Jeremías 18

1 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte de Yahvé, diciendo:

The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,

2 “Levántate y baja a la casa del alfarero, y allí te haré escuchar mis palabras.”

“Arise and go out to the potter's house, for I will have you hear my word there.”

3 Entonces bajé a la casa del alfarero, y he aquí que estaba haciendo algo en las ruedas.

So I went out to the potter's house, and behold! The potter was working on the potter's wheel.

4 Cuando la vasija que había hecho de barro se estropeó en la mano del alfarero, éste volvió a hacer otra vasija, según le pareció al alfarero hacerla.

But the object of clay that he was molding was ruined in his hand, so he changed his mind and made another object that seemed good in his eyes to do.

5 Entonces vino a mí la palabra de Yahvé, diciendo:

Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

6 “Casa de Israel, ¿no puedo hacer con vosotros como este alfarero?”, dice Yahvé. “He aquí que como el barro en la mano del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mi mano, casa de Israel.

“Should I not be able to act like this potter with you, house of Israel?—this is Yahweh's declaration. Behold! Like clay in a potter's hand—that is how you are in my hand, house of Israel.

7 En el momento en que yo hable de una nación y de un reino para arrancarlo, derribarlo y destruirlo,

At one moment, I may proclaim something about a nation or a kingdom, that I will drive it out, tear it down, or destroy it.

8 si esa nación, de la que he hablado, se convierte de su maldad, me arrepentiré del mal que pensaba hacerles.

But if the nation about which I have made that proclamation turns from its evil, then I will relent from the disaster that I was planning to bring upon it.

9 En el momento en que hable sobre una nación y sobre un reino para construirlo y plantarlo,

At another moment, I may proclaim something about a nation or a kingdom, that I will build it up or plant it.

10 si hacen lo que es malo a mis ojos, que no obedecen mi voz, entonces me arrepentiré del bien con el que dije que los beneficiaría.

But if it does evil in my eyes by not listening to my voice, then I will stop the good that I had said I would do for them.

11 “Ahora, pues, hablen a los hombres de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén, diciendo: “El Señor dice: “He aquí que yo trazo el mal contra ustedes, y que concibo un plan contra ustedes. Vuélvanse ahora todos de su mal camino, y enmienden sus caminos y sus obras”.

So now, speak to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and say, 'Yahweh says this: See, I am about to form disaster against you. I am about to devise a plan against you. Repent, each person from his wicked way, so your ways and your practices will bring good to you.'

12 Pero ellos dicen: ‘Es en vano, porque caminaremos según nuestros propios planes, y cada uno seguirá la terquedad de su malvado corazón’.”

But they will say, 'This is no use. We will act according to our own plans. Each one of us will do what his evil, stubborn heart desires.'

13 Por eso dice Yahvé: “Pregunta ahora entre las naciones, “¿Quién ha oído esas cosas? La virgen de Israel ha hecho algo muy horrible.

Therefore Yahweh says this, 'Ask the nations, who has ever heard of such a thing as this? The virgin Israel has committed a horrible act.

14 ¿Fallará la nieve del Líbano de la roca del campo? ¿Se secarán las aguas frías que bajan de lejos?

Does the snow in Lebanon ever leave the rocky hills on its sides? Are the mountain streams coming from far away ever destroyed, those cold streams?

15 Porque mi pueblo me ha olvidado. Han quemado incienso a dioses falsos. Se les ha hecho tropezar en sus caminos en los antiguos caminos, para caminar por los senderos, por un camino no construido,

Yet my people have forgotten me. They have made offerings to useless idols and been made to stumble in their paths; they have left the ancient paths to walk lesser paths.

16 para hacer de su tierra un asombro, y un silbido perpetuo. Todos los que pasen por allí se quedarán asombrados, y sacudir la cabeza.

Their land will become a horror, an object of everlasting hissing. Everyone who passes by her will shudder and shake his head.

17 Los dispersaré como con un viento del este ante el enemigo. Les mostraré la espalda, y no la cara, en el día de su calamidad.

I will scatter them before their enemies like an eastern wind. I will show them my back, and not my face, on the day of their disaster.'”

18 Entonces dijeron: “¡Vengan! Ideemos planes contra Jeremías; porque la ley no perecerá del sacerdote, ni el consejo del sabio, ni la palabra del profeta. Venid, y golpeémosle con la lengua, y no prestemos atención a ninguna de sus palabras”.

So the people said, “Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, since the law will never perish from the priests, or advice from the wise men, or words from the prophets. Come, let us attack him with our words and no longer pay attention to anything he proclaims.”

19 Escúchame, Yahvé, y escucha la voz de los que contienden conmigo.

Pay attention to me, Yahweh, and listen to the voice of my enemies.

20 ¿Hay que recompensar el mal por el bien? Porque han cavado una fosa para mi alma. Recuerda cómo me presenté ante ti para hablar bien de ellos, para alejar de ellos tu ira.

Will disaster from them really be my reward for being good to them? For they have dug a pit for me. Remember how I stood before you to speak for their welfare, to cause your fury to turn away from them.

21 Por lo tanto, entreguen a sus hijos al hambre, y entregarlos al poder de la espada. Que sus esposas se queden sin hijos y viudas. Que sus hombres sean asesinados y sus jóvenes heridos por la espada en la batalla.

Therefore give their children over to famine, and give them to the hands of those who use the sword. So let their women become bereaved and widows, and their men be killed, and their young men killed by the sword in battle.

22 Que se oiga un grito desde sus casas cuando traes una tropa de repente sobre ellos; porque han cavado una fosa para llevarme y trampas ocultas para mis pies.

Let a distressed shout be heard from their houses, as you suddenly bring raiders against them. For they have dug a pit to capture me and have hidden traps for my feet.

23 Sin embargo, Yahvé, tú conoces todo su consejo contra mí para matarme. No perdones su iniquidad. No borres su pecado de tu vista, Que sean derribados ante ti. Trata con ellos en el momento de tu ira.

But you, Yahweh, you know all of their plans against me to kill me. Do not forgive their iniquities and sins. Do not wipe their sins away from you. Instead, let them be overthrown before you. Act against them in the time of your wrath.
