hijos de Israel clamaron a Yahvé a causa de Madián,

It happened, when the children of Israel cried to the LORD because of Midian,

8 Yahvé envió un profeta a los hijos de Israel, y les dijo: “Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, dice: ‘Yo os hice subir de Egipto y os saqué de la casa de servidumbre.

that the LORD sent a prophet to the children of Israel, and he said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

9 Os libré de la mano de los egipcios y de la mano de todos los que os oprimían, y los eché de delante de vosotros, y os di su tierra.

and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

10 Yo te dije: “Yo soy Yahvé, tu Dios. No temerás a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra habitas”. Pero no habéis escuchado mi voz”.

and I said to you, "I am the LORD your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell." But you have not listened to my voice.'"

11 El ángel del Señor vino y se sentó bajo la encina que estaba en Ofra, que pertenecía a Joás el abiezerita. Su hijo Gedeón estaba batiendo trigo en el lagar, para ocultarlo de los madianitas.

The angel of the LORD came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 El ángel de Yahvé se le apareció y le dijo: “¡Yahvé está contigo, valiente!”

The angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."

13 Gedeón le dijo: “Oh, señor mío, si Yahvé está con nosotros, ¿por qué entonces nos ha sucedido todo esto? ¿Dónde están todas sus maravillas, de las que nos hablaron nuestros padres, diciendo: ‘No nos sacó Yahvé de Egipto’? Pero ahora el Señor nos ha desechado y nos ha entregado en manos de Madián”.

Gideon said to him, "Oh, my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, 'Didn't the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian."

14 El Señor lo miró y le dijo: “Ve con esta tu fuerza y salva a Israel de la mano de Madián. ¿No te he enviado yo?”

The LORD looked at him, and said, "Go in this strength of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Look, haven't I sent you?"

15 Le dijo: “Señor, ¿cómo salvaré a Israel? He aquí que mi familia es la más pobre de Manasés, y yo soy el más pequeño en la casa de mi padre”.

He said to him, "O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Look, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house."

16 Yahvé le dijo: “Ciertamente, yo estaré contigo, y herirás a los madianitas como a un solo hombre”.

And the LORD said to him, "Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man."

17 Le dijo: “Si ahora he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, muéstrame una señal de que eres tú quien habla conmigo.

He said to him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.

18 Por favor, no te vayas hasta que venga a ti, y saque mi regalo y lo ponga delante de ti.” Dijo: “Esperaré hasta que vuelvas”.

Please do not go away, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you." He said, "I will wait until you come back."

19 Gedeón entró y preparó un cabrito y tortas sin levadura de un efa de harina. Puso la carne en un cesto y el caldo en una olla, y se lo llevó debajo de la encina, y lo presentó.

Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the meat he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.

20 El ángel de Dios le dijo: “Toma la carne y las tortas sin levadura, ponlas sobre esta roca y vierte el caldo”. Así lo hizo.

The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And he did so.

21 Entonces el ángel de Yahvé extendió la punta del bastón que tenía en la mano y tocó la carne y las tortas sin levadura; y subió fuego de la roca y consumió la carne y las tortas sin levadura. Entonces el ángel de Yahvé se alejó de su vista.

Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

22 Gedeón vio que era el ángel de Yahvé, y dijo: “¡Ay, Señor Yahvé! Porque he visto al ángel de Yahvé cara a cara”.

Gideon saw that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said, "Alas, Lord GOD. Because I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face."

23 El Señor le dijo: “¡La paz sea contigo! No tengas miedo. No morirás”.

The LORD said to him, "Peace be to you. Do not be afraid. You shall not die."

24 Entonces Gedeón construyó allí un altar a Yahvé, y lo llamó “Yahvé es la Paz”. Hasta el día de hoy sigue estando en Ofra de los abiezritas.

Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it "The LORD is Peace." To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

25 Esa misma noche, Yahvé le dijo: “Toma el toro de tu padre, el segundo toro de siete años, y derriba el altar de Baal que tiene tu padre, y corta la Asera que está junto a él.

It happened the same night, that the LORD said to him, "Take your father's bull, even the second bull seven years old, and tear down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it;

26 Luego construye un altar a Yahvé, tu Dios, en la cima de esta fortaleza, de manera ordenada, y toma el segundo toro, y ofrece un holocausto con la madera de la Asera que cortarás.”

and build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down."

27 Entonces Gedeón tomó a diez hombres de sus servidores e hizo lo que el Señor le había dicho. Como temía a la familia de su padre y a los hombres de la ciudad, no pudo hacerlo de día, sino que lo hizo de noche.

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had spoken to him: and it came about, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

28 Cuando los hombres de la ciudad se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí que el altar de Baal había sido derribado, y el Asera que estaba junto a él había sido cortado, y el segundo toro había sido ofrecido sobre el altar que había sido construido.

When the men of the city arose early in the morning, look, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.

29 Se dijeron unos a otros: “¿Quién ha hecho esto?” Cuando indagaron y preguntaron, dijeron: “Gedeón, hijo de Joás, ha hecho esto”.

And they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" When they inquired and asked, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing."

30 Entonces los hombres de la ciudad dijeron a Joás: “Saca a tu hijo para que muera, porque ha derribado el altar de Baal y porque ha cortado la Asera que estaba junto a él”.

Then the men of the city said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it."

31 Joás dijo a todos los que se oponían a él: “¿Pretendéis defender a Baal? ¿O lo salvaréis? El que se enfrente a él, que muera por la mañana. Si es un dios, que se defienda, porque alguien ha derribado su altar”.

Joash said to all who stood against him, "Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death while it is yet morning: if he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar."

32 Por eso ese día le puso el nombre de Jerub-Baal, diciendo: “Que Baal contienda por él, porque ha derribado su altar”.

Therefore on that day he named him Jerubbaal, saying, "Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar."

33 Entonces se reunieron todos los madianitas y amalecitas y los hijos del oriente, y pasaron y acamparon en el valle de Jezreel.

Then all Midian and Amalek and the Kedemites assembled themselves together; and they crossed over, and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.

34 Pero el Espíritu de Yahvé vino sobre Gedeón, y éste tocó la trompeta; y Abiezer se reunió para seguirlo.

But the Spirit of the LORD came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

35 Envió mensajeros a todo Manasés, y también se reunieron para seguirlo. Envió mensajeros a Aser, a Zabulón y a Neftalí, y éstos subieron a su encuentro.

He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36 Gedeón dijo a Dios: “Si salvas a Israel por mi mano, como has dicho,

Gideon said to God, "If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,

37 he aquí que pondré un vellón de lana sobre la era. Si sólo hay rocío en el vellón, y está seco en toda la tierra, entonces sabré que salvarás a Israel por mi mano, como has dicho.”

look, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken."

38 Así fue, pues al día siguiente se levantó temprano, apretó el vellón y escurrió el rocío del vellón, un recipiente lleno de agua.

It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

39 Gedeón le dijo a Dios: “No dejes que se encienda tu ira contra mí, y sólo hablaré esta vez. Por favor, déjame hacer una prueba sólo esta vez con el vellón. Que ahora esté seco sólo el vellón, y que en toda la tierra haya rocío”.

Gideon said to God, "Do not let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make one more test with the fleece; let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew."

40 Así lo hizo Dios aquella noche, pues sólo estaba seco el vellón, y había rocío en toda la tierra.

God did so that night, for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew all over the ground.
