Éxodo 5
1 Después vinieron Moisés y Aarón y le dijeron al Faraón: “Esto es lo que dice Yahvé, el Dios de Israel: ‘Deja ir a mi pueblo para que me celebre una fiesta en el desierto’”.
After this Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and told him, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says, ‘Let my people go so they can hold a religious festival for me in the desert.’”
2 El faraón dijo: “¿Quién es Yahvé, para que yo escuche su voz para dejar ir a Israel? No conozco a Yahvé, y además no dejaré ir a Israel”.
“Who is this ‘Lord’ that I should listen to his request to let Israel go?” Pharaoh replied. “I don't know the Lord and I certainly won't let Israel leave!”
3 Dijeron: “El Dios de los hebreos se ha reunido con nosotros. Por favor, vayamos tres días de camino al desierto y ofrezcamos sacrificios a Yahvé, nuestro Dios, no sea que caiga sobre nosotros la peste o la espada.”
“The God of the Hebrews came to us,” they added. “Please allow us to go a three days journey into the desert and offer sacrifices to the Lord our God. Otherwise he'll kill us by disease or by the sword.”
4 El rey de Egipto les dijo: “¿Por qué ustedes, Moisés y Aarón, sacan al pueblo de su trabajo? Volved a vuestras cargas”.
“Moses and Aaron, why are you trying to take people away from their assigned labor?” Pharaoh asked. “Get back to work!” he ordered.
5 El faraón dijo: “He aquí que el pueblo de la tierra es ahora numeroso, y ustedes lo hacen descansar de sus cargas”.
“Look here,” he went on. “There are many of your people here in our country and you are preventing them from doing their assigned labor.”
6 Ese mismo día el faraón ordenó a los capataces del pueblo y a sus oficiales, diciendo:
That very day he ordered the slave drivers and those in charge of the people:
7 “Ya no le daréis al pueblo paja para hacer ladrillos, como antes. Que vayan a recoger paja por sí mismos.
“Don't give them any more straw to make bricks like before. Have them go and collect the straw themselves.
8 Les exigiréis el número de ladrillos que antes hacían. No disminuirán nada de ella, porque son ociosos. Por eso claman diciendo: ‘Vamos a sacrificar a nuestro Dios’.
But still make them produce the same quantity of bricks as before. They're lazy people—that's why they're calling out, asking, ‘Please let us go and offer sacrifices to our god.
9 Deja que el trabajo más pesado recaiga sobre los hombres, para que trabajen en él. Que no presten atención a las palabras mentirosas”.
Make their work harder so they can get on with it and not pay any attention to all these lies!”
10 Los capataces del pueblo salieron con sus oficiales y hablaron al pueblo diciendo: “Esto es lo que dice el Faraón: ‘No les daré paja.
So the slave drivers and those in charge went out and told the people, “This is what Pharaoh has ordered: ‘I won't give you any more straw.
11 Vayan ustedes mismos, consigan paja donde puedan encontrarla, porque nada de su trabajo será disminuido’”.
Go and get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it, because your work quota won't be reduced.”
12 Así que el pueblo se dispersó por toda la tierra de Egipto para recoger rastrojos para hacer paja.
So the people went all over Egypt collecting stubble for straw.
13 Los capataces urgían diciendo: “¡Cumplan su cuota de trabajo diariamente, como cuando había paja!”
The slave drivers kept on forcing them, saying, “You still have to do the same work as you did when you had straw provided!”
14 Los oficiales de los hijos de Israel, que los capataces del faraón habían puesto sobre ellos, fueron golpeados y se les preguntó: “¿Por qué no habéis cumplido vuestra cuota tanto ayer como hoy, haciendo ladrillos como antes?”
They beat the Israelite supervisors they had put in charge, shouting at them, “Why haven't you met your quota of bricks as you did before?”
15 Entonces los oficiales de los hijos de Israel vinieron y gritaron al Faraón, diciendo: “¿Por qué tratas así a tus siervos?
The Israelite supervisors went to Pharaoh to complain, saying, “Why are you treating us your servants like this?
16 No se les da paja a tus siervos, y nos dicen: ‘¡Haz ladrillo!’ y he aquí que tus siervos son golpeados; pero la culpa es de tu propio pueblo.”
You don't give us any straw but your slave drivers demand that we make bricks, and they beat us! Your people are treating us badly!”
17 Pero el Faraón dijo: “¡Estás ocioso! ¡Estás ocioso! Por eso dices: ‘Vamos a sacrificar a Yahvé’.
“No, you're just lazy, lazy people!” Pharaoh replied. “That's why you keep on asking, ‘Please let us go and offer sacrifices to the Lord.’
18 ¡Vayan, pues, ahora y trabajen, porque no se les dará paja, pero entregarán el mismo número de ladrillos!”
Now get out of here and go back to work! You won't be given any straw but you'll still have to produce the full quota of bricks!”
19 Los oficiales de los hijos de Israel vieron que estaban en problemas cuando se les dijo: “¡No disminuirán nada de tu cuota diaria de ladrillos!”
The Israelite supervisors realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You must not reduce the daily production of bricks.”
20 Se encontraron con Moisés y Aarón, que estaban en el camino, cuando salían del Faraón.
They went over to Moses and Aaron who were waiting for them after their meeting with Pharaoh,
21 Les dijeron: “¡Que Yahvé los mire y los juzgue, porque ustedes nos han convertido en un hedor abominable a los ojos del Faraón y a los ojos de sus siervos, para poner una espada en su mano para matarnos!”
and said, “May the Lord see what you have done and judge you accordingly! You have made us like a bad smell to Pharaoh and his officials. You have put a sword in their hands to kill us!”
22 Moisés volvió a Yahvé y le dijo: “Señor, ¿por qué has traído problemas a este pueblo? ¿Por qué me has enviado?
Moses went back to the Lord and complained, “Why have you caused all this trouble for your own people, Lord? Was this why you sent me?
23 Porque desde que vine al Faraón a hablar en tu nombre, él ha traído problemas a este pueblo. No has rescatado a tu pueblo en absoluto”.
Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak for you, he has been even harder on your people, and you haven't done anything to save them!”
