Hechos 19
1 Mientras Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo, habiendo pasado por la zona alta, llegó a Éfeso y encontró a algunos discípulos.
Now it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus. And finding certain disciples
2 Les dijo: “¿Recibisteis el Espíritu Santo cuando creísteis?” Le dijeron: “No, ni siquiera hemos oído que exista el Espíritu Santo”.
he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “But we have not so much as heard that there is a Holy Spirit!”
3 Él dijo: “¿En qué fuisteis bautizados?” Dijeron: “En el bautismo de Juan”.
So he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John's baptism.”
4 Pablo dijo: “Juan, en efecto, bautizó con el bautismo del arrepentimiento, diciendo a la gente que debía creer en el que vendría después de él, es decir, en Cristo Jesús.”
So Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe into the One who would come after him, that is, into Jesus, the Christ.”
5 Al oír esto, se bautizaron en el nombre del Señor Jesús.
So upon hearing this they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 Cuando Pablo les impuso las manos, el Espíritu Santo vino sobre ellos y hablaron en otras lenguas y profetizaron.
And as Paul laid his hands on them the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they started speaking languages and prophesying.
7 Eran unos doce hombres en total.
There were about twelve men in all.
8 Entró en la sinagoga y habló con valentía durante tres meses, razonando y persuadiendo sobre las cosas relativas al Reino de Dios.
During three months Paul kept going to the synagogue and speaking boldly, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the Kingdom of God.
9 Pero como algunos estaban endurecidos y desobedientes, hablando mal del Camino ante la multitud, se apartó de ellos y separó a los discípulos, razonando cada día en la escuela de Tirano.
But when some became hardened and disobedient, maligning the Way before the crowd, he withdrew from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of a certain Tyrannus.
10 Esto continuó durante dos años, de modo que todos los que vivían en Asia oyeron la palabra del Señor Jesús, tanto judíos como griegos.
Now this continued for two years, so that all who lived in Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the Word of the Lord Jesus.
11 Dios obró milagros especiales por las manos de Pablo,
Further, God kept working unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,
12 de modo que hasta los pañuelos o delantales se llevaban de su cuerpo a los enfermos, y las enfermedades se iban de ellos, y los espíritus malignos salían.
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that he touched were applied to the sick, and the diseases left them and the wicked spirits went out from them.
13 Pero algunos de los judíos itinerantes, exorcistas, se encargaron de invocar sobre los que tenían los espíritus malignos el nombre del Señor Jesús, diciendo: “Os conjuramos por Jesús que Pablo predica.”
Well some among the itinerant Jewish exorcists attempted to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had wicked spirits saying, “We adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
14 Había siete hijos de un tal Esceva, jefe de los sacerdotes judíos, que hacían esto.
In fact there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who were doing this.
15 El espíritu maligno respondió: “A Jesús lo conozco, y a Pablo lo conozco, pero vosotros ¿quiénes sois?”
But a particular wicked spirit reacted and said, “Jesus I know, and I am acquainted with Paul, but who are you?”
16 El hombre en el que estaba el espíritu maligno saltó sobre ellos, los dominó y los venció, de modo que huyeron de aquella casa desnudos y heridos.
And the man in whom the wicked spirit was jumped on them and overpowered them; he was so much stronger that they ran out of that house naked and wounded.
17 Esto fue conocido por todos, tanto judíos como griegos, que vivían en Éfeso. El temor cayó sobre todos ellos, y el nombre del Señor Jesús fue magnificado.
Now this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being exalted.
18 También vinieron muchos de los que habían creído, confesando y declarando sus hechos.
And many of those who had believed started coming, confessing and disclosing their practices.
19 Muchos de los que practicaban artes mágicas reunieron sus libros y los quemaron a la vista de todos. Contaron su precio, y encontraron que era de cincuenta mil piezas de plata.
In fact, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them up, in front of everybody (they had calculated their value and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver).
20 Así, la palabra del Señor crecía y se hacía poderosa.
With power like that it was that the word of the Lord kept growing and prevailing.
21 Una vez terminadas estas cosas, Pablo determinó en el Espíritu, cuando pasó por Macedonia y Acaya, ir a Jerusalén, diciendo: “Después de haber estado allí, debo ver también Roma.”
Now after these things were accomplished, Paul resolved in his spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
22 Habiendo enviado a Macedonia a dos de los que le servían, Timoteo y Erasto, él mismo se quedó en Asia por un tiempo.
So he sent two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, on to Macedonia, while he himself stayed on in Asia for a time.
23 Por aquel tiempo se produjo un disturbio no pequeño en relación con el Camino.
Now it was during that time that a serious disturbance concerning the Way occurred.
24 Porque cierto hombre llamado Demetrio, platero que hacía santuarios de plata de Artemisa, llevó un negocio no pequeño a los artesanos,
A certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, habitually brought in plenty of business for the artisans;
25 a los que reunió con los obreros de ocupación similar, y les dijo: “Señores, sabéis que con este negocio tenemos nuestra riqueza.
he called them together, along with the workmen in related trades, and said: “Men, you know that our prosperity depends on this trade.
26 Vosotros veis y oís que no sólo en Éfeso, sino casi en toda Asia, este Pablo ha persuadido y alejado a mucha gente, diciendo que no son dioses los que se hacen con las manos.
And you observe and hear that not only in Ephesus but throughout almost all Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that handmade things are not gods.
27 No sólo existe el peligro de que este nuestro comercio caiga en descrédito, sino también de que el templo de la gran diosa Artemisa sea contado como nada y su majestad destruida, a la que toda Asia y el mundo adoran.”
So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be discredited, and even her own majesty be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”
28 Al oír esto, se llenaron de ira y gritaron diciendo: “¡Grande es Artemisa de los efesios!”
Now upon hearing this they were filled with anger and began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29 Toda la ciudad se llenó de confusión y se precipitaron al teatro al unísono, habiendo apresado a Gayo y Aristarco, hombres de Macedonia, compañeros de viaje de Pablo.
So the whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed into the theater with one accord (they had seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's traveling companions).
30 Cuando Pablo quiso entrar al pueblo, los discípulos no se lo permitieron.
When Paul wanted to go in to the people, the disciples would not let him.
31 También algunos de los asiarcas, siendo amigos suyos, le enviaron a rogarle que no se aventurara en el teatro.
Even some of the officials of Asia, being his friends, sent word to him and urged him not to venture into the theater.
32 Así pues, unos gritaban una cosa y otros otra, pues la asamblea estaba confundida. La mayoría no sabía por qué se habían reunido.
The assembly was in confusion: some were shouting one thing and some another; most of them did not know why they had come together.
33 Hicieron salir a Alejandro de entre la multitud, adelantándose los judíos. Alejandro hizo una seña con la mano, y hubiera querido hacer una defensa ante el pueblo.
Then the Jews pushed Alexander forward, out from the crowd. So Alexander motioned with his hand and would have made a defense to the people.
34 Pero cuando se dieron cuenta de que era judío, todos a una voz, durante un tiempo de unas dos horas, gritaron: “¡Grande es Artemisa de los efesios!”
But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35 Cuando el secretario municipal hubo calmado a la multitud, dijo: “Hombres de Éfeso, ¿qué hombre hay que no sepa que la ciudad de los efesios es templo de la gran diosa Artemisa y de la imagen que cayó de Zeus?
When the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said: “Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple guardian of the great goddess Artemis and of what fell from Zeus?
36 Viendo, pues, que estas cosas no se pueden negar, debéis estar tranquilos y no hacer nada precipitado.
Therefore, since these things are undeniable, you ought to be quiet and not do anything rash.
37 Pues habéis traído aquí a estos hombres, que no son ni ladrones de templos ni blasfemos de vuestra diosa.
You have arrested these men who are neither temple thieves nor blasphemers of your goddess.
38 Por tanto, si Demetrio y los artesanos que están con él tienen algún asunto contra alguien, los tribunales están abiertos y hay procónsules. Que se acusen unos a otros.
Now if Demetrius and his fellow artisans have a complaint against anyone, courts are available, and there are proconsuls; let them bring charges against one another.
39 Pero si buscan algo sobre otros asuntos, se resolverá en la asamblea ordinaria.
But if you want to debate any other matter, it will be settled in the legal assembly.
40 Porque, en efecto, corremos el peligro de ser acusados en relación con el motín de hoy, sin que haya ninguna causa. Con respecto a ella, no podríamos dar cuenta de este alboroto”.
Indeed, we are in danger of being charged with a riot, because of today, there being no reason at all that we can give to account for this commotion.”
41 Cuando hubo hablado así, despidió a la asamblea.
And having said these things he dismissed the assembly.
