2 Samuel 2
1 Después de esto, David consultó a Yahvé, diciendo: “¿Debo subir a alguna de las ciudades de Judá?”. Yahvé le dijo: “Sube”. David dijo: “¿Adónde subiré?” Dijo: “A Hebrón”.
Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” “Go up,” the LORD answered. Then David asked, “Where should I go?” “To Hebron,” replied the LORD.
2 David subió allí con sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam la jezreelita y Abigail la mujer de Nabal el carmelita.
So David went there with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
3 David hizo subir a sus hombres que estaban con él, cada uno con su familia. Vivían en las ciudades de Hebrón.
David also took the men who were with him, each with his household, and they settled in the towns near Hebron.
4 Vinieron los hombres de Judá y allí ungieron a David como rey de la casa de Judá. Le dijeron a David: “Los hombres de Jabes de Galaad fueron los que enterraron a Saúl”.
Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.”
5 David envió mensajeros a los hombres de Jabes de Galaad y les dijo: “Benditos seáis por Yahvé, porque habéis mostrado esta bondad con vuestro señor, con Saúl, y lo habéis enterrado.
So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead to tell them, “The LORD bless you, because you showed this kindness to Saul your lord when you buried him.
6 Que el Señor les muestre su bondad y su verdad. Yo también te recompensaré por esta bondad, porque has hecho esto.
Now may the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness, and I will also show you the same favor because you have done this.
7 Ahora, pues, fortalece tus manos y sé valiente, porque Saúl, tu señor, ha muerto, y también la casa de Judá me ha ungido como rey sobre ellos.”
Now then, be strong and courageous, for though Saul your lord is dead, the house of Judah has anointed me as their king.”
8 Abner, hijo de Ner, capitán del ejército de Saúl, había capturado a Isboset, hijo de Saúl, y lo había llevado a Mahanaim.
Meanwhile, Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, took Saul’s son Ish-bosheth, moved him to Mahanaim,
9 Lo hizo rey de Galaad, de los asuritas, de Jezreel, de Efraín, de Benjamín y de todo Israel.
and made him king over Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin—over all Israel.
10 Isboset, hijo de Saúl, tenía cuarenta años cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel, y reinó dos años. Pero la casa de Judá siguió a David.
Saul’s son Ish-bosheth was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David.
11 El tiempo que David fue rey en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá fue de siete años y seis meses.
And the length of time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 Abner hijo de Ner, y los siervos de Isboset hijo de Saúl, salieron de Mahanaim a Gabaón.
One day Abner son of Ner and the servants of Ish-bosheth son of Saul marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 Joab, hijo de Sarvia, y los siervos de David salieron a su encuentro junto al estanque de Gabaón, y se sentaron, el uno a un lado del estanque y el otro al otro.
So Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the pool of Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the pool.
14 Abner dijo a Joab: “¡Por favor, que los jóvenes se levanten y compitan ante nosotros!” Joab dijo: “¡Que se levanten!”
Then Abner said to Joab, “Let us have the young men get up and compete before us.” “Let them get up,” Joab replied.
15 Entonces se levantaron y pasaron por número: doce por Benjamín y por Isboset, hijo de Saúl, y doce de los siervos de David.
So they got up and were counted off—twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David.
16 Cada uno de ellos agarró a su adversario por la cabeza y le clavó la espada en el costado a su compañero; así cayeron juntos. Por eso aquel lugar de Gabaón se llamó Helkath Hazzurim.
Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his opponent’s side, and they all fell together. So this place, which is in Gibeon, is called Helkath-hazzurim.
17 La batalla fue muy dura aquel día, y Abner y los hombres de Israel fueron derrotados ante los servidores de David.
The battle that day was intense, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by the servants of David.
18 Los tres hijos de Sarvia estaban allí: Joab, Abisai y Asael. Asael era ligero de pies como una gacela salvaje.
The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was fleet of foot like a wild gazelle,
19 Asael persiguió a Abner. No se volvió ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda de seguir a Abner.
and he chased Abner, not turning to the right or to the left in his pursuit.
20 Entonces Abner miró detrás de él y dijo: “¿Eres tú, Asahel?” Respondió: “Lo es”.
And Abner glanced back and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” “It is,” Asahel replied.
21 Abner le dijo: “Vuélvete a tu derecha o a tu izquierda, agarra a uno de los jóvenes y toma su armadura”. Pero Asahel no quiso dejar de seguirlo.
So Abner told him, “Turn to your right or to your left, seize one of the young men, and take his equipment for yourself.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.
22 Abner le dijo de nuevo a Asael: “Apártate de seguirme. ¿Por qué habría de tirarte al suelo? ¿Cómo podría entonces mirar a la cara a tu hermano Joab?”
Once again, Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How could I show my face to your brother Joab?”
23 Sin embargo, él se negó a apartarse. Entonces Abner, con el extremo posterior de la lanza, lo golpeó en el cuerpo, de modo que la lanza salió por detrás de él; y allí cayó y murió en el mismo lugar. Todos los que llegaron al lugar donde cayó y murió Asael se detuvieron.
But Asahel refused to turn away; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell dead on the spot. And every man paused when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.
24 Pero Joab y Abisai persiguieron a Abner. El sol se puso cuando llegaron a la colina de Amma, que está frente a Giah por el camino del desierto de Gabaón.
But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. By sunset, they had gone as far as the hill of Ammah opposite Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 Los hijos de Benjamín se reunieron en pos de Abner y se convirtieron en un solo grupo, y se pusieron en la cima de la colina.
The Benjamites rallied to Abner, formed a single unit, and took their stand atop a hill.
26 Entonces Abner llamó a Joab y le dijo: “¿La espada va a devorar para siempre? ¿No sabes que al final será amarga? ¿Cuánto tiempo pasará entonces, antes de que pidas al pueblo que vuelva de seguir a sus hermanos?”
Then Abner called out to Joab: “Must the sword devour forever? Do you not realize that this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”
27 Joab dijo: “Vive Dios, si no hubieras hablado, seguramente por la mañana el pueblo se habría ido, y no habría seguido cada uno a su hermano”.
“As surely as God lives,” Joab replied, “if you had not spoken up, the troops would have continued pursuing their brothers until morning.”
28 Así que Joab tocó la trompeta, y todo el pueblo se detuvo y no persiguió más a Israel, y no lucharon más.
So Joab blew the ram’s horn, and all the troops stopped; they no longer pursued Israel or continued to fight.
29 Abner y sus hombres recorrieron toda aquella noche el Arabá, y pasaron el Jordán, atravesaron todo Bitrón y llegaron a Mahanaim.
And all that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, marched all morning, and arrived at Mahanaim.
30 Joab regresó de seguir a Abner, y cuando reunió a todo el pueblo, faltaban diecinueve hombres de David y Asael.
When Joab returned from pursuing Abner, he gathered all the troops. In addition to Asahel, nineteen of David’s servants were missing,
31 Pero los siervos de David habían herido a los hombres de Abner, de modo que murieron trescientos sesenta hombres.
but they had struck down 360 Benjamites who were with Abner.
32 Recogieron a Asael y lo enterraron en la tumba de su padre, que estaba en Belén. Joab y sus hombres pasaron toda la noche, y el día amaneció en Hebrón.
Later, they took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb in Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and reached Hebron at daybreak.
