Isaías 36

1 En el año catorce del rey Ezequías, Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, atacó todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá y las capturó.

And it comes to pass, in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Asshur has come up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and seizes them.

2 El rey de Asiria envió a Rabsaces desde Laquis a Jerusalén al rey Ezequías con un gran ejército. Se paró junto al acueducto del estanque superior en la carretera del campo del batán.

And the king of Asshur sends Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, to King Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he stands by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller’s field,

3 Entonces salieron hacia él Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, que estaba al frente de la casa, y Sebna, el escriba, y Joah, hijo de Asaf, el registrador.

and Eliakim son of Hilkiah goes forth to him, who [is] over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.

4 Rabsaces les dijo: “Ahora dile a Ezequías: “El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice: “¿Qué confianza es ésta en la que confías?

And Rabshakeh says to them, “Now say to Hezekiah, Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur: What [is] this confidence in which you have confided?

5 Yo digo que tu consejo y tu fuerza para la guerra son sólo palabras vanas. ¿En quién confías ahora que te has rebelado contra mí?

I have said, Only a word of the lips! Counsel and might [are] for battle. Now, on whom have you trusted, that you have rebelled against me?

6 He aquí que tú confías en el bastón de esta caña cascada, en Egipto, que si un hombre se apoya en él, se le mete en la mano y lo atraviesa. Así es el Faraón, rey de Egipto, para todos los que confían en él.

Behold, you have trusted on the staff of this broken reed—on Egypt—which a man leans on, and it has gone into his hand, and pierced it—so [is] Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.

7 Pero si me dicen: ‘Confiamos en Yahvé, nuestro Dios’, ¿no es aquel cuyos lugares altos y cuyos altares ha quitado Ezequías, y ha dicho a Judá y a Jerusalén: ‘Ante este altar adoraréis’?”

And do you say to me, We have trusted in our God YHWH? Is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has turned aside, and says to Judah and to Jerusalem, Bow yourselves before this altar?

8 Ahora, pues, hazle una promesa a mi amo el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si eres capaz de poner jinetes en ellos.

And now, please negotiate with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give two thousand horses to you, if you are able to put riders on them for yourself.

9 ¿Cómo, pues, puedes rechazar el rostro de un capitán del más pequeño de los siervos de mi amo, y poner tu confianza en Egipto para carros y jinetes?

And how do you turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and trust on Egypt for yourself, for chariot and for horsemen?

10 ¿Acaso he subido ahora sin Yahvé contra esta tierra para destruirla? Yahvé me dijo: “Sube contra esta tierra y destrúyela””.

And now, without YHWH have I come up against this land to destroy it? YHWH said to me, Go up to this land, and you have destroyed it.”

11 Entonces Eliaquim, Sebna y Joa dijeron a Rabsaces: “Por favor, habla a tus siervos en arameo, porque lo entendemos. No nos hables en la lengua de los judíos a oídos del pueblo que está en el muro”.

And Eliakim says—and Shebna and Joah—to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants [in] Aramaic, for we are understanding; and do not speak to us [in] Jewish, in the ears of the people who [are] on the wall.”

12 Pero Rabsaces dijo: “¿Acaso mi amo me ha enviado sólo a tu amo y a ti para decir estas palabras, y no a los hombres que se sientan en el muro, que comerán su propio estiércol y beberán su propia orina contigo?”

And Rabshakeh says, “To your lord, and to you, has my lord sent me to speak these words? Is it not for the men—those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?”

13 Entonces Rabsaces se puso de pie y gritó en voz alta en el idioma de los judíos y dijo: “¡Oigan las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria!

And Rabshakeh stands and calls with a great voice [in] Jewish, and says, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Asshur—

14 El rey dice: ‘No se dejen engañar por Ezequías, porque no podrá liberarlos.

thus said the king: Do not let Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;

15 No dejes que Ezequías te haga confiar en Yahvé, diciendo: “Yahvé seguramente nos librará. Esta ciudad no será entregada a la mano del rey de Asiria”.

and do not let Hezekiah make you trust to YHWH, saying, YHWH certainly delivers us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.

16 No escuchen a Ezequías, porque el rey de Asiria dice: “Hagan las paces conmigo y salgan a mi encuentro; y cada uno de ustedes coma de su vid, y cada uno de su higuera, y cada uno de ustedes beba las aguas de su cisterna;

Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur: Make a blessing with me, and come out to me, and each of you eat of his vine, and each of his fig tree, and each drink the waters of his own well,

17 hasta que yo venga y los lleve a una tierra como la suya, una tierra de grano y de vino nuevo, una tierra de pan y de viñedos.

until my coming in, and I have taken you to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;

18 Cuídense de que Ezequías no los persuada diciendo: “Yahvé nos librará”. ¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las naciones ha librado sus tierras de la mano del rey de Asiria?

lest Hezekiah persuades you, saying, YHWH delivers us. Have the gods of the nations each delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?

19 ¿Dónde están los dioses de Hamat y de Arpad? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvaim? ¿Han librado a Samaria de mi mano?

Where [are] the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where [are] the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?

20 ¿Quiénes son, entre todos los dioses de estas naciones, los que han librado su país de mi mano, para que Yahvé libere a Jerusalén de mi mano?”

Who among all the gods of these lands [are] they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that YHWH delivers Jerusalem out of my hand?”

21 Pero ellos permanecieron en silencio y no dijeron nada en respuesta, porque la orden del rey era: “No le respondan”.

And they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, “Do not answer him.”

22 Entonces Eliaquim, hijo de Jilquías, que estaba al frente de la casa, y Sebna, el escriba, y Joah, hijo de Asaf, el registrador, vinieron a Ezequías con las ropas rasgadas y le contaron las palabras de Rabsaces.

And Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who [is] over the house, comes in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, to Hezekiah, with torn garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.
