Proverbios 23
1 Cuando te sientes a comer con un gobernante, ten cuidado con lo que te sirven,
If thou sit to sup at the table of a prince, consider attentively the things set before thee:
2 y ponte límites si tienes mucha hambre.
and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such [meats]: but if thou art very insatiable,
3 No seas glotón en sus finos banquetes, porque lo ofrecen con motivaciones engañosas.
desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life.
4 No te desgastes tratando de volverte rico. ¡Sé sabio y no te afanes en ello!
If thou art poor, measure not thyself with a rich man; but refrain thyself in thy wisdom.
5 La riqueza desaparece en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, abriendo repentinamente alas, y volando al cielo como el águila.
If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master.
6 No aceptes ir a comer con personas mezquinas, ni codicies sus finos banquetes,
Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats:
7 porque tal como son sus pensamientos, así son ellos. Ellos dicen: “¡Ven, come y bebe!” Pero en sus mentes no tienen ningún interés en ti.
so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him:
8 Vomitarás cada pedazo que hayas comido, y las palabras de aprecio se habrán consumido.
for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words.
9 No hables con los tontos porque ellos se burlarán de tus palabras sabias.
Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words.
10 No muevas las fronteras antiguas, y no invadas los campos que pertenecen a huérfanos,
Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:
11 porque su Protector es poderoso y él peleará su caso contra ti.
for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.
12 Enfoca tu mente en la instrucción; escucha las palabras de conocimiento.
Apply thine heart to instruction, and prepare thine ears for words of discretion.
13 No evites disciplinar a tus hijos, pues un golpe no los matará.
Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.
For thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from death. (Sheol h7585)
15 Hijo mío, si piensas con sabiduría me harás feliz;
Son, if thy heart be wise, thou shalt also gladden my heart;
16 Me deleitaré cuando hables con rectitud.
and thy lips shall converse with my lips, if they be right.
17 No mires a los pecadores con envidia, sino recuerda siempre honrar al Señor,
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day.
18 porque ciertamente hay un futuro para ti, y tu esperanza no será destruida.
For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; and thine hope shall not be removed.
19 Presta atención, hijo mío, y sé sabio. Asegúrate de enfocar tu mente en seguir el camino recto.
Hear, [my] son, and be wise, and rightly direct the thoughts of thine heart.
20 No te juntes con los que beben mucho vino, o con los que se sacian de carne.
Be not a wine-bibber, neither continue long at feasts, and purchases of flesh:
21 Porque los que se emborrachan y comen de más, pierden todo lo que tienen; y pasan el tiempo adormilados, por lo cual solo les quedan trapos para vestir.
for every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; and every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments.
22 Presta atención a tu padre, y no rechaces a tu madre cuando sea vieja.
Hearken, [my] son, to thy father which begot thee, and despise not [thy mother] because she is grown old.
23 Invierte en tener la verdad y no la vendas. Invierte en la sabiduría, la instrucción y la inteligencia.
24 Los hijos que hacen el bien alegran a sus padres; un hijo sabio trae alegría a su padre.
A righteous father brings up [his children] well; and his soul rejoices over a wise son.
25 Haz que tu padre y tu madre se alegren; trae alegría a la que te parió.
Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, and let her that bore thee be glad.
26 Hijo mío, dame toda tu atención, y sigue mi ejemplo con alegría.
[My] son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27 Una prostituta es como quedar atrapado en un foso. La mujer inmoral es como quedar atrapado en un pozo estrecho.
For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow.
28 Tal como un ladrón, ella se recuesta para esperar y agarrar a los hombres por sorpresa, para que sean infieles a sus mujeres.
For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.
29 ¿Quién estará en problemas? ¿Quién sufrirá dolor? ¿Quién estará en discusión? ¿Quién se quejará? ¿Quién saldrá lastimado sin razón alguna? ¿Quién tendrá los ojos enrojecidos?
Who [has] woe? who trouble? who [has] quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who [has] bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid?
30 Los que pasan mucho tiempo bebiendo vino, los que siempre están probando un nuevo cóctel.
Are not those of them that stay long at wine? [are] not [those] of them that haunt [the places] where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse [with them] openly.
31 No dejes que la apariencia del vino te tiente, ya sea por su color rojo o por sus burbujas en la copa, o por la suavidad con que se asienta.
For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle.
32 Al final morderá como una serpiente, y te causará dolor como víbora.
But at last [such a one] stretches himself out as one smitten by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent.
33 Alucinarás, verás cosas extrañas, y tu mente confundida te hará decir toda clase de locuras.
Whenever thine eyes shall behold a strange woman, then thy mouth shall speak perverse things.
34 Te tropezarás como si rodaras por el océano. Serás sacudido como quien se recuesta en el mástil de una embarcación, diciendo:
And thou shalt lie as in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot in a great storm.
35 “La gente me golpeó, pero no me dolió; me dieron azotes, pero no sentí nada. Ahora debo levantarme porque necesito otro trago”.
And thou shalt say, They smote me, and I was not pained; and they mocked me, and I knew it not: when will it be morning, that I may go and seek those with whom I may go in company?
