Nehemías 4

1 Cuando Sanbalat se enteró de que estábamos reconstruyendo el muro, se puso furioso, ¡muy furioso! Se burló de los judíos

And it comes to pass, when Sanballat has heard that we are building the wall, that it is displeasing to him, and he is very angry and mocks at the Jews,

2 delante de sus colegas y del ejército de Samaria, diciendo: “¿Qué pretenden estos judíos inútiles? ¿Creen que pueden reconstruir el muro? ¿Van a ofrecer sacrificios? ¿Van a terminarlo en un día? ¿Creen que pueden reutilizar las piedras de los montones de escombros y de tierra, sobre todo porque todas han sido quemadas?”

and says before his brothers and the force of Samaria, indeed, he says, “What [are] the weak Jews doing? Are they left to themselves? Do they sacrifice? Do they complete in a day? Do they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish—and they are burned?”

3 Tobías el amonita, que estaba a su lado, comentó: “¡Hasta una zorra que caminara sobre lo que están construyendo derribaría su muro de piedras!”

And Tobiah the Ammonite [is] by him and says, “Also, that which they are building—if a fox goes up, then it has broken down their stone wall.”

4 Yo oré: “Señor, por favor, escúchanos, porque nos están tratando con desprecio. Haz que sus insultos caigan sobre sus propias cabezas. Que se los lleven como un botín, prisioneros en tierra extranjera.

Hear, O our God, for we have been despised; and return their reproach on their own head, and give them for a spoil in a land of captivity;

5 No perdones sus culpas ni borres sus pecados, porque te han hecho enfadar delante de los constructores”.

and do not cover over their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You, for they have provoked [You] to anger in front of those building.

6 Así que reconstruimos la muralla hasta que quedó toda unida, llegando a la mitad de su altura, porque el pueblo estaba deseoso de trabajar.

And we build the wall, and all the wall is joined—to its half, and the people have a heart to work.

7 Cuando Sanbalat y Tobías, y los árabes, los amonitas y los asdoditas, oyeron que la reparación de las murallas de Jerusalén avanzaba y que se estaban rellenando los huecos, se pusieron furiosos.

And it comes to pass, when Sanballat has heard, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, that lengthening has gone up to the walls of Jerusalem, that the breeches have begun to be stopped, then it is very displeasing to them,

8 Todos conspiraron juntos para venir a atacar Jerusalén y para confundirlo todo.

and they conspire, all of them together, to come to fight against Jerusalem, and to do to it injury.

9 Así que oramos a nuestro Dios, y tuvimos guardias preparados para defendernos de ellos día y noche.

And we pray to our God, and appoint a watch against them, by day and by night, because of them.

10 Entonces la gente de Judá empezó a refunfuñar, diciendo: “Los obreros están agotados. Hay demasiados escombros que limpiar. Nunca podremos terminar el muro”.

And Judah says, “The power of the burden-bearers has become feeble, and the rubbish [is] abundant, and we are not able to build on the wall.”

11 Nuestros enemigos se decían: “Antes de que se den cuenta, antes de que se den cuenta de nada, apareceremos en medio de ellos, los mataremos y pondremos fin a lo que están haciendo”.

And our adversaries say, “They do not know, nor see, until we come into their midst, and have slain them, and caused the work to cease.”

12 Los judíos que vivían cerca venían y nos decían una y otra vez: “Nos van a atacar desde todas las direcciones!”

And it comes to pass, when the Jews have come who are dwelling near them, that they say to us ten times from all the places to where you return—[they are] against us.

13 Así que posicioné a los defensores detrás de las secciones más bajas y vulnerables de la muralla. Les hice tomar sus posiciones por familias, armados con sus espadas, lanzas y arcos.

And I appoint at the lowest of the places, at the back of the wall, in the clear places, indeed, I appoint the people, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 Después de inspeccionar nuestras defensas, me puse de pie y me dirigí a los nobles, a los funcionarios y al resto del pueblo, diciendo: “¡No tengan miedo de ellos! ¡Recordad al Señor, que es poderoso y formidable! Luchad por vuestros hermanos, vuestros hijos y vuestras hijas, vuestras mujeres y vuestros hogares”.

And I see, and rise up, and say to the nobles, and to the prefects, and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord, the great and the fearful, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

15 Cuando nuestros enemigos descubrieron que conocíamos su plan y que Dios lo había frustrado, todos volvimos a nuestro trabajo en el muro.

And it comes to pass, when our enemies have heard that it has been known to us, and God frustrates their counsel, and we return, all of us, to the wall, each to his work;

16 A partir de ese momento, la mitad de mis hombres se dedicó a trabajar, mientras que la otra mitad estaba preparada para luchar, con sus lanzas, escudos, arcos y armaduras. Los líderes se colocaron detrás de todo el pueblo de Judá

indeed, it comes to pass, from that day, half of my servants are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the heads [are] behind all the house of Judah.

17 que estaba construyendo el muro. Los que llevaban los materiales trabajaban con una mano, y en la otra sostenían un arma.

The builders on the wall, and the bearers of the burden, those loading, [each] with one of his hands is working in the business, and one is laying hold of the missile.

18 Todos los constructores llevaban una espada atada al costado, y el trompetista estaba a mi lado.

And the builders [are] each with his sword, girded on his loins, and building, and he who is blowing with a horn [is] beside me.

19 Luego les dije a los nobles, a los funcionarios y al resto del pueblo: “Tenemos mucho que hacer en todas partes, así que estamos muy repartidos a lo largo de la muralla.

And I say to the nobles, and to the prefects, and to the rest of the people, “The work is abundant, and large, and we are separated on the wall, far off from one another;

20 Dondequiera que estén y oigan el sonido de la trompeta, corranpara unirse a nosotros allí. Nuestro Dios luchará por nosotros”.

in the place that you hear the voice of the horn there you are gathered to us; our God fights for us.”

21 Seguimos trabajando, con la mitad de los hombres sosteniendo lanzas desde el amanecer hasta que salieron las estrellas.

And we are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of the spears, from the going up of the dawn until the coming forth of the stars.

22 También le dije a la gente: “Todos, incluidos los sirvientes, deben pasar la noche dentro de Jerusalén, para que puedan hacer guardia por la noche y trabajar durante el día”.

Also, at that time I said to the people, “Let each lodge with his servant in the midst of Jerusalem, and they have been a watch for us by night, and [for] the work by day”:

23 Durante ese tiempo ninguno de nosotros se cambió de ropa, ni yo, ni mis hermanos, ni mis hombres, ni los guardias que estaban conmigo. Todos llevaban sus armas en todo momento, incluso para ir a buscaragua.

and there are none—I, and my brothers, and my servants, the men of the watch who [are] after me—there are none of us putting off our garments, each [has] his vessel of water.
