Jeremías 5

1 “Corran de un lado a otro por las calles de Jerusalén, y vean ahora, y sepan, y busquen en sus amplios lugares, si pueden encontrar a un hombre, si hay alguien que actúe con justicia, que busque la verdad, entonces la perdonaré.

Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that doeth justly, that seeketh truth; and I will pardon her.

2 Aunque digan: “Vive Yahvé”, ciertamente juran en falso”.

And though they say, As Jehovah liveth; surely they swear falsely.

3 Oh Yahvé, ¿no miran tus ojos la verdad? Los has golpeado, pero no se han afligido. Los has consumido, pero se han negado a recibir la corrección. Han endurecido sus rostros más que una roca. Se han negado a regresar.

O Jehovah, do not thine eyes look upon truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

4 Entonces dije: “Ciertamente estos son pobres. Son necios, pues no conocen el camino de Yahvé, ni la ley de su Dios.

Then I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish; for they know not the way of Jehovah, nor the law of their God:

5 Iré a los grandes y les hablaré, porque ellos conocen el camino de Yahvé y la ley de su Dios.” Pero éstos, de común acuerdo, han roto el yugo, y han roto las ataduras.

I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they know the way of Jehovah, and the law of their God. But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.

6 Por eso un león del bosque los matará. Un lobo de las tardes los destruirá. Un leopardo vigilará sus ciudades. Todo el que salga de allí será despedazado, porque sus transgresiones son muchas y su reincidencia ha aumentado.

Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the evenings shall destroy them, a leopard shall watch against their cities; every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces; because their transgressions are many, [and] their backslidings are increased.

7 “¿Cómo puedo perdonarte? Tus hijos me han abandonado y han jurado por lo que no son dioses. Cuando los había alimentado hasta la saciedad, cometieron adulterio y se reunieron en tropas en las casas de las prostitutas.

How can I pardon thee? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods. When I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the harlots’ houses;

8 Eran como caballos alimentados que andaban sueltos. Cada uno relinchaba tras la mujer de su vecino.

they were as fed horses roaming at large; every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

9 ¿No debería yo castigarlos por estas cosas?” dice el Señor. “¿No debería mi alma vengarse de una nación como ésta?

Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

10 “Sube a sus muros y destruye, pero no acabes del todo. Quita sus ramas, porque no son del Señor.

Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her branches; for they are not Jehovah’s.

11 Porque la casa de Israel y la casa de Judá han actuado con mucha traición contra mí, dice el Señor.

For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith Jehovah.

12 Han negado a Yahvé y han dicho: “No es él. El mal no vendrá sobre nosotros. No veremos espada ni hambre.

They have denied Jehovah, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

13 Los profetas se convertirán en viento, y la palabra no está en ellos. Así se hará con ellos”.

and the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

14 Por eso Yahvé, el Dios de los Ejércitos, dice: “Por cuanto hablas esta palabra, he aquí que yo haré que mis palabras en tu boca sean fuego, y que este pueblo sea leña, y que lo devore.

Wherefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

15 He aquí que yo traigo sobre ti una nación de lejos, casa de Israel”, dice Yahvé. “Es una nación poderosa. Es una nación antigua, una nación cuya lengua no conoces y no entiendes lo que dice.

Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

16 Su aljaba es una tumba abierta. Todos ellos son hombres poderosos.

Their quiver is an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

17 Se comerán tu cosecha y tu pan, que deberían comer tus hijos y tus hijas. Comerán tus rebaños y tus manadas. Se comerán tus vides y tus higueras. Derribarán a espada tus ciudades fortificadas en las que confías.

And they shall eat up thy harvest, and thy bread, [which] thy sons and thy daughters should eat; they shall eat up thy flocks and thy herds; they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig-trees; they shall beat down thy fortified cities, wherein thou trustest, with the sword.

18 “Pero aun en esos días — dice el Señor — no acabaré con ustedes.

But even in those days, saith Jehovah, I will not make a full end with you.

19 Sucederá cuando ustedes digan: ‘¿Por qué el Señor, nuestro Dios, nos ha hecho todas estas cosas? Entonces les diréis: ‘Así como me habéis abandonado y habéis servido a dioses extranjeros en vuestra tierra, así serviréis a extraños en una tierra que no es la vuestra.’

And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore hath Jehovah our God done all these things unto us? then shalt thou say unto them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served foreign gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

20 “Anuncia esto en la casa de Jacob, y publícalo en Judá, diciendo:

Declare ye this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,

21 ‘Oíd ahora esto, pueblo necio y sin entendimiento, que tenéis ojos y no veis, que tenéis oídos y no oís:

Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; that have eyes, and see not; that have ears, and hear not:

22 ¿No me teméis?’, dice el Señor; ‘¿No tembláis ante mi presencia, que he puesto la arena como límite del mar por decreto perpetuo, para que no pueda pasarlo? Aunque sus olas se agiten, no pueden prevalecer. Aunque rugan, no pueden pasar por encima’.

Fear ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it.

23 “Pero este pueblo tiene un corazón revuelto y rebelde. Se han rebelado y se han ido.

But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

24 No dicen en su corazón: ‘Temamos ahora a Yahvé, nuestro Dios, que da la lluvia, tanto la primera como la segunda, a su tiempo, que nos preserva las semanas señaladas de la cosecha’.

Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; that preserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

25 “Vuestras iniquidades han desviado estas cosas, y vuestros pecados os han negado el bien.

Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good from you.

26 Porque en mi pueblo se encuentran hombres malvados. Acechan, como los cazadores al acecho. Ponen una trampa. Atrapan a los hombres.

For among my people are found wicked men: they watch, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men.

27 Como una jaula llena de pájaros, así están sus casas llenas de engaños. Por eso se han engrandecido y se han enriquecido.

As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxed rich.

28 Han engordado. Brillan; sí, sobresalen en obras de maldad. No defienden la causa, la causa de los huérfanos, para prosperar; y no defienden los derechos de los necesitados.

They are waxed fat, they shine: yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

29 “¿No debería yo castigar por estas cosas?” dice Yahvé. “¿No debería mi alma vengarse de una nación como ésta?

Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

30 “Una cosa asombrosa y horrible ha sucedido en la tierra.

A wonderful and horrible thing is come to pass in the land:

31 Los profetas profetizan en falso, y los sacerdotes gobiernan con su propia autoridad; y a mi pueblo le gusta que sea así. ¿Qué harás al final de todo esto?

the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
