Hebreos 11
1 Ahora bien, nuestra fe en Dios es la seguridad de lo que esperamos, la evidencia de lo que no podemos ver.
Faith is the realisation of things hoped for — the proof of things not seen.
2 Los que vivieron hace mucho tiempo, creyeron en Dios y eso fue lo que les hizo obtener la aprobación de Dios.
And it was for faith that the men of old were renowned.
3 Mediante nuestra fe en Dios comprendemos que todo el universo fue creado por su mandato, y que lo que se ve fue hecho a partir de lo que no se puede ver. (aiōn g165)
Faith enables us to perceive that the universe was created at the bidding of God — so that we know that what we see was not made out of visible things. (aiōn g165)
4 Por la fe en Dios Abel ofreció a Dios mejor sacrificio que Caín, y por eso Dios lo señaló como alguien que vivía rectamente. Dios lo demostró al aceptar su ofrenda. Aunque Abel ha estado muerto por mucho tiempo, todavía Dios nos habla por medio de lo que él hizo.
Faith made the sacrifice which Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain’s, and won him renown as a righteous man, God himself establishing his renown by accepting his gifts; and it is by the example of his faith that Abel, though dead, still speaks.
5 Por fe en Dios Enoc fue llevado al cielo para que no experimentara la muerte. Y no pudieron encontrarlo en la tierra porque fue llevado al cielo. Y antes de esto, a Enoc se le conocía como alguien que agradaba a Dios.
Faith led to Enoch’s removal from earth, that he might not experience death. ‘He could not be found because God had removed him.’ For, before his removal, he was renowned as having pleased God;
6 ¡No podemos esperar que Dios se agrade de nosotros si no confiamos en él! Todo el que se acerca a Dios debe creer que él existe, y que recompensa a quienes lo buscan.
but without faith it is impossible to please him, for he who comes to God must believe that God exists, and that he rewards those who seek for him.
7 Noé creyó en Dios, y él mismo le advirtió sobre cosas que nunca antes habían sucedido. Y como Noé atendió lo que Dios le dijo, construyó un arca para salvar a su familia. Y por fe en Dios, Noé mostró que el mundo estaba equivocado, y recibió la recompensa de ser justificado por Dios.
It was faith that enabled Noah, after he had received the divine warning about what could not then be foreseen, to build, in reverent obedience, an ark in which to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world, and became possessed of that righteousness which follows upon faith.
8 Por la fe en Dios Abraham obedeció cuando Dios lo llamó para ir a la tierra que él le daría. Y partió sin saber hacia dónde iba.
It was faith that enabled Abraham to obey the Call that he received, and to set out for the place which he was afterwards to obtain as his own; and he set out not knowing where he was going.
9 Por fe en Dios vivió en la tierra prometida, pero como extranjero, viviendo en tiendas junto a Isaac y Jacob, quienes participaron con él al ser herederos de la misma promesa.
It was faith that made him go to live as an emigrant in the Promised Land — as in a strange country — living there in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who shared the promise with him.
10 Porque Abraham buscaba una ciudad construida sobre fundamentos duraderos, siendo Dios el constructor y hacedor de ella.
For he was looking for the City with the sure foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
11 Por su fe en Dios, incluso la misma Sara pudo concebir un hijo aunque fuera muy vieja para hacerlo, pues creyó en Dios, que había hecho la promesa.
Again, it was faith that enabled Sarah to conceive (though she was past the age for child-bearing), because she felt sure that he who had given her the promise would not fail her.
12 Por eso, los descendientes de Abraham, (¡que ya estaba a punto de morir!), se volvieron numerosos como las estrellas del cielo e innumerables como la arena del mar.
And so from one man — and that when his powers were dead — there sprang a people as numerous ‘as the stars in the heavens or the countless grains of sand upon the shore.’
13 Y todos ellos murieron creyendo aún en Dios. Aunque no recibieron las cosas que Dios prometió, todavía las esperaban, como desde la distancia y lo aceptaron gustosos, sabiendo que eran extranjeros en esta tierra, pasajeros solamente.
All these died sustained by faith. They did not obtain the promised blessings, but they saw them from a distance and welcomed the sight, and they acknowledged themselves to be only aliens and strangers on the earth.
14 Quienes hablan de esta manera dejan ver que esperan un país que es de ellos.
Those who speak thus show plainly that they are seeking their fatherland.
15 Porque si les importara el país que habían dejado atrás, habrían regresado.
If they had been thinking of the land that they had left, they could have found opportunities to return.
16 Pero ellos esperan un mejor país, un país celestial. Por eso Dios no se defrauda de ellos, y se alegra de llamarse su Dios, porque él ha construido una ciudad para ellos.
But no, they were longing for a better, a heavenly, land! And therefore God was not ashamed to be called their God; indeed he had already prepared them a city.
17 Abraham creyó en Dios cuando fue puesto a prueba y ofreció a Isaac como ofrenda a Dios. Abraham, quien había aceptado las promesas de Dios, incluso estuvo listo para dar a su único hijo, como ofrenda
It was faith that enabled Abraham, when put to the test, to offer Isaac as a sacrifice — he who had received the promises offering up his only son,
18 aun cuando se le había dicho: “Por medio de Isaac se contará tu descendencia”.
of whom it had been said — ‘It is through Isaac that there shall be descendants to bear thy name.’
19 Abraham consideró las cosas y concluyó que Dios podía resucitar a Isaac de los muertos. Y en cierto modo eso fue lo que sucedió: Abraham recibió de vuelta a Isaac de entre los muertos.
For he argued that God was able even to raise a man from the dead — and indeed, figuratively speaking, Abraham did receive Isaac back from the dead.
20 Por la fe en Dios, Isaac bendijo a Jacob y a Esaú, considerando lo que el futuro traería.
It was faith that enabled Isaac to bless Jacob and Esau, even with regard to the future.
21 Confiando en Dios, Jacob, casi a punto de morir, bendijo a los hijos de José, y adoró a Dios apoyado en su bastón.
Faith enabled Jacob, when dying, to give his blessing to each of the sons of Joseph, and ‘to bow himself in worship as he leant upon the top of his staff.’
22 Por fe en Dios, José, cuando se acercaba su hora de muerte también, habló sobre el éxodo de los israelitas, e instruyó sobre lo que debían hacer con sus huesos.
Faith caused Joseph, when his end was near, to speak of the future migration of the Israelites, and to give instructions with regard to his bones.
23 Por fe en Dios, los padres de Moisés lo ocultaron durante tres meses después de nacer. Reconocieron que era un niño especial. Y no temieron ir en contra de la orden que se había dado.
Faith caused the parents of Moses to hide the child for three months after his birth, for they saw that he was a beautiful child; and they would not respect the King’s order.
24 Por fe en Dios, Moisés, siendo ya adulto, se rehusó a ser conocido como el hijo adoptivo de la hija del Faraón.
It was faith that caused Moses, when he was grown up, to refuse the title of ‘Son of a Daughter of Pharaoh.’
25 Sino que prefirió participar de los sufrimientos del pueblo de Dios antes que disfrutar los placeres pasajeros del pecado.
He preferred sharing the hardships of God’s People to enjoying the short-lived pleasures of sin.
26 Y consideró que el rechazo que experimentaría por seguir a Cristo sería de mayor valor que la riqueza de Egipto, porque estaba concentrado en la recompensa que vendría.
For he counted ‘the reproaches that are heaped upon the Christ’ of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, looking forward, as he did, to the reward awaiting him.
27 Por fe en Dios, salió de Egipto y no tuvo temor de la ira del Faraón, sino que siguió adelante con sus ojos fijos en el Dios invisible.
Faith caused him to leave Egypt, though undaunted by the King’s anger, for he was strengthened in his endurance by the vision of the invisible God.
28 Por fe en Dios, Moisés observó la Pascua y la aspersión de la sangre en los dinteles, para que el ángel destructor no tocara a los israelitas.
Faith led him to institute the Passover and the Sprinkling of the Blood, so that the Destroyer might not touch the eldest children of the Israelites.
29 Por fe en Dios, los israelitas cruzaron en Mar Rojo como si caminaran por tierra seca. Y cuando los egipcios quisieron hacer lo mismo, murieron ahogados.
Faith enabled the people to cross the Red Sea, as if it had been dry land, while the Egyptians, when they attempted to do so, were drowned.
30 Por la fe en Dios, los israelitas marcharon alrededor de los muros de Jericó durante siete días, y los muros cayeron.
Faith caused the walls of Jericho to fall after being encircled for seven days.
31 Por fe en Dios, Rahab, la prostituta, no murió junto a los que rechazaban a Dios, porque había recibido a los espías israelitas en paz.
Faith saved Rahab, the prostitute, from perishing with the unbelievers, after she had entertained the spies with friendliness.
32 ¿Qué otro ejemplo podría mostrarles? El tiempo no me alcanza para hablar de Gedeón, Barac, Sansón, Jefté; o sobre David, Samuel y los profetas.
Need I add anything more? Time would fail me if I attempted to relate the stories of Gideon, Barak, Samson, and Jephthah, and those of David, Samuel, and the Prophets.
33 Ellos, por su fe en Dios conquistaron reinos, hicieron lo recto, recibieron las promesas de Dios, cerraron la boca de leones,
By their faith they subdued kingdoms, ruled righteously, gained the fulfilment of God’s promises, ‘shut the mouths of lions,’
34 apagaron incendios, escaparon de la muerte por espada, eran débiles pero se volvieron fuertes, lograron grandes cosas en guerras, y dirigieron ejércitos.
quelled the fury of the flames, escaped the edge of the sword, found strength in the hour of weakness, displayed their prowess in war, and routed hostile armies.
35 Muchas mujeres recibieron a sus familiares con vida por medio de la resurrección. Otros fueron torturados, al negarse a rechazar a Dios para ser perdonados, porque querían ser parte de una mejor resurrección.
Women received back their dead raised to life. Some were tortured on the wheel, and refused release in order that they might rise to a better life.
36 E incluso otros recibieron insultos y latigazos; y fueron encadenados y encarcelados.
Others had to face taunts and blows, and even chains and imprisonment.
37 Algunos fueron apedreados, tentados, muertos a espada. Algunos fueron vestidos con pieles de corderos y cabras: destituidos, oprimidos y maltratados.
They were stoned to death, they were tortured, they were swan asunder, they were put to the sword; they wandered about clothed in the skins of sheep or goats, destitute, persecuted, ill-used —
38 Les digo que el mundo no era digno de tener a tales personas errantes en los desiertos y montañas, viviendo en cuevas y en huecos debajo de la tierra.
men of whom the world was not worthy — roaming in lonely places, and on the mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.
39 Todas estas personas, aunque tenían la aprobación de Dios, no recibieron lo que Dios había prometido.
Yet, though they all won renown by their faith, they did not obtain the final fulfilment of God’s promise;
40 Él nos ha dado algo aún mejor, para que ellos no llegaran a la plenitud sin nosotros.
since God had in view some better thing for us, that they, apart from us, should not attain perfection.
