Proverbios 17
1 Mejor es comer un trozo seco de comida en paz, que un banquete en una casa llena de conflictos.
Better a dry morsel, and peace therewith, than a house full of contentious sacrifices.
2 Un siervo que actúa con sabiduría se hará cargo del hijo que ha caído en desgracia, y compartirá la herencia de la familia con los hermanos.
A prudent servant, shall rule over a son who causeth shame, and, in the midst of brothers, shall he share the inheritance.
3 El crisol sirve para probar la plata, y un horno para probar el oro; pero el Señor prueba las mentes.
Fining-pot for silver, crucible for gold, but, he that trieth hearts, is Yahweh.
4 Las personas malvadas escuchan las palabras dañinas; y los mentirosos escuchan las palabras de maldad.
Discord, giveth heed to the aggrieving lip, —Falsehood, giveth ear to the destroying tongue.
5 Todo aquél que oprime al pobre, insulta a su Hacedor; y el que disfruta viendo el sufrimiento de otros será castigado.
He that mocketh the poor, hath reproached his Maker, He that maketh merry at distress, shall not be held innocent.
6 Los ancianos se alegran de sus nietos, y los hijos sienten orgullo de sus padres.
The crown of old men, consists of children’s children, and the adornment of children, is their fathers.
7 Las palabras sofisticadas no lucen en la boca de los tontos; mucho menos las mentiras deben estar en labios de un gobernante.
Unseemly in an unworthy man, is the lip of excellence, much more, in one of noble mind, the lip of falsehood.
8 Los que practican el soborno creen que tienen una piedra mágica, y creen que tendrán éxito dondequiera que vayan.
A gift, in the eyes of its owner, is, a stone of beauty, whithersoever it turneth, it bringeth prosperity.
9 Si perdonas un mal, cosecharás una amistad; pero si sigues hablando de la ofensa, perderás a tu amigo.
He that hideth a transgression, seeketh love, but, he that repeateth a matter, separateth intimate friends.
10 Duele más un solo reproche al que es inteligente, que cien golpes a un tonto.
A reproof sinketh more deeply into an intelligent man than a hundred stripes, into a dullard!
11 Los malvados solo piensan en rebelarse, por eso un mensajero cruel será enviado para atacarlos.
Nothing less than rebellion, doth a wicked man seek, and, a relentless messenger, shall be sent out against him.
12 Mejor es encontrarte con una madre oso a quien le han robado sus hijos, que con una persona estúpida.
Let a bereaved bear encounter man, rather than a dullard, with his folly!
13 Si pagas con mal el bien, el mal nunca saldrá de tu casa.
He that returneth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 El comienzo de una discordia es como la primera grieta en una presa de agua, así que abandónala antes de que la discusión estalle.
A letting forth of water, is the beginning of strife, therefore, before it breaketh out, abandon, contention.
15 El Señor odia cuando los malvados son absueltos y los inocentes son condenados.
He that justifieth the lawless, and he that condemneth the righteous, an abomination to Yahweh, are they, both.
16 ¿Tiene sentido que los tontos traten de comprar sabiduría cuando ni siquiera quieren aprender?
Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a dullard? that he who is without sense, may acquire wisdom.
17 Un verdadero amigo estará siempre allí para amarte, y la familia te ayudará en momentos de tribulación.
At all times, doth a friend love, and, a brother for distress, must be born.
18 No es sabio comprometerse y ser fiador de la deuda del prójimo.
A man lacking sense, is one who striketh hands, giving security, before his neighbour.
19 A los que aman el pecado les gusta el pleito. Los que construyen muros altos invitan a la destrucción.
A lover of transgression, is one who loveth strife, he that heighteneth his door, seeketh grievous harm.
20 Las personas con mentes perversas no tendrán éxito; Los mentirosos se meterán en problemas.
The crooked in heart, shall not find good, and, he that is perverse with his tongue, shall fall into wickedness.
21 Un hijo tonto acarrea tristeza para tu padre; el padre de un hijo que actúa con necedad no vivirá con alegría.
He that begetteth a dullard, it is to his own grief, neither can the father of the base, rejoice.
22 Un corazón alegre es buena medicina; pero el desánimo te enfermará.
A joyful heart, worketh an excellent cure, —but, a stricken spirit, drieth up the bone.
23 Los malvados toman botines ocultos para tergiversar el curso de la justicia.
A bribe out of his bosom, doth a lawless man take, to pervert the ways of justice.
24 Los prudentes están atentos a la sabiduría, pero los ojos de los tontos siempre están divagando.
Before the face of the discerning, is wisdom, but, the eyes of a dullard, are in the ends of the earth.
25 Un hijo tonto acarrea vergüenza a su padre, y tristeza a la madre que lo parió.
A vexation to his father, is the son that is a dullard, and a bitterness, to her that bare him.
26 No es correcto imponer una multa a una persona inocente ni flagelar a los líderes buenos por su honestidad.
Surely, to chastise the righteous, is not good, to smite the noble-minded for equity.
27 Si eres sabio, cuidarás tus palabras; y si eres prudente, cuidarás tu temperamento.
Sparing of his words, is one who valueth knowledge, and, of a thoughtful spirit, is a man of intelligence.
28 Hasta los tontos son considerados sabios cuando callan; y al no decir nada, aparentan inteligencia.
Even a fool, holding his peace, is accounted, wise, —He that closeth his lips, [is thought] to have understanding.
