Job 38
1 Entonces Yahvé respondió a Job desde el torbellino,
And after Elius had ceased from speaking, the Lord spoke to Job through the whirlwind and clouds, [saying],
2 “¿Quién es el que oscurece el consejo por palabras sin conocimiento?
Who is this that hides counsel from me, and confines words in [his] heart, and thinks to conceal [them] from me?
3 Prepárate como un hombre, porque yo te interrogaré y tú me responderás.
Gird your loins like a man; and I will ask you, and do you answer me.
4 “¿Dónde estabas cuando puse los cimientos de la tierra? Declara, si tienes entendimiento.
Where was you when I founded the earth? tell me now, if you have knowledge,
5 ¿Quién determinó sus medidas, si lo sabe? ¿O quién estiró la línea en él?
who set the measures of it, if you know? or who stretched a line upon it?
6 ¿Sobre qué estaban fijados sus cimientos? O quién puso su piedra angular,
On what are its rings fastened? and who is he that laid the corner-stone upon it?
7 cuando las estrellas de la mañana cantaban juntas, y todos los hijos de Dios gritaron de alegría?
When the stars were made, all my angels praised me with a loud voice.
8 “O que cierra el mar con puertas, cuando salió del vientre materno,
And I shut up the sea with gates, when it rushed out, coming forth out its mother's womb.
9 cuando hice de las nubes su vestimenta, y lo envolvió en una espesa oscuridad,
And I made a cloud its clothing, and swathed it in mist.
10 marcadas para ello mi límite, poner barras y puertas,
And I set bounds to it, surrounding it with bars and gates.
11 y dijo: “Puedes venir aquí, pero no más allá. ¿Tus orgullosas olas serán detenidas aquí?
And I said to it, Hitherto shall you come, but you shall not go beyond, but your waves shall be confined within you.
12 “¿Has ordenado la mañana en tus días, y ha hecho que el amanecer conozca su lugar,
Or did I order the morning light in your time; and [did] the morning star [then first] see his appointed place;
13 para que se apodere de los confines de la tierra, y sacudir a los malvados fuera de ella?
to lay hold of the extremities of the earth, to cast out the ungodly out of it?
14 Se cambia como la arcilla bajo el sello, y presentado como una prenda de vestir.
Or did you take clay of the ground, and form a living creature, and set it with the power of speech upon the earth?
15 A los malvados se les oculta la luz. El brazo alto está roto.
And have you removed light from the ungodly, and crushed the arm of the proud?
16 “¿Has entrado en los manantiales del mar? ¿O has caminado por los recovecos de las profundidades?
Or have you gone to the source of the sea, and walked in the tracks of the deep?
17 ¿Se te han revelado las puertas de la muerte? ¿O has visto las puertas de la sombra de la muerte?
And do the gates of death open to you for fear; and did the porters of hell quake when they saw you? (questioned)
18 ¿Has comprendido la tierra en su anchura? Declara, si lo sabes todo.
And have you been instructed in the breadth of the [whole earth] under heaven? tell me now, what is the extent of it?
19 “¿Cuál es el camino hacia la morada de la luz? En cuanto a la oscuridad, cuál es su lugar,
And in what kind of a land does the light dwell? and of what kind is the place of darkness?
20 que lo lleves a su límite, para que discierna los caminos de su casa?
If you could bring me to their [utmost] boundaries, and if also you know their paths;
21 Seguramente lo sabes, pues naciste entonces, ¡y el número de sus días es genial!
I know then that you were born at that time, and the number of your years is great.
22 ¿Has entrado en los almacenes de la nieve, o has visto los almacenes del granizo,
But have you gone to the treasures of snow? and have you seen the treasures of hail?
23 que he reservado para el tiempo de la angustia, contra el día de la batalla y la guerra?
And is there a store [of them], for you against the time of [your] enemies, for the day of wars and battle?
24 De qué manera se distribuye el rayo, o el viento del este disperso en la tierra?
And whence proceeds the frost? or [whence] is the south wind dispersed over the [whole world] under heaven?
25 Que ha cortado un canal para el agua de la inundación, o la trayectoria de la tormenta,
And who prepared a course for the violent rain, and a way for the thunders;
26 para hacer llover en una tierra donde no hay hombre, en el desierto, en el que no hay hombre,
to rain upon the land where [there is] no man, the wilderness, where there is not a man in it; so as to feed the untrodden and uninhabited [land],
27 para saciar el terreno baldío y desolado, para hacer crecer la hierba tierna?
and cause it to send forth a crop of green herbs?
28 ¿La lluvia tiene padre? ¿O quién recoge las gotas de rocío?
Who is the rain's father? and who has generated the drops of dew?
29 ¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? ¿Quién ha dado a luz a la escarcha gris del cielo?
And out of whose womb comes the ice? and who has produced the frost in the sky,
30 Las aguas se vuelven duras como la piedra, cuando la superficie de las profundidades está congelada.
which descends like flowing water? who has terrified the face of the ungodly?
31 “¿Puedes atar el cúmulo de las Pléyades, o aflojar las cuerdas de Orión?
And do you understand the band of Pleias, and have you opened the barrier of Orion?
32 ¿Puedes guiar a las constelaciones en su estación? ¿O puedes guiar a la Osa con sus cachorros?
Or will you reveal Mazuroth in his season, and the evening star with his rays? Will you guide them?
33 ¿Conoces las leyes de los cielos? ¿Puede establecer su dominio sobre la tierra?
And know you the changes of heaven, or the events which take place together under heaven?
34 “¿Puedes elevar tu voz a las nubes, para que la abundancia de aguas te cubra?
And will you call a cloud with your voice, and will it obey you with a violent shower of much rain?
35 ¿Puedes enviar relámpagos para que se vayan? ¿Te informan de que “aquí estamos”?
And will you send lightnings, and they shall go? and shall they say to you, What is [your pleasure]?
36 ¿Quién ha puesto la sabiduría en las partes interiores? ¿O quién ha dado entendimiento a la mente?
And who has given to women skill in weaving, or knowledge of embroidery?
37 ¿Quién puede contar las nubes con sabiduría? O que puede verter los contenedores del cielo,
And who is he that numbers the clouds in wisdom, and has bowed the heaven [down] to the earth?
38 cuando el polvo se convierte en una masa, y los terrones se pegan?
For it is spread out as dusty earth, and I have cemented it as one hewn stone to another.
39 “¿Puedes cazar la presa para la leona, o satisfacer el apetito de los jóvenes leones,
And will you hunt a prey for the lions? and satisfy the desires of the serpents?
40 cuando se agazapan en sus guaridas, y acechar en la espesura?
For they fear in their lairs, and lying in wait couch in the woods.
41 Que proporciona al cuervo su presa, cuando sus jóvenes claman a Dios, y vagan por falta de comida?
And who has prepared food for the raven? for its young ones wander and cry to the Lord, in search of food.
