Eclesiastés 7
1 Una buena reputación es mejor que un perfume costoso, y el día de tu muerte es mejor que el día de tu nacimiento.
Better a name, than precious ointment, —and the day of death, than the day of one’s birth.
2 Es mejor ir a un funeral que a una fiesta. Al final, todo el mundo muere, y los que aún están vivos deberían pensar en ello.
Better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of banqueting, for, that, is the end of all men, —and, the living, should take it to his heart.
3 La pena es mejor que la risa, porque la tragedia nos ayuda a pensar.
Better is grief than laughter, —for, by the marring of the face, amended is the heart.
4 Los sabios piensan en el impacto de la muerte, mientras que los necios sólo piensan en divertirse.
The heart of the wise, is in the house of mourning, but, the heart of dullards, in the house of mirth.
5 Es mejor escuchar la crítica de un sabio que la canción de los necios.
Better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for any man to hear the song of dullards,
6 La risa de los necios es como el crujir de las ramas de espino que se queman debajo de una olla: sin sentido y que se extinguen rápidamente.
For, as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so, is the laughter of the dullard, —even this, then, was vanity.
7 Extorsionar a los demás convierte a los sabios en insensatos, y aceptar sobornos corrompe la mente.
For, oppression, maddeneth the wise, —and a bribe, destroyeth the understanding.
8 Terminar algo es mejor que empezarlo. Ser paciente es mejor que ser orgulloso.
Better the latter end of a thing, than the beginning thereof, —Better a patient spirit, than a haughty spirit.
9 No te apresures a enojarte, porque la ira controla la mente de los insensatos.
Do not be rash in thy spirit, to be indignant, —for, indignation, in the bosom of dullards, doth remain.
10 No preguntes: “¿Por qué los viejos tiempos eran mejores que ahora?”. Preguntar eso demuestra que no eres sabio.
Do not say, What hath happened, that, the former days, were better than these? for, not wisely, askest thou concerning this.
11 La sabiduría es buena, es como recibir una herencia. Beneficia a todos en la vida.
Good is wisdom, with an inheritance, —and a profit, to such as see the sun.
12 Porque la sabiduría trae seguridad, al igual que el dinero, pero la ventaja para los que tienen sabiduría es que se mantienen sanos y salvos.
For, a protection, is wisdom, and, a protection, is silver, —but, the advantage of knowledge, is, that, wisdom, giveth life to the possessors thereof.
13 Piensa en lo que hace Dios. Si él hace que algo se doble, ¡no podrás enderezarlo!
Consider the work of God, —for who can straighten what he hath bent?
14 En un buen día, alégrate. Cuando llegue un día malo, párate a pensar. Dios hizo cada día, de modo que no sabes lo que te sucederá después.
In the day of prosperity, be joyful, but, in the day of misfortune, consider, —Even the one equally with the other, hath God made, to the end man might find out—after him—nothing.
15 A lo largo de mi vida he visto muchas cosas que son difíciles de entender. Gente buena que muere joven a pesar de hacer lo correcto, y a la gente malvada que vive una larga vida de maldad.
Everything, had I seen, in my days of vanity, —Here was a righteous man, perishing in his righteousness, and there was a lawless man, continuing long in his wickedness.
16 No pienses que puedes hacer lo correcto con mucha observancia religiosa, y no pretendas ser tan sabio. ¿Quieres destruirte a ti mismo?
Do not become so very righteous, neither count thyself wise beyond measure, —wherefore shouldst thou destroy thyself?
17 Por otro lado, no te decidas a vivir una vida malvada, ¡no seas insensato! ¿Por qué morir antes de tiempo?
Do not be so very lawless, neither become thou foolish, —wherefore shouldst thou die, before thy time?
18 Debes tener en cuenta estas advertencias. Los que siguen a Dios estarán seguros de evitar ambas cosas.
It is well that thou shouldst lay fast hold of this, but, even from the other, do not withdraw thy hand, —for, he that revereth God, shall come forth out of them all.
19 La sabiduría da a una persona sabia más poder que diez consejeros de la ciudad.
Wisdom, bringeth more strength to a wise man, than ten heroes, that are in the city.
20 No hay una sola persona buena en todo el mundo que haga siempre lo correcto y no peque nunca.
For, as for men, there is none righteous in the earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 No te tomes a pecho todo lo que dice la gente, pues de lo contrario podrías oír a tu siervo hablar mal de ti,
Moreover, not to all the words which men speak, do thou apply thy heart, —lest thou hear thine own servant reviling thee!
22 ¡pues sabes cuántas veces tú mismo has hablado mal de los demás!
For truly, many times, thy heart knoweth, —that, even thou thyself, hast reviled others.
23 He examinado todo esto usando los principios de la sabiduría. Me dije: “Pensaré con sabiduría”. Pero la sabiduría se me escapó.
All this, have I proved by wisdom, —I said, I will be wise, but, that, was far from me.
24 Todo lo que existe está fuera de nuestro alcance, es demasiado profundo para nuestro entendimiento. ¿Quién puede comprenderlo?
Far away, is that which hath been, —and deep, deep, who can find it out?
25 Dirigí mis pensamientos a descubrir, investigar y averiguar más sobre la sabiduría y lo que tiene sentido. Quería saber más sobre lo estúpido que es el mal y lo ridículo que es ser un insensato.
Resolved, I, in my heart, to know and search out, and to seek wisdom, and a conclusion, —and to know lawlessness [to be] stupidity, and folly to be madness.
26 Descubrí algo más horrible que la muerte: una tontería como la mujer que trata de atraparte, que quiere usar su mente y sus manos para capturarte y atarte. Los que siguen a Dios no serán atrapados, pero los pecadores caerán en su trampa.
I, could indeed find, to be, more bitter than death, the woman, whose heart is, snares and nets, and her hands, bonds, —whoso is pleasing before God, shall escape from her, but, he that sinneth, shall be captured by her.
27 Esto es lo que descubrí después de sumar dos y dos juntos para intentar averiguar qué significaba todo aquello, dice el Maestro.
See! this, have I found, saith the Proclaimer [counting] one by one, to find a conclusion;
28 Aunque realmente busqué, no encontré lo que buscaba. La gente dice: “Encontré un hombre entre mil, pero ni una sola mujer”.
what my soul still sought, yet I found not, —one man out of a thousand, have I found, but, a woman among all these, have I not found.
29 Pero descubrí esto: Dios hizo al ser humano para hacer lo que es correcto, pero ellos han seguido sus propias ideas.
Only, see, this, have I found, That God made man upright, but, they, have sought out many devices.
