Josué 9
1 Cuando todos los reyes que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, en la región montañosa y en la llanura, y en toda la orilla del gran mar frente al Líbano, el hitita, el amorreo, el cananeo, el ferezeo, el heveo y el jebuseo, se enteraron de ello
Now When these things were heard of, all the kings beyond the Jordan, that dwelt in the mountains and in the plains, in the places near the sea, and on the coasts of the great sea, they also that dwell by Libanus, the Hethite and the Amorrhite, the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite,
2 se reunieron para luchar con Josué y con Israel, de común acuerdo.
Gathered themselves together, to fight against Josue and Israel with one mind, and one resolution.
3 Pero cuando los habitantes de Gabaón se enteraron de lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hai,
But they that dwelt in Gabaon, hearing all that Josue had done to Jericho and Hai:
4 también recurrieron a un ardid, y fueron y se hicieron pasar por embajadores, y tomaron sacos viejos en sus asnos, y cueros de vino viejos, rotos y atados,
Cunningly devising took for themselves provisions, laying old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles rent and sewed up again,
5 y sandalias viejas y remendadas en sus pies, y llevaban vestidos viejos. Todo el pan de sus provisiones estaba seco y mohoso.
And very old shoes, which for a show of age were clouted with patches, and old garments upon them: the leaves also, which they carried for provisions by the way, were hard, and broken into pieces:
6 Se dirigieron a Josué en el campamento de Gilgal y le dijeron a él y a los hombres de Israel: “Hemos venido de un país lejano. Ahora, pues, haz un pacto con nosotros”.
And they went to Josue, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him, and to all Israel with him: We are come from a far country, desiring to make peace with you. And the children of Israel answered them, and said:
7 Los hombres de Israel dijeron a los heveos: “¿Y si vivís entre nosotros? ¿Cómo podríamos hacer un pacto con ustedes?”
Perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot; if so, we can make no league with you.
8 Dijeron a Josué: “Somos tus siervos”. Josué les dijo: “¿Quiénes sois? ¿De dónde venís?”
But they said to Josue: We are thy servants. Josue said to them: Who are you? and whence came you?
9 Le dijeron: “Tus siervos han venido de un país muy lejano por el nombre de Yahvé, tu Dios; porque hemos oído hablar de su fama, de todo lo que hizo en Egipto,
They answered: From a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the Lord thy God. For we have heard the fame of his power, all the things that he did in Egypt.
10 y de todo lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, a Sehón, rey de Hesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot.
And to the two kings of the Amorrhites that were beyond the Jordan, Sehon king of Hesebon, and Og king of Basan, that was in Astaroth:
11 Nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestro país nos hablaron diciendo: “Tomen en sus manos provisiones para el viaje y vayan a recibirlos. Díganles: “Somos sus siervos. Hagan un pacto con nosotros”.
And our ancients, and all the inhabitants of our country said to us: Take with you victuals for a long way, and go meet them, and say: We are your servants, make ye a league with us.
12 Este pan nuestro lo sacamos caliente para nuestras provisiones de nuestras casas el día que salimos para ir a ustedes; pero ahora, he aquí, está seco y se ha enmohecido.
Behold, these leaves we took hot, when we set out from our houses to come to you, now they are become dry, and broken in pieces, by being exceeding old.
13 Estos cueros de vino, que llenamos, eran nuevos; y he aquí que están rotos. Estos nuestros vestidos y nuestras sandalias se han envejecido a causa del larguísimo viaje”.
These bottles of wine when we filled them were new, now they are rent and burst. These garments we have on, and the shoes we have on our feet, by reason of the very long journey are worn out, and almost consumed.
14 Los hombres probaron sus provisiones y no pidieron consejo a la boca de Yahvé.
They took therefore of their victuals, and consulted not the mouth of the Lord.
15 Josué hizo las paces con ellos y pactó con ellos que los dejaría vivir. Los príncipes de la congregación les prestaron juramento.
And Josue made peace with them, and entering into a league promised that they should not be slain: the princes also of the multitude swore to them.
16 Al cabo de tres días después de haber hecho un pacto con ellos, se enteraron de que eran sus vecinos y que vivían entre ellos.
Now three days after the league was made, they heard that they dwelt nigh, and they should be among them.
17 Los hijos de Israel viajaron y llegaron a sus ciudades al tercer día. Sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Quefira, Beerot y Quiriat Jearim.
And the children of Israel removed the camp, and came into their cities on the third day, the names of which are Gabaon, and Caphira, and Beroth, and Cariathiarim.
18 Los hijos de Israel no los atacaron, porque los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Yahvé, el Dios de Israel. Toda la congregación murmuró contra los príncipes.
And they slew them not, because the princes of the multitude had sworn in the name of the Lord the God of Israel. Then all the common people murmured against the princes.
19 Pero todos los príncipes dijeron a toda la congregación: “Les hemos jurado por Yahvé, el Dios de Israel. Ahora, pues, no podemos tocarlos.
And they answered them: We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord the God of Israel, and therefore we may not touch them.
20 Haremos esto con ellos y los dejaremos vivir, para que no caiga sobre nosotros la ira por el juramento que les hicimos.”
But this we mill do to them: Let their lives be saved, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, if we should be forsworn.
21 Los príncipes les dijeron: “Déjenlos vivir”. Así que se convirtieron en cortadores de leña y sacadores de agua para toda la congregación, como los príncipes les habían dicho.
But so let them live, as to serve the whole multitude in hewing wood, and bringing in water. As they were speaking these things,
22 Josué los llamó y les habló diciendo: “¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo: ‘Estamos muy lejos de vosotros’, cuando vivís entre nosotros?
Josue called the Gabaonites and said to them: Why would you impose upon us, saying: We dwell far off from you, whereas you are in the midst of us?
23 Ahora, pues, estáis malditos, y algunos de vosotros no dejarán de ser esclavos, ni cortadores de leña ni sacadores de agua para la casa de mi Dios.”
Therefore you shall be under a curse, and your race shall always be hewers of wood, and carriers of water unto the house of my God.
24 Ellos respondieron a Josué y dijeron: “Porque ciertamente a tus siervos se les contó cómo Yahvé, tu Dios, le ordenó a su siervo Moisés que te diera toda la tierra, y que destruyera a todos los habitantes de la tierra de delante de ti. Por eso temimos mucho por nuestras vidas a causa de ustedes, y hemos hecho esto.
They answered: It was told us thy servants, that the Lord thy God had promised his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants thereof. Therefore we feared exceedingly and provided for our lives. compelled by the dread we had of you and we took this counsel.
25 Ahora, he aquí que estamos en tu mano. Haz con nosotros lo que te parezca bueno y correcto hacer”.
And now we are in thy hand: deal with us as it seemeth good and right unto thee.
26 Así lo hizo con ellos, y los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, para que no los mataran.
So Josue did as he had said, and delivered them from the hand of the children of Israel, that they should not be slain.
27 Aquel día Josué les hizo cortadores de madera y sacadores de agua para la congregación y para el altar de Yahvé hasta el día de hoy, en el lugar que él eligiera.
And he gave orders in that day that they should be in the service of all the people, and of the altar of the Lord, hewing wood and carrying water, until this present time, in the place which the Lord hath chosen.
