1 Reyes 1

1 El rey David era ya viejo y entrado en años, y lo cubrían con ropas, pero no podía calentarse.

Now King David was old and well along in years, and though they covered him with blankets, he could not keep warm.

2 Por lo tanto, sus siervos le dijeron: “Que se busque una joven virgen para mi señor el rey. Que se ponga delante del rey y lo abrigue, y que se acueste en su seno, para que mi señor el rey se abrigue”.

So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”

3 Así que buscaron a una joven hermosa por todos los confines de Israel, y encontraron a Abisag la sunamita, y la llevaron ante el rey.

Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful girl, and they found Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the king.

4 La joven era muy hermosa, y se puso al servicio del rey, pero el rey no la conocía íntimamente.

The girl was unsurpassed in beauty; she cared for the king and served him, but he had no relations with her.

5 Entonces Adonías, hijo de Haggit, se exaltó diciendo: “Seré rey”. Entonces le preparó carros y jinetes, y cincuenta hombres para que corrieran delante de él.

At that time Adonijah, David’s son by Haggith, began to exalt himself, saying, “I will be king!” And he acquired chariots and horsemen and fifty men to run ahead of him.

6 Su padre no le había disgustado en ningún momento diciéndole: “¿Por qué lo has hecho?”, y además era un hombre muy apuesto; y había nacido después de Absalón.

(His father had never once reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act this way?” Adonijah was also very handsome, born next after Absalom.)

7 Se puso de acuerdo con Joab, hijo de Sarvia, y con el sacerdote Abiatar, y ellos siguieron a Adonías y lo ayudaron.

So Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, who supported him.

8 Pero el sacerdote Sadoc, Benaía hijo de Joiada, el profeta Natán, Simei, Rei y los valientes que pertenecían a David, no estaban con Adonías.

But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David’s mighty men would not join Adonijah.

9 Adonías mató ovejas, vacas y animales cebados junto a la piedra de Zohelet, que está al lado de En Rogel; y llamó a todos sus hermanos, los hijos del rey, y a todos los hombres de Judá, los servidores del rey;

And Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened calves near the stone of Zoheleth, which is next to En-rogel. He invited all his royal brothers and all the men of Judah who were servants of the king.

10 pero no llamó al profeta Natán, ni a Benaía, ni a los valientes, ni a su hermano Salomón.

But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or his brother Solomon.

11 Entonces Natán habló a Betsabé, madre de Salomón, diciendo: “¿No has oído que Adonías, hijo de Haggit, reina, y que nuestro señor David no lo sabe?

Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king, and our lord David does not know it?

12 Ahora, pues, ven, déjame que te aconseje, para que salves tu vida y la de tu hijo Salomón.

Now please, come and let me advise you. Save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.

13 Entra al rey David y dile: “¿No juraste tú, mi señor el rey, a tu siervo, diciendo: “Ciertamente tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí y se sentará en mi trono”? ¿Por qué, pues, reina Adonías?’

Go at once to King David and say, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear to your maidservant, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’

14 Mira, mientras aún estás hablando allí con el rey, yo también entraré después de ti y confirmaré tus palabras.”

Then, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words.”

15 Betsabé entró en la habitación del rey. El rey era muy anciano, y Abisag la sunamita servía al rey.

So Bathsheba went to see the king in his bedroom. Since the king was very old, Abishag the Shunammite was serving him.

16 Betsabé se inclinó y mostró respeto al rey. El rey le dijo: “¿Qué quieres?”.

And Bathsheba bowed down in homage to the king, who asked, “What is your desire?”

17 Ella le dijo: “Señor mío, tú juraste por Yahvé tu Dios a tu siervo: ‘Ciertamente tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí y se sentará en mi trono’.

“My lord,” she replied, “you yourself swore to your maidservant by the LORD your God: ‘Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.’

18 Ahora, he aquí que Adonías reina, y tú, mi señor el rey, no lo sabes.

But now, behold, Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, did not know it.

19 Ha matado ganado, animales gordos y ovejas en abundancia, y ha llamado a todos los hijos del rey, al sacerdote Abiatar y a Joab, capitán del ejército; pero no ha llamado a Salomón, tu siervo.

And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the other sons of the king, as well as Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army. But he did not invite your servant Solomon.

20 Tú, mi señor el rey, los ojos de todo Israel están puestos en ti, para que les digas quién se sentará en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él.

And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

21 De lo contrario, cuando mi señor el rey duerma con sus padres, yo y mi hijo Salomón seremos considerados criminales.”

Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be counted as criminals.”

22 Mientras ella seguía hablando con el rey, entró el profeta Natán.

And just then, while Bathsheba was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived.

23 Se lo comunicaron al rey, diciendo: “He aquí el profeta Natán”. Cuando entró ante el rey, se inclinó ante él con el rostro en tierra.

So the king was told, “Nathan the prophet is here.” And Nathan went in and bowed facedown before the king.

24 Natán le dijo: “Rey, señor mío, ¿has dicho que Adonías reinará después de mí y que se sentará en mi trono?”

“My lord the king,” said Nathan, “did you say, ‘Adonijah will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne’?

25 Porque hoy ha bajado y ha matado ganado, animales gordos y ovejas en abundancia, y ha llamado a todos los hijos del rey, a los capitanes del ejército y al sacerdote Abiatar. He aquí que están comiendo y bebiendo delante de él, y diciendo: “¡Viva el rey Adonías!”

For today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’

26 Pero no me ha llamado a mí, ni a tu siervo el sacerdote Sadoc, ni a Benaía hijo de Joiada, ni a tu siervo Salomón.

But me your servant he did not invite, nor Zadok the priest, nor Benaiah son of Jehoiada, nor your servant Solomon.

27 ¿Acaso ha hecho esto mi señor el rey, y no has mostrado a tus siervos quién debe sentarse en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él?”

Has my lord the king let this happen without informing your servant who should sit on the throne after my lord the king?”

28 El rey David respondió: “Llama a Betsabé”. Ella vino a la presencia del rey y se puso de pie ante el rey.

Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba for me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him.

29 El rey hizo un voto y dijo: “Vive Yahvé, que ha redimido mi alma de toda adversidad,

And the king swore an oath, saying, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,

30 ciertamente, como te juré por Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, diciendo: ‘Ciertamente tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y se sentará en mi trono en mi lugar’; ciertamente lo haré hoy.”

I will carry out this very day exactly what I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”

31 Entonces Betsabé se inclinó con el rostro hacia la tierra y mostró respeto al rey, y dijo: “¡Viva mi señor el rey David para siempre!”

Bathsheba bowed facedown in homage to the king and said, “May my lord King David live forever!”

32 El rey David dijo: “Llama a mí al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán y a Benaía, hijo de Joiada”. Ellos se presentaron ante el rey.

Then King David said, “Call in for me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king.

33 El rey les dijo: “Llevad con vosotros a los siervos de vuestro señor, y haced que mi hijo Salomón monte en mi propia mula, y llevadlo a Gihón.

“Take my servants with you,” said the king. “Set my son Solomon on my own mule and take him down to Gihon.

34 Que el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo unjan allí como rey de Israel. Tocad la trompeta y decid: “¡Viva el rey Salomón!

There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. You are to blow the ram’s horn and declare, ‘Long live King Solomon!’

35 Sube después de él, y vendrá y se sentará en mi trono; porque él será rey en mi lugar. Yo lo he designado para que sea príncipe sobre Israel y sobre Judá”.

Then you shall go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. For I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”

36 Benaía, hijo de Joiada, respondió al rey y dijo: “Amén. Que Yahvé, el Dios de mi señor el rey, lo diga.

“Amen,” replied Benaiah son of Jehoiada. “May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, so declare it.

37 Como Yahvé ha estado con mi señor el rey, así esté con Salomón, y haga su trono más grande que el trono de mi señor el rey David.”

Just as the LORD was with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon and make his throne even greater than that of my lord King David.”

38 Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán, Benaía hijo de Joiada, y los queretanos y los peletanos, bajaron e hicieron montar a Salomón en la mula del rey David, y lo llevaron a Gihón.

Then Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, went down and set Solomon on King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon.

39 El sacerdote Sadoc tomó el cuerno de aceite de la Tienda y ungió a Salomón. Tocaron la trompeta, y todo el pueblo dijo: “¡Viva el rey Salomón!”.

Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the ram’s horn, and all the people proclaimed, “Long live King Solomon!”

40 Todo el pueblo subió detrás de él, y el pueblo tocó la flauta y se alegró mucho, de modo que la tierra tembló con su sonido.

All the people followed him, playing flutes and rejoicing with such a great joy that the earth was split by the sound.

41 Adonías y todos los invitados que estaban con él lo oyeron al terminar de comer. Cuando Joab oyó el sonido de la trompeta, dijo: “¿Por qué este ruido de la ciudad alborotada?”

Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud uproar?” asked Joab.

42 Mientras él aún hablaba, he aquí que llegó Jonatán, hijo del sacerdote Abiatar, y Adonías le dijo: “Entra, porque eres un hombre digno y traes buenas noticias.”

As he was speaking, suddenly Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” said Adonijah, “for you are a man of valor. You must be bringing good news.”

43 Jonatán respondió a Adonías: “Ciertamente nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey a Salomón.

“Not at all,” Jonathan replied. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king.

44 El rey ha enviado con él al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán, a Benaía hijo de Joiada, a los cereteos y a los peleteos, y lo han hecho montar en la mula del rey.

And with Solomon, the king has sent Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, and they have set him on the king’s mule.

45 El sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo han ungido como rey en Gihón. Han subido de allí regocijados, de modo que la ciudad volvió a resonar. Este es el ruido que han escuchado.

Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there with rejoicing that rings out in the city. That is the noise you hear.

46 Además, Salomón está sentado en el trono del reino.

Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.

47 Además, los servidores del rey vinieron a bendecir a nuestro señor, el rey David, diciendo: “Que tu Dios haga que el nombre de Salomón sea mejor que tu nombre, y que su trono sea más grande que el tuyo”; y el rey se inclinó sobre el lecho.

The king’s servants have also gone to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than your own name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king has bowed in worship on his bed,

48 También dijo así el rey: ‘Bendito sea Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, que ha dado uno para sentarse hoy en mi trono, viéndolo mis ojos’”.

saying, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel! Today He has provided one to sit on my throne, and my eyes have seen it.’”

49 Todos los invitados de Adonías tuvieron miedo, se levantaron y cada uno se fue por su lado.

At this, all the guests of Adonijah arose in terror and scattered.

50 Adonías tuvo miedo a causa de Salomón, y se levantó y fue a colgarse de los cuernos del altar.

But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.

51 Se le dijo a Salomón: “He aquí que Adonías teme al rey Salomón, pues está colgado de los cuernos del altar, diciendo: ‘Que el rey Salomón me jure primero que no matará a su siervo a espada’.”

It was reported to Solomon: “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon first swear to me not to put his servant to the sword.’”

52 Salomón dijo: “Si se muestra como un hombre digno, ni un pelo suyo caerá a la tierra; pero si se encuentra maldad en él, morirá.”

And Solomon replied, “If he is a man of character, not a single hair of his will fall to the ground. But if evil is found in him, he will die.”

53 Entonces el rey Salomón envió, y lo hicieron bajar del altar. Vino y se inclinó ante el rey Salomón; y éste le dijo: “Vete a tu casa”.

So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar, and he came and bowed down before King Solomon, who said to him, “Go to your home.”
