Josué 8
1 El Señor le dijo a Josué: “No temas ni te desanimes. Toma a todos los guerreros contigo, y levántate y sube a Hai. He aquí que he entregado en tu mano al rey de Hai, con su pueblo, su ciudad y su tierra.
The Lord said to Joshua, “Don't be afraid or downhearted! Take all the fighting men with you and attack Ai, for I'm handing over to you the king of Ai, his people, his town, and his land.
2 Haréis con Hai y con su rey lo mismo que hicisteis con Jericó y con su rey, salvo que tomaréis para vosotros sus bienes y su ganado. Poned una emboscada a la ciudad detrás de ella”.
You will do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho and its king. However, this time you may keep for yourselves the plunder and the livestock. Set up an ambush behind the town.”
3 Entonces Josué se levantó, con todos los guerreros, para subir a Hai. Josué escogió treinta mil hombres, los más valientes, y los envió de noche.
So Joshua and all the people got ready to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night.
4 Les ordenó, diciendo: “Mirad, os pondréis en emboscada contra la ciudad, detrás de la ciudad. No os alejéis mucho de la ciudad, pero estad todos preparados.
He ordered them, “You lie in ambush behind the town, not far away. All of you need to be ready.
5 Yo y todo el pueblo que está conmigo nos acercaremos a la ciudad. Sucederá que cuando salgan contra nosotros, como al principio, huiremos ante ellos.
When I and the rest of the men with me approach the town, the defenders will run out to attack us just like before, and we'll run away from them.
6 Saldrán tras nosotros hasta que los hayamos alejado de la ciudad; porque dirán: “Huyen ante nosotros, como la primera vez”. Así que huiremos delante de ellos,
They'll chase after us as we draw them away from the town, because they'll say to each other, ‘They're running away from us just like before.’
7 y tú te levantarás de la emboscada y tomarás posesión de la ciudad, porque el Señor, tu Dios, la entregará en tu mano.
While we're running away from them, you will get up from your ambush positions and take the town for the Lord God will hand it over to you.
8 Cuando hayáis tomado la ciudad, le prenderéis fuego. Harás esto según la palabra de Yahvé. He aquí que yo te lo he ordenado”.
Once you've captured the town, set it on fire, as the Lord has instructed. Now follow your orders.”
9 Josué los envió, y ellos fueron a preparar la emboscada, y se quedaron entre Betel y Hai, al oeste de Hai; pero Josué se quedó en medio del pueblo esa noche.
Joshua sent them out, and they went to lie in ambush between Bethel and the west side of Ai. But that night Joshua stayed with the people in the camp.
10 Josué se levantó de madrugada, reunió al pueblo y subió, él y los ancianos de Israel, delante del pueblo a Hai.
Early the next morning Joshua got up early and gathered the people and went up to attack Ai, accompanied by the elders of Israel.
11 Todo el pueblo, incluso los hombres de guerra que estaban con él, subieron y se acercaron, y llegaron ante la ciudad y acamparon en el lado norte de Hai. Había un valle entre él y Hai.
All the fighting men who were with him approached the front of the town, and camped there on the north side, with a valley between them and Ai.
12 Tomó unos cinco mil hombres y los puso en una emboscada entre Betel y Hai, del lado occidental de la ciudad.
He took about five thousand men and had them lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the town.
13 Así que puso a la gente, a todo el ejército que estaba al norte de la ciudad, y su emboscada al oeste de la ciudad; y Josué fue aquella noche al centro del valle.
So the army took up their positions—the main army to the north of the town, and the ambush to the west. Joshua went that night to the valley.
14 Cuando el rey de Hai lo vio, se apresuró y se levantó temprano, y los hombres de la ciudad salieron contra Israel para combatir, él y todo su pueblo, a la hora señalada, frente al Arabá; pero él no sabía que había una emboscada contra él detrás de la ciudad.
As soon as the king of Ai saw the situation, he and all his men rushed out early in the morning to attack the Israelites where they had before, at a place overlooking the Jordan valley. He didn't know about the ambush waiting on the other side of the town.
15 Josué y todo Israel hicieron como si fueran vencidos ante ellos, y huyeron por el camino del desierto.
Joshua and the Israelites allowed themselves to be driven back, and ran away in the direction of the wilderness.
16 Todo el pueblo que estaba en la ciudad fue convocado para perseguirlos. Persiguieron a Josué, y fueron alejados de la ciudad.
All the men of the town were called out to chase after them, and as they pursued Joshua they were drawn father from the town.
17 No quedó un solo hombre en Hai o en Betel que no saliera en pos de Israel. Dejaron la ciudad abierta y persiguieron a Israel.
There wasn't a man left in Ai and Bethel who didn't go out to chase the Israelites. They left the town wide open as they pursued the Israelites.
18 Yahvé dijo a Josué: “Extiende la jabalina que tienes en la mano hacia Hai, porque la entregaré en tu mano”. Josué extendió la jabalina que tenía en la mano hacia la ciudad.
Then the Lord told Joshua, “Hold up the spear in your hand and point it at Ai, because I'm giving it to you.” So Joshua held up the spear in his hand and pointed it at the town.
19 Los emboscados se levantaron rápidamente de su lugar, y corrieron tan pronto como él extendió su mano y entraron en la ciudad y la tomaron. Se apresuraron y prendieron fuego a la ciudad.
As soon as they saw this signal the men lying in ambush got up and rushed into the town. They captured it, and quickly set it on fire.
20 Cuando los hombres de Hai miraron a sus espaldas, vieron que el humo de la ciudad subía hasta el cielo, y no tuvieron fuerzas para huir por un lado o por otro. El pueblo que huyó al desierto se volvió contra los perseguidores.
When the men of Ai looked back they saw the smoke rising up into the sky from the town. They had nowhere to run to, because the Israelites who had been running away towards the wilderness now turned on their pursuers.
21 Cuando Josué y todo Israel vieron que la emboscada había tomado la ciudad y que el humo de la ciudad ascendía, se volvieron y mataron a los hombres de Hai.
For when Joshua and the Israelites saw that the ambush group had captured the town, and that smoke was rising from it, they turned around and attacked the men of Ai.
22 Los demás salieron de la ciudad contra ellos, de modo que se pusieron en medio de Israel, unos de un lado y otros de otro. Los atacaron, de modo que no dejaron que ninguno de ellos permaneciera ni escapara.
The men from the ambush also came from the town and attacked them, so they were caught on the middle, with the Israelites on both sides. The Israelites cut them down—not a single man survived or got away.
23 Capturaron vivo al rey de Hai y lo llevaron a Josué.
Only the king of Ai was captured alive, and he was brought before Joshua.
24 Cuando Israel terminó de matar a todos los habitantes de Hai en el campo, en el desierto donde los perseguían, y todos cayeron a filo de espada hasta ser consumidos, todo Israel volvió a Hai y la hirió a filo de espada.
When the Israelites had finished killing the men of Ai who had chased them towards the wilderness—once they had all been cut down by the sword—the whole Israelite army returned to the town and killed everyone living there.
25 Todos los que cayeron aquel día, tanto hombres como mujeres, fueron doce mil, todo el pueblo de Hai.
Those who were killed that day numbered twelve thousand, men and women—all the inhabitants of Ai.
26 Porque Josué no retiró su mano, con la que extendía la jabalina, hasta que hubo destruido por completo a todos los habitantes de Hai.
For Joshua had continued to hold up his spear until all the people of Ai had been destroyed.
27 Israel sólo tomó para sí el ganado y los bienes de esa ciudad, según la palabra de Yahvé que le había ordenado a Josué.
Only the livestock and plunder were taken from the town by the Israelites, as the Lord had instructed Joshua.
28 Entonces Josué quemó a Hai y la convirtió en un montón para siempre, en una desolación, hasta el día de hoy.
So Joshua burned the town of Ai, making it permanently into a heap of ruins where no one lives to this very day.
29 Colgó al rey de Hai en un árbol hasta el atardecer. Al anochecer, Josué lo ordenó, y bajaron su cuerpo del árbol y lo arrojaron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras que permanece hasta el día de hoy.
He killed the king of Ai and hung his body on a tree until evening. When the sun went down Joshua ordered the body taken down. They threw it down in front of the entrance to the town gate and piled a heap of rocks over it which is still there today.
30 Entonces Josué edificó un altar a Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, en el monte Ebal,
Then Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal for the Lord, the God of Israel.
31 tal como Moisés, siervo de Yahvé, lo había ordenado a los hijos de Israel, como está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés: un altar de piedras sin cortar, en el que nadie había levantado hierro. Sobre él ofrecían holocaustos a Yahvé y sacrificaban ofrendas de paz.
He did what Moses, the servant of the Lord, had told the Israelites to do, as recorded in the book of the Law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones which no one has worked with iron tools. On the altar they made burnt offerings and friendship offerings to the Lord.
32 Allí escribió en las piedras una copia de la ley de Moisés, que escribió en presencia de los hijos de Israel.
There in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua inscribed on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses.
33 Todo Israel, con sus ancianos, oficiales y jueces, se puso de pie a ambos lados del arca, delante de los sacerdotes levitas que llevaban el arca de la alianza de Yahvé, tanto los extranjeros como los nativos; la mitad de ellos frente al monte Gerizim, y la otra mitad frente al monte Ebal, tal como Moisés, siervo de Yahvé, lo había ordenado al principio, para que bendijesen al pueblo de Israel.
All the Israelites, the elders, the officers, and the judges stood in two groups facing each other with the priests, the Levites, and the Ark of the Lord's Agreement between them. (Included were the foreigners as well as the native born.) Half of them stood in front of Mount Gerizim, and half in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses had ordered, for the blessing of the people this first time.
34 Después leyó todas las palabras de la ley, la bendición y la maldición, según todo lo que está escrito en el libro de la ley.
Then Joshua read out the whole Law—all the blessings and curses recorded in the book of the Law.
35 No hubo palabra de todo lo que Moisés mandó que Josué no leyera ante toda la asamblea de Israel, con las mujeres, los niños y los extranjeros que estaban entre ellos.
Joshua read out every word of Moses' instruction to the whole Israelite assembly, including the women, the children, and the foreigners who lived among them.
