1 Abimelec, hijo de Jerobaal, se fue a Siquem y habló a los hermanos de su madre, a ellos y a toda la parentela de la casa del padre de su madre, en los siguientes términos:
And Abimelech son of Jerobaal went to Sychem to his mother's brethren; and he spoke to them and to all the kindred of the house of his mother's father, saying,
2 “Decid, os ruego, al oído de todos los vecinos de Siquem: “¿Qué es mejor para vosotros: el que reinen sobre vosotros setenta hombres, hijos todos ellos de Jerobaal, o que reine sobre vosotros uno solo? Acordaos también de que yo soy hueso vuestro y carne vuestra.”
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Sychem, saying, Which [is] better for you, that seventy men, even all the sons of Jerobaal, should reign over you, or that one man should reign over you? and remember that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 Repitieron los hermanos de su madre todas estas palabras referentes a él, de modo que las oyeron todos los vecinos de Siquem, y se inclinó el corazón de ellos hacia Abimelec; pues decían: “Es nuestro hermano.”
And his mother's brethren spoke concerning him in the ears of all the men of Sychem all these words; and their heart turned after Abimelech, for they said, He is our brother.
4 Y le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-Berit, con los cuales Abimelec tomó a sueldo hombres ociosos y aventureros que le siguieron.
And they gave him seventy [pieces] of silver out of the house of Baalberith; and Abimelech hired for himself vain and cowardly men, and they went after him.
5 Y llegó a Ofrá, a la casa de su padre, y mató a sus hermanos, los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta hombres, sobre una misma piedra. Solo pudo escapar Joatam, el hijo menor de Jerobaal, porque se escondió.
And he went to the house of his father to Ephratha, and killed his brethren the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men upon one stone; but Joatham the youngest son of Jerobaal was left, for he hid himself.
6 Entonces se reunieron todos los vecinos de Siquem y todos los de Bet-Meló y fueron a proclamar rey a Abimelec, junto al terebinto del santuario que está en Siquem.
And all the men of Sicima, and all the house of Bethmaalo, were gathered together, and they went and made Abimelech king by the oak of Sedition, which was at Sicima.
7 Habiéndolo oído Joatam, se fue y apostándose en la cumbre del monte Garizim, alzó su voz y les dijo a gritos: “Oídme, señores de Siquem, para que os oiga Dios.
And it was reported to Joatham, and he went and stood on the top of mount Garizin, and lifted up his voice, and wept, and said to them, Hear me, you men of Sicima, and God shall hear you.
8 Fueron una vez los árboles a ungir un rey que reinase sobre ellos; y dijeron al olivo: «Reina tú sobre nosotros».
The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive, Reign over us.
9 El olivo les contestó: «¿Puedo acaso yo dejar mi grosura, con la cual se honra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?»
But the olives said to them, Shall I leave my fatness, with which men shall glorify God, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10 Entonces dijeron los árboles a la higuera: «Ven tú y reina sobre nosotros».
And the trees said to the fig tree, Come, reign over us.
11 La higuera les respondió: «¿He de dejar acaso mi dulzura y mi excelente fruto, para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?»
But the fig tree said to them, Shall I leave my sweetness an my good fruits, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12 Dijeron, pues, los árboles a la vid: «Ven tú y reina sobre nosotros».
And the trees said to the vine, Come, reign over us.
13 Mas la vid les respondió: «¿He de dejar acaso mi vino que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?»
And the vine said to them, Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men, and go to be promoted over the trees?
14 Entonces todos los árboles dijeron a la zarza: «Ven tú y reina sobre nosotros».
Then all the trees said to the bramble, Come you and [reign] over us.
15 Respondió la zarza a los árboles: «Si es que en verdad queréis ungirme rey sobre vosotros, venid y refugiaos bajo mi sombra; y si no, salga fuego de la zarza que devore los cedros del Líbano».
And the bramble said to the trees, If you in truth anoint me to reign over you, come, stand under my shadow; and if not, let fire come out from me and devour the cedars of Libanus.
16 Ahora, pues, (preguntaos) si habéis obrado fiel y justamente haciendo rey a Abimelec, y si os habéis portado bien con Jerobaal y su casa, y si le habéis tratado como lo merecía la obra de sus manos;
And now, if you have done it in truth and integrity, and have made Abimelech king, and if you have wrought well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and if you have done to him according to the reward of his hand,
17 pues mi padre peleó por vosotros, exponiendo su vida a los mayores peligros, y os libró del poder de Madián;
as my father fought for you, and put his life in jeopardy, and delivered you out of the hand of Madiam;
18 pero vosotros os habéis levantado hoy contra la casa de mi padre; habéis matado a sus hijos, setenta hombres, sobre una misma piedra, y habéis puesto a Abimelec, hijo de una esclava suya, por rey sobre los vecinos de Siquem, por ser él vuestro hermano.
and you are risen up this day against the house of my father, and have slain his sons, being seventy men, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech the son of his bondwoman king over the men of Sicima, because he is your brother:
19 Si pues en este día habéis obrado fiel y justamente con Jerobaal y con su casa, complaceos en Abimelec, y complázcase él en vosotros.
if then you have done truly and faithfully with Jerobaal, and with his house this day, rejoice you in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice over you:
20 Pero si no, salga fuego de Abimelec, fuego que devore a los vecinos de Siquem y de Bet-Meló, y salga fuego de los vecinos de Siquem y de Bet-Meló, que devore a Abimelec.”
but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Sicima, and the house of Bethmaalo; and let fire come out from the men of Sicima and from the house of Bethmaalo, and devour Abimelech.
21 Luego Joatam emprendió la huida, y huyendo se fue a Beer donde habitó por temor de su hermano Abimelec.
And Joatham fled, and ran away, and went as far as Baeer, and lived there out of the way of his brother Abimelech.
22 Reinó Abimelec tres años sobre Israel.
And Abimelech reigned over Israel three years.
23 Entonces envió Dios un espíritu maligno entre Abimelec y los vecinos de Siquem, y los vecinos de Siquem se portaron pérfidamente con Abimelec;
And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Sicima; and the men of Sicima dealt treacherously with the house of Abimelech:
24 para que se vengase el crimen hecho contra los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y para que su sangre cayese sobre Abimelec su hermano, que los mató, y también sobre los vecinos de Siquem, que le habían ayudado a matar a sus hermanos.
to bring the injury done to the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and to lay their blood upon their brother Abimelech, who killed them, and upon the men of Sicima, because they strengthened his hands to kill his brethren.
25 Los vecinos de Siquem le pusieron emboscadas sobre las cimas de las montañas, para despojar a cuantos pasaban por el camino junto a ellos. Esto llegó al conocimiento de Abimelec.
And the men of Sicima set liers in wait against him on the top of the mountains, and robbed every one who passed by them on the way; and it was reported to the king Abimelech.
26 Entre tanto llegó Gáal, hijo de Ebed, con sus hermanos, y entraron en Siquem, y los siquemitas pusieron en él su confianza.
And Gaal son of Jobel came, and his brethren, and passed by Sicima, and the men of Sicima trusted in him.
27 Salieron al campo, vendimiaron sus viñas y pisaron (las uvas), haciendo gran fiesta; luego entraron en la casa de su dios, y mientras comían y bebían, maldecían a Abimelec.
And they went out into the field, and gathered their grapes, and trod them, and made merry; and they brought [the grapes] into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
28 Dijo entonces Gáal, hijo de Ebed: “¿Quién es Abimelec, y quién es Siquem, para que le sirvamos? ¿No es el hijo de Jerobaal, y no es Zebul su lugarteniente? Servid a los hombres de Hemor, padre de Siquem. ¿Por qué hemos de servir nosotros (a Abimelec)?
And Gaal the son of Jobel said, Who is Abimelech, and who is the son of Sychem, that we should serve him? [Is he] not the son of Jerobaal, and [is] not Zebul his steward, his servant with the son of Emmor the father of Sychem? and why should we serve him?
29 ¡Ojalá estuviera este pueblo bajo mi mando! Yo expulsaría a Abimelec.” Y envió a decir a Abimelec: “Refuerza tu ejército y sal.”
And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech, and I would say to him, Multiply your host, and come out.
30 Cuando Zebul, comandante de la ciudad, oyó las palabras de Gáal, hijo de Ebed, montó en cólera,
And Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Jobel, and he was very angry.
31 y enviando secretamente mensajeros a Abimelec le dijo: “Mira que Gáal, hijo de Ebed, y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem, y he aquí que ellos están sublevando la ciudad contra ti.
And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Jobel and his brethren are come to Sychem; and behold, they have besieged the city against you.
32 Levántate de noche, tú y la gente que tienes contigo, y ponte en emboscada en el campo,
And now rise up by night, you and the people with you, and lay wait in the field.
33 y por la mañana, al salir el sol, levántate pronto y cae sobre la ciudad; cuando él y la gente que está con él salgan contra ti, podrás hacer con él según la fuerza de tu mano.
And it shall come to pass in the morning at sunrising, you shall rise up early and draw toward the city; and behold, he and the people with him will come forth against you, and you shall do to him according to your power.
34 Abimelec se levantó de noche, él y toda la gente que le acompañaba, y divididos en cuatro compañías se pusieron en emboscada contra Siquem.
And Abimelech and all the people with him rose up by night, and formed an ambuscade against Sychem in four companies.
35 Y cuando Gáal, Hijo de Ebed, salió y se apostó a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, salió Abimelec de la emboscada con la gente que tenía consigo.
And Gaal the son of Jobel went forth, and stood by the door of the gate of the city: and Abimelech and the people with him rose up from the ambuscade.
36 Viendo Gáal la gente, dijo a Zebul: “He aquí gente que baja de las cimas de los montes.” Zebul le contesto: “Lo que ves es la sombra de los montes, y te parecen hombres.”
And Gaal the son of Jobel saw the people, and said to Zebul, Behold, a people comes down from the top of the mountains: and Zebul said to him, You see the shadow of the mountains as men.
37 Gáal volvió a hablar, diciendo: “Mira que baja gente del ombligo del país y una compañía viene de la encina de los adivinos.”
And Gaal continued to speak and said, Behold, a people comes down westward from the part bordering on the middle of the land, and another company comes by the way of Helon Maonenim.
38 Entonces dijo Zebul: “¿Dónde está ahora tu boca, con que dijiste: Quién es Abimelec, para que le sirvamos? ¿No es esta la gente que despreciaste? Sal, pues, ahora y pelea contra ellos.
And Zebul said to him, And where is your mouth as you spoke, Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? [Is] not this the people whom you despised? go forth now, and set the battle in array against him.
39 Salió Gáal, a la vista de los vecinos de Siquem, y dio batalla a Abimelec.
And Gaal went forth before the men of Sychem, and set the battle in array against Abimelech.
40 Y Abimelec le persiguió, porque, huyó delante de él, y cayeron muchos traspasados hasta la entrada de la puerta.
And Abimelech pursued him, and he fled from before him; and many fell down slain as far as the door of the gate.
41 Abimelec permaneció en Arumá; y Zebul expulsó a Gáal y a sus hermanos de modo que no pudieron quedarse en Siquem.
And Abimelech entered into Arema, and Zebul cast out Gaal and his brethren, so that they should not dwell in Sychem.
42 Al día siguiente salió el pueblo al campo; de lo cual avisado Abimelec,
And it came to pass on the second day that the people went out into the field, and [one] brought word to Abimelech.
43 tomó su gente, la dividió en tres compañías y los puso en emboscada en el campo; y cuando vio que la gente salía de la ciudad, se levantó contra ellos para derrotarlos.
And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and formed an ambush in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people went forth out of the city, and he rose up against them, and struck them.
44 Abimelec y el destacamento que le seguía, avanzaron y se apostaron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, en tanto que las otras dos compañías se lanzaron sobre todos los que estaban en el campo y los destrozaron.
And Abimelech and the chiefs of companies that were with him rushed forward, and stood by the door of the gate of the city; and the two [other] companies rushed forward upon all that were in the field, and struck them.
45 Abimelec asaltó la ciudad todo aquel día, la tomó y mató la gente que había en ella. Después arrasó la ciudad, y la sembró de sal.
And Abimelech fought against the city all that day, and took the city, and killed the people that were in it, and destroyed the city, and sowed it with salt.
46 Al oír esto, todos los hombres de la torre de Siquem se refugiaron en la fortaleza del templo de El-Berit.
And all the men of the tower of Sychem heard, and came to the gathering of Baethel-berith.
47 Cuando Abimelec supo que allí se habían reunido todos los hombres de la torre de Siquem,
And it was reported to Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Sychem were gathered together.
48 subió al monte Salmón, él y toda la gente que le seguía; y tomando un hacha en su mano, cortó la rama de un árbol, la alzó, se la puso al hombro y mandó a la gente que le acompañaba: “Lo que me habéis visto hacer, haced pronto igual que yo.”
And Abimelech went up to the mount of Selmon, and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a branch of a tree, and took it, and laid it on his shoulders; and said to the people that were with him, What you see me doing, do quickly as I.
49 Y cortó también toda la gente cada cual una rama, y siguiendo tras Abimelec, las colocaron sobre la fortaleza, a la cual pegaron fuego, cubriéndolos con llamas, y así murió también toda la gente de la torre de Siquem, unos mil hombres y mujeres.
And they cut down likewise even every man a branch, and went after Abimelech, and laid them against the place of gathering, and burnt the place of gathering over them with fire; and they died, even all the men of the tower of Sicima, about a thousand men and women.
50 Después marchó Abimelec a Tebes, la asedió y la tomó.
And Abimelech went out of Baethel-berith, and encamped against Thebes, and took it.
51 Mas había en medio de la ciudad una torre fuerte, adonde se habían refugiado todos los hombres y las mujeres, y todos los vecinos de la ciudad; y cerrando tras sí subieron al terrado de la torre.
And there was a strong tower in the midst of the city; and there all the men and the women of the city fled, and shut [the door] without them, and went up on the roof of the tower.
52 Avanzó Abimelec hasta la torre y la asaltó; mas cuando había llegado ya hasta la puerta de la torre para incendiarla,
And Abimelech drew near to the tower, and they besieged it; and Abimelech drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 arrojó una mujer la piedra superior de un molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec, y le rompió el cráneo.
And a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull.
54 Llamó él en seguida al joven, su escudero, y le dijo: “Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no digan de mí: le mató una mujer.” Le traspasó entonces el joven, y así murió.
And he cried out quickly to the young man his armor-bearer, and said to him, Draw your sword, and kill me, lest at any time they should say, A woman killed him: and his young man thrust him through and he died.
55 Cuando vieron los hombres de Israel que había muerto Abimelec, se fueron, cada cual a su lugar.
And the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead; and they went each to his place.
56 Así retribuyó Dios a Abimelec el mal que había hecho contra su padre matando a sus setenta hermanos.
So God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he wrought against his father, in slaying his seventy brethren.
57 También sobre la cabeza de los hombres de Siquem hizo Dios caer todo el mal que habían hecho. Así se cumplió en ellos la maldición de Joatam, hijo de Jerobaal.
And all the wickedness of the men of Sychem God requited upon their head; and the curse of Joatham the son of Jerobaal came upon them.
