Nehemías 13

1 En aquel tiempo, con motivo de la lectura del Libro de Moisés delante del pueblo, hallaron escrito allí que los ammonitas y los moabitas no habían de entrar jamás en la congregación de Dios;

On that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and it was found written in it that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

2 porque no fueron al encuentro de los hijos de Israel con pan y agua, antes bien sobornaron contra ellos a Balaam, para que los maldijera, aunque nuestro Dios trocó la maldición en bendición.

because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them; however, our God turned the curse into a blessing.

3 Cuando oyeron esta ley, separaron de Israel a todos los extranjeros.

It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel.

4 Antes de esto, el sacerdote Eliasib, intendente de las cámaras de la Casa de Dios y pariente cercano de Tobías,

Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,

5 había hecho para este un gran aposento donde antes se depositaban las ofrendas, el incienso, los utensilios, los diezmos del trigo, del vino y del aceite, la porción legal de los levitas, cantores y porteros, y las ofrendas para los sacerdotes.

had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the wave offerings for the priests.

6 En todo ese tiempo yo no estaba en Jerusalén; porque el año treinta y dos de Artajerjes, rey de Babilonia, volví al rey. Mas pasado cierto tiempo, pedí licencia al rey,

But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king,

7 y vine a Jerusalén, donde supe el mal que había hecho Eliasib, en favor de Tobías, haciéndole un aposento en los atrios de la Casa de Dios.

and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.

8 Tuve gran pena, y eché fuera de la cámara todos los muebles de la habitación de Tobías.

It grieved me severely. Therefore I threw all Tobiah’s household stuff out of the room.

9 Después mandé que purificasen las cámaras, y volví a poner allí los utensilios de la Casa de Dios, las ofrendas y el incienso.

Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms. I brought into them the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense again.

10 Supe también que los levitas no habían recibido las porciones, y que tanto los levitas como los cantores, que hacían el servicio, se habían huido cada cual a su campo.

I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had each fled to his field.

11 Por eso disputé con los magistrados, y dije: “¿Por qué se ha abandonado la Casa de Dios?” Y reuní a los (fugitivos) y los restablecí en su puesto.

Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

12 Entonces todo Judá trajo el diezmo del trigo, del vino y del aceite a los almacenes,

Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the treasuries.

13 cuya administración confié a Selemías sacerdote, a Sadoc escriba y a Fedaías, uno de los levitas, a cuyo lado estaba Hanán, hijo de Zacur, hijo de Matanías; porque ellos tenían fama de ser fieles y era de su cargo repartir las porciones entre sus hermanos.

I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.

14 ¡Acuérdate por esto de mí, oh Dios mío, y no borres mis obras piadosas que he hecho por la Casa de mi Dios y por su culto!

Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances.

15 En aquellos días vi en Judá que algunos pisaban los lagares en sábado, traían gavillas, ponían cargas sobre los asnos, también vino, uvas e higos, y toda suerte de cargas que introducían en Jerusalén en día de sábado. Les hice una advertencia en el mismo día en que vendían los productos.

In those days I saw some men treading wine presses on the Sabbath in Judah, bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food.

16 Del mismo modo los tirios que vivían en (Jerusalén) traían pescado y toda suerte de mercaderías, vendiéndolas en sábado a los hijos de Judá y en Jerusalén.

Some men of Tyre also lived there, who brought in fish and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

17 Por lo cual reprendí a los magistrados de Judá, y les dije: “¿Qué acción mala es esta que hacéis, profanando así el sábado?

Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?

18 ¿No hicieron esto nuestros padres, y por eso nuestro Dios hizo venir este mal sobre nosotros y sobre esta ciudad? Vosotros estáis acumulando ira contra Israel, profanando el sábado.”

Didn’t your fathers do this, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

19 Entonces al caer la obscuridad sobre las puertas de Jerusalén, antes del sábado, mandé que se cerraran las puertas, y que no fueran abiertas hasta después del sábado; y aposté a algunos de mis criados a las puertas, para que no entrase carga alguna en día de sábado.

It came to pass that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, so that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

20 Así los negociantes y vendedores de toda clase de mercadería pasaron la noche una o dos veces fuera de Jerusalén.

So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares camped outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

21 Yo les hice advertencia y les dije: “¿Por qué pasáis la noche delante del muro? Si otra vez lo hacéis, voy a prenderos.” Desde entonces no vinieron más en sábado.

Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

22 Mandé también a los levitas que se purificasen, y viniesen a guardar las puertas, a fin de santificar el día de sábado. ¡Acuérdate de mí, oh Dios mío, también por esto, y ten piedad de mí según tu gran misericordia!

I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me for this also, my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.

23 En ese mismo tiempo vi también a judíos que habían tomado mujeres asdoditas, ammonitas y moabitas.

In those days I also saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab;

24 Sus hijos hablaban medio asdodeo y no sabían hablar judío, sino que seguían el lenguaje de uno y otro pueblo.

and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

25 Yo los reprendí y los maldije; golpeé a algunos de ellos y les arranqué el cabello, y los conjuré por Dios (diciendo): “No deis vuestras hijas a los hijos de ellos, ni toméis sus hijas para vuestros hijos ni para vosotros.

I contended with them, cursed them, struck certain of them, plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

26 ¿No pecó en esto mismo Salomón, rey de Israel? Y sin embargo, entre todas las naciones no hubo rey como él; era amado de su Dios y Dios le hizo rey sobre todo Israel; y con todo aun a él le hicieron prevaricar las mujeres extranjeras.

Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet amongst many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.

27 ¿Hemos acaso de acomodarnos a vosotros, que hacéis esta tan grande maldad de pecar contra nuestro Dios, tomando mujeres extranjeras?”

Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?”

28 Uno de los hijos de Joiadá, hijo de Eliasib, Sumo Sacerdote, era yerno de Sanballat horonita: por eso le eché de mi presencia.

One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.

29 ¡Ácuérdate de ellos, oh Dios mío, para castigarlos por las profanaciones del sacerdocio y del pacto del sacerdocio y de los levitas!

Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.

30 De esta manera los limpié de todo lo extranjero, ordenando las funciones de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, de cada uno según su ministerio,

Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;

31 y también lo que se refiere a la ofrenda de la leña en los tiempos determinados, y lo tocante a las primicias. ¡Acuérdate de mí, oh Dios mío, para (mi) bien!

and for the wood offering, at appointed times, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
