1 Crónicas 19
1 Después de esto, murió Nahas, rey de los hijos de Amón, y su hijo reinó en su lugar.
Some time later, Nahash king of the Ammonites died and was succeeded by his son.
2 David dijo: “Mostraré bondad con Hanún, hijo de Nahas, porque su padre mostró bondad conmigo”. Entonces David envió mensajeros para consolarle respecto a su padre. Los servidores de David fueron a la tierra de los hijos de Amón a Hanún para consolarlo.
And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to console Hanun concerning his father. But when David’s servants arrived in the land of the Ammonites to console him,
3 Pero los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún: “¿Acaso crees que David honra a tu padre, pues te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No han venido a ti sus siervos para buscar, derrocar y espiar la tierra?”
the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Have not his servants come to you to explore the land, spy it out, and overthrow it?”
4 Entonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David, los afeitó y les cortó los vestidos por la mitad a la altura de las nalgas, y los despidió.
So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved their beards, cut off their garments at the hips, and sent them away.
5 Luego, algunas personas fueron a contarle a David cómo habían sido tratados los hombres. Él envió a recibirlos, pues los hombres estaban muy humillados. El rey les dijo: “Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba, y luego vuelvan”.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
6 Cuando los hijos de Amón vieron que se habían hecho odiosos para David, Hanún y los hijos de Amón enviaron mil talentos de plata para contratar carros y jinetes de Mesopotamia, de Aram-maacá y de Zoba.
When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, Aram-maacah, and Zobah.
7 Y contrataron para sí treinta y dos mil carros, y al rey de Maaca con su gente, que vino y acampó cerca de Medeba. Los hijos de Amón se reunieron desde sus ciudades y vinieron a la batalla.
So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, as well as the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba while the Ammonites came from their cities and marched out for battle.
8 Cuando David se enteró, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de valientes.
On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army of mighty men.
9 Los hijos de Amón salieron y prepararon la batalla a la puerta de la ciudad, y los reyes que habían venido estaban solos en el campo.
The Ammonites marched out and arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance to the city, while the kings who had come stayed by themselves in the open country.
10 Cuando Joab vio que la batalla estaba preparada contra él por delante y por detrás, escogió a algunos de todos los hombres selectos de Israel y los puso en orden de batalla contra los sirios.
When Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Arameans.
11 El resto del pueblo lo puso en manos de Abisai, su hermano, y se puso en orden de batalla contra los amonitas.
And he placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai, who arrayed them against the Ammonites.
12 Él dijo: “Si los sirios son demasiado fuertes para mí, tú me ayudarás; pero si los hijos de Amón son demasiado fuertes para ti, yo te ayudaré.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me,” said Joab, “then you will come to my rescue. And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your rescue.
13 Sé valiente, y seamos fuertes por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios. Que Yahvé haga lo que le parece bien”.
Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in His sight.”
14 Entonces Joab y el pueblo que estaba con él se acercaron al frente de los sirios a la batalla, y huyeron ante él.
So Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
15 Cuando los hijos de Amón vieron que los sirios habían huido, huyeron igualmente ante Abisai, su hermano, y entraron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab llegó a Jerusalén.
When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before Joab’s brother Abishai, and they entered the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem.
16 Cuando los sirios vieron que habían sido derrotados por Israel, enviaron mensajeros y convocaron a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río, con Shophach, el capitán del ejército de Hadadezer, al frente.
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17 David recibió la noticia, así que reunió a todo Israel, pasó el Jordán, llegó hasta ellos y preparó la batalla contra ellos. Cuando David preparó la batalla contra los sirios, éstos lucharon con él.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, advanced toward the Arameans, and arrayed for battle against them. When David lined up to engage them in battle, they fought against him.
18 Los sirios huyeron ante Israel, y David mató de los sirios a siete mil cuadrillas y cuarenta mil hombres de a pie, y también mató a Shophach, el capitán del ejército.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army.
19 Cuando los servidores de Hadadézer vieron que habían sido derrotados por Israel, hicieron la paz con David y le sirvieron. Los sirios no quisieron ayudar más a los hijos de Amón.
When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were unwilling to help the Ammonites anymore.
