Juan 11
1 Un hombre llamado Lázaro estaba enfermo. Él vivía en Betania con sus hermanas María y Marta.
Now a man named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill; he belonged to the same village as Mary and her sister Martha.
2 María fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume y secó sus pies con su cabello. El que estaba enfermo era su hermano Lázaro.
This Mary, whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who anointed the Master with perfume, and wiped his feet with her hair.
3 Entonces las hermanas enviaron un mensaje a Jesús: “Señor, tu amigo está enfermo”.
The sisters, therefore, sent this message to Jesus — ‘Master, your friend is ill’;
4 Cuando Jesús escuchó la noticia dijo: “El resultado final de esta enfermedad no será la muerte. A través de esto, será revelada la gloria de Dios, a fin de que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado”.
and, when Jesus heard it, he said: “This illness is not to end in death, but is to redound to the honour of God, in order that the Son of God may be honoured through it.”
5 Aunque Jesús amaba a Marta, María y Lázaro,
Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 y aunque había escuchado que Lázaro estaba enfermo, se quedó en el lugar donde estaba durante dos días más.
Yet, when he heard of the illness of Lazarus, he still stayed two days in the place where he was.
7 Entonces le dijo a los discípulos: “Regresemos a Judea”.
Then, after that, he said to his disciples: “Let us go to Judea again.”
8 Los discípulos respondieron: “Maestro, hace apenas unos días los judíos estaban tratando de apedrearte. ¿Realmente quieres regresar allá ahora?”
“Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews were but just now seeking to stone you; and are you going there again?”
9 “¿Acaso no tiene doce horas el día?” respondió Jesús.
“Are not there twelve hours in the day?” answered Jesus. “If a man walks about in the day-time, he does not stumble, because he can see the light of the sun;
10 “Si la gente camina durante el día, no se tropieza porque puede ver hacia dónde va, gracias a la luz de este mundo. Pero si camina por la noche, se tropieza porque no hay luz”.
but, if he walks about at night, he stumbles, because he has not the light.”
11 Después de decirles esto, les dijo: “Nuestro amigo Lázaro se ha dormido, ¡pero yo voy para despertarlo!”
And, when he had said this, he added: “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going that I may wake him.”
12 Los discípulos dijeron: “Señor, si está durmiendo, se pondrá mejor”.
“If he has fallen asleep, Master, he will get well,” said the disciples.
13 Jesús se había estado refiriendo a la muerte de Lázaro, pero los discípulos pensaban que él se refería realmente al acto de dormir.
But Jesus meant that he was dead; they, however, supposed that he was speaking of natural sleep.
14 Así que Jesús les dijo claramente: “Lázaro está muerto.
Then he said to them plainly: “Lazarus is dead;
15 Me alegro por ustedes de que yo no estaba allí, porque ahora ustedes podrán creer en mí. Vayamos y veámoslo”.
and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may learn to believe in me. But let us go to him.”
16 Tomás, el gemelo, dijo a sus condiscípulos: “Vayamos también para que muramos con él”.
At this, Thomas, who was called ‘The Twin,’ said to his fellow-disciples: “Let us go too, so that we may die with him.”
17 Cuando Jesús llegó, se enteró de que Lázaro había estado en la tumba por cuatro días.
When Jesus reached the place, he found that Lazarus had been four days in the tomb already.
18 Betania estaba apenas a dos millas de Jerusalén,
Bethany being only about two miles from Jerusalem,
19 y muchos judíos habían venido a consolar a María y Marta ante la pérdida de su hermano.
a number of the Jews had come there to condole with Martha and Mary on their brother’s death.
20 Cuando Marta supo que Jesús venía, salió a su encuentro, pero María se quedó en casa.
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat quietly at home.
21 Marta le dijo a Jesús: “Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.
“Master,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 Pero estoy segura de que incluso ahora Dios te concederá cualquier cosa que le pidas”.
Even now, I know that God will grant you whatever you ask him.”
23 Jesús le dijo: “Tu hermano se levantará de nuevo”.
“Your brother shall rise to life,” said Jesus.
24 “Sé que se levantará en la resurrección, en el día final”, respondió Marta.
“I know that he will,” replied Martha, “in the resurrection at the Last Day.”
25 Jesús dijo: “Yo soy la resurrección y la vida. Aquellos que creen en mí, vivirán aunque mueran.
“I am the Resurrection and the Life,” said Jesus. “He that believes in me shall live, though he die;
and he who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (aiōn g165)
27 “Sí, Señor”, respondió ella, “Yo creo que eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, el que esperábamos que viniera al mundo”.
“Yes Master,” she answered; “I have learned to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, ‘who was to come’ into the world.”
28 Cuando ella terminó de decir esto, fue y le dijo a su hermana María, en privado: “El Maestro está aquí y ha dicho que quiere verte”.
After saying this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, and whispered: “The Teacher is here, and is asking for you.”
29 Tan pronto escuchó esto, María se levantó y fue a verlo.
As soon as Mary heard that, she got up quickly, and went to meet him.
30 Jesús todavía no había llegado a la aldea. Aún estaba en el lugar donde Marta lo había ido a recibir.
Jesus had not then come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.
31 Los judíos que habían estado consolando a María en la casa vieron cómo ella se levantó rápidamente y salió. Entonces la siguieron, pensado que se dirigía a la tumba a llorar.
So the Jews, who were in the house with Mary, condoling with her, when they saw her get up quickly and go out, followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 Cuando María llegó al lugar donde estaba Jesús y lo vio, se postró a sus pies y dijo: “Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto”.
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she threw herself at his feet. “Master,” she exclaimed, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”
33 Cuando la vio llorando a ella y a los judíos que habían venido con ella, Jesús se sintió atribulado y triste.
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her weeping also, he groaned deeply, and was greatly distressed.
34 “¿Dónde lo han puesto?” preguntó él. Ellos respondieron: “Señor, ven y ve”.
“Where have you buried him?” he asked. “Come and see, Master,” they answered.
35 Entonces Jesús también lloró.
Jesus burst into tears.
36 “Miren cuánto lo amaba”, dijeron los judíos.
“How he must have loved him!” the Jews exclaimed;
37 Pero algunos de ellos decían: “Si pudo abrir los ojos de un hombre ciego, ¿no podía haber impedido la muerte de Lázaro?”
but some of them said: “Could not this man, who gave sight to the blind man, have also prevented Lazarus from dying?”
38 Muy atribulado, Jesús se dirigió a la tumba. Era una cueva con una gran piedra que tapaba la entrada.
Again groaning inwardly, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against the mouth of it.
39 “Quiten la piedra”, les dijo Jesús. Pero Marta, la hermana del difunto, dijo: “Señor, en este momento ya debe haber mal olor porque él ha estado muerto por cuatro días”.
“Move the stone away,” said Jesus. “Master,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time the smell must be offensive, for this is the fourth day since his death.”
40 “¿No te dije que si crees en mi verás la Gloria de Dios?” respondió Jesús.
“Did not I tell you,” replied Jesus, “that, if you would believe in me, you should see the glory of God?”
41 Entonces quitaron la piedra. Jesús levantó su mirada hacia el cielo y dijo: “Padre, gracias por escucharme.
So they moved the stone away; and Jesus, with uplifted eyes, said: “Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard my prayer;
42 Yo sé que siempre me escuchas. Dije esto por causa de la multitud que está aquí, a fin de que crean que tú me enviaste”.
I know that thou always hearest me; but I say this for the sake of the people standing near, so that they may believe that thou has sent me as thy Messenger.”
43 Después de decir esto, Jesús dijo en voz alta: “¡Lázaro, sal de ahí!”
Then, after saying this, Jesus called in a loud voice: “Lazarus! come out!”
44 El difunto salió. Sus manos y sus pies estaban envueltos con tiras de lino, y su cabeza estaba envuelta con un paño. “Quítenle las vendas y déjenlo ir”, les dijo Jesús.
The dead man came out, wrapped hand and foot in a winding-sheet; his face, too, had been wrapped in a cloth. “Set him free,” said Jesus, “and let him go.”
45 Como consecuencia de esto, muchos de los judíos que habían venido a consolar a María y que vieron lo que Jesús hizo, creyeron en él.
In consequence of this, many of the Jews, who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did, learned to believe in him.
46 Pero otros fueron donde los fariseos y les contaron lo que Jesús había hecho.
Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees, and told them what he had done.
47 Entonces el jefe de los sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron una reunión del Concilio Supremo. “¿Qué haremos?” preguntaban. “Este hombre está haciendo muchos milagros.
Upon this the Chief Priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the High Council, and said: “What are we to do, now that this man is giving so many signs?
48 Si dejamos que siga, todos creerán en él, y entonces los romanos destruirán tanto el Templo como nuestra nación”.
If we let him alone as we are doing, every one will believe in him; and the Romans will come and will take from us both our City and our Nationality.”
49 “¡Ustedes no entienden nada!” dijo Caifás, quien era el Sumo sacerdote en ese año.
One of them, however, Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, said to them:
50 “¿Acaso no se dan cuenta de que es mejor para ustedes que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo y no que toda la nación sea destruida?”
“You are utterly mistaken. You do not consider that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, rather than the whole nation should be destroyed.”
51 Él no decía esto por su propia cuenta, sino que como Sumo sacerdote en ese año, él estaba profetizando que Jesús moriría por la nación.
Now he did not say this of his own accord; but, as High Priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was to die for the nation —
52 Y no solo por la nación judía, sino por todos los hijos de Dios que estaban esparcidos, a fin de que volvieran a reunirse y ser un solo pueblo.
And not for the nation only, but also that he might unite in one body the Children of God now scattered far and wide.
53 A partir de ese momento, ellos conspiraban sobre cómo podían matar a Jesús.
So from that day they plotted to put Jesus to death.
54 De modo que Jesús no viajaba de manera pública entre los judíos sino que se fue a una ciudad llamada Efraín, en la región cercana al desierto, y permaneció allí con sus discípulos.
In consequence of this, Jesus did not go about publicly among the Jews any more, but left that neighbourhood, and went into the country bordering on the Wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 Ya casi era la fecha de la celebración de la Pascua judía, y mucha gente se fue del campo hasta Jerusalén para purificarse para la Pascua.
But the Jewish Festival of the Passover was near; and many people had gone up from the country to Jerusalem, for their ‘purification,’ before the Festival began.
56 La gente buscaba a Jesús y hablaban de él mientras estaban en el Templo. “¿Qué piensan de esto?” se preguntaban unos a otros. “¿Será que no vendrá a la fiesta?”
So they looked for Jesus there, and said to one another, as they stood in the Temple Courts: “What do you think? Do you think he will come to the Festival?”
57 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado la orden de que cualquiera que supiera dónde estaba Jesús debía informarles para así poder arrestarlo.
The Chief Priests and the Pharisees had already issued orders that, if any one learned where Jesus was, he should give information, so that they might arrest him.
