Nehemías 4
1 Cuando Sanballat se enteró de que estábamos edificando las murallas, montó en cólera, y enfurecido en extremo hizo mofa de los judíos.
Now it came to pass, when Sanaballat heard that we were building the wall, that it was grievous to him, and he was very angry, and railed against the Jews.
2 En presencia de sus hermanos y del ejército de Samaria se expresó de esta manera: “¿Qué hacen esos miserables judíos? ¿Se les ha permitido esto? ¿Ofrecerán sacrificios? ¿Quieren acaso terminar en un día? ¿Podrán acaso resucitar de entre los montones de escombros las piedras consumidas por el fuego?”
And he said before his brethren (that [is] the army of the Samaritans) [Is it true] that these Jews are building their city? do they indeed offer sacrifices? will they prevail? and will they this day restore the stones, after they have been burnt and made a heap of rubbish?
3 Tobías ammonita que estaba a su lado, dijo: “¡Déjalos edificar! Si una zorra se lanza al asalto, derribará su muralla de piedras.”
And Tobias the Ammanite came near to him, and said to them, Do they sacrifice or eat in their place? shall not a fox go up and pull down their wall of stones?
4 ¡Escucha, oh Dios nuestro! porque somos despreciados. Haz recaer sus insultos sobre su misma cabeza, y entrégalos al saqueo en una tierra de cautiverio.
Hear, O our God, for we have become a scorn; and return thou their reproach upon their head, and make them a scorn in a land of captivity,
5 No encubras su maldad, y no se borre ante Ti su pecado; pues te han irritado a la vista de los que están edificando.
and do not cover [their] iniquity.
6 Nosotros, empero, seguimos edificando la muralla; y quedó restaurada la muralla hasta la mitad; porque el pueblo se entusiasmó para trabajar.
7 Así que supieron Sanballat, Tobías, los árabes, los ammonitas y los asdoditas, que avanzaba la restauración de la muralla de Jerusalén y que comenzaban ya a cerrarse las brechas, se irritaron en gran manera;
But it came to pass, when Sanaballat and Tobia, and the Arabians, and the Ammanites, heard that the building of the walls of Jerusalem was advancing, [and] that the breaches began to be stopped, that it appeared very grievous to them.
8 y todos a una se coaligaron para venir a atacar a Jerusalén y causarle estorbos.
And all of them assembled together, to come to fight against Jerusalem, and to destroy it utterly.
9 Pero nosotros oramos a nuestro Dios y pusimos contra ellos guardias que de día y de noche (nos defendiesen) de ellos.
So we prayed to our God and set watchmen against them day and night, because of them.
10 Mas Judá decía: “Se debilita ya la fuerza de los cargadores, y quedan aún muchos escombros; no podremos seguir edificando la muralla.”
And Juda said, The strength of the enemies is broken, yet [there is] much rubbish, and we shall not be able to build the wall.
11 Y nuestros enemigos decían: “Nada sabrán, y nada verán, hasta que nosotros, penetrando en medio de ellos, los matemos y pongamos fin a la obra.”
And they that afflicted us said, They shall not know, and they shall not see, until we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
12 Venían también los judíos que moraban cerca de ellos, y nos decían esto hasta diez veces, de todos los lugares de donde llegaban a nosotros.
And it came to pass, when the Jews who lived near them came, that they said to us, They are coming up against us from every quarter.
13 Por eso aposté en las partes bajas, detrás de la muralla, donde había claros, al pueblo por familias, con sus espadas, sus lanzas y sus arcos.
So I set [men] in the lowest part of the place behind the wall in the lurking-places, I even set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14 Entonces miré, y levantándome dije a los nobles, a los magistrados y al resto del pueblo: “¡No los temáis! ¡Acordaos del Señor, grande y terrible, y luchad por vuestros hermanos, vuestros hijos y vuestras hijas, vuestras mujeres y vuestras casas!”
And I looked, and arose, and said to the nobles, and to the captains, and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them: remember our great and terrible God, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
15 Cuando supieron nuestros enemigos que estábamos advertidos y que Dios había desbaratado su propósito, volvimos todos a la muralla, cada cual a su trabajo.
And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was made known to us, and God had frustrated their counsel, that we all returned to the wall, [every] man to his work.
16 Desde aquel día la mitad de mi gente trabajaba en la obra, y la otra mitad estaba sobre las armas, con las lanzas, los escudos, los arcos y las lorigas, y los jefes estaban detrás de toda la casa de Judá.
And it came to pass from that day [that] half of them that had been driven forth, wrought the work, and half of them kept guard; and [there were] spears, and shields, and bows, and breast-plates, and rulers behind the whole house of Juda,
17 Los que edificaban la muralla, y los que llevaban cargas, así como quienes las cargaban, con una mano trabajaban en la obra, y con la otra empuñaban el arma.
even of them that were building the wall: —and those who carried the burdens [were] under arms: [each] with one hand wrought his work, and with the other held his dart.
18 Los que edificaban, tenían cada cual su espada ceñida a sus lomos, mientras edificaban; y el que tocaba la trompeta estaba a mi lado.
And the builders [wrought] each man having his sword girt upon his loins, and so they built: and the trumpeter with his trumpet next to him.
19 Dije entonces a los nobles, a los magistrados y al resto del pueblo: “La obra es grande y muy extensa, y nosotros estamos dispersos sobre la muralla, lejos unos de otros.
And I said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work [is] great and abundant, and we are dispersed upon the wall, each at a great distance from his brother.
20 Dondequiera, pues, que oyereis la voz de la trompeta, allí reuníos con nosotros; nuestro Dios combatirá por nosotros.”
In whatsoever place ye shall hear the sound of the cornet, thither gather yourselves together to us; and our God shall fight for us.
21 Así seguimos trabajando en la obra, mientras la mitad empuñaba la lanza, desde el despuntar de la aurora hasta la salida de las estrellas.
So we [continued] labouring at the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.
22 En este tiempo di al pueblo también esta orden: “Cada uno con su criado pase la noche en Jerusalén; así nos servirán de guardia por la noche, y de día (trabajarán) en la obra.”
And at that time I said to the people, Lodge ye every man with his servant in the midst of Jerusalem, and let the night be a watch-time to you, and the day a work-time.
23 Ni yo, ni mis hermanos, ni mis criados, ni la gente de guardia que me seguía, nos quitábamos los vestidos; cada uno llevaba su arma (aun yendo al) agua.
And I was [there], and the watchmen behind me, and there was not a man of us that put off his garments.
