Jeremías 5
1 Recorred las calles de Jerusalén, mirad y observad, y buscad por sus plazas, a ver si halláis un hombre; uno solo que practique la justicia y busque la verdad; y Yo la perdonaré.
Run you about in the streets of Jerusalem, and see, and know, and seek in her broad places, if you can find [one], if there is any one that does judgment, and seeks faithfulness; and I will pardon them, says the Lord.
2 Pues aun cuando dicen: ¡Vive Yahvé!, no obstante ello juran en falso.
The Lord lives, they say; do they not therefore swear falsely?
3 ¿No es la fidelidad, oh Yahvé, lo que buscan tus ojos? Tú los castigaste, y no les dolió; los consumiste, mas rechazaron la corrección; han hecho su cara más dura que la roca; no quisieron convertirse.
O Lord, your eyes are upon faithfulness: you have scourged them, but they have not grieved; you have consumed them; but they would not receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; and they would not return.
4 Entonces dije: “¡Ah! son solo los pobres, ellos son los insensatos, porque no conocen el camino de Yahvé, la ley de su Dios.
Then I said, It may be they are poor; for they are weak, for they know not the way of the Lord, or the judgment of God.
5 Me iré a los grandes, y hablaré con ellos; ellos conocerán el camino de Yahvé, la ley de su Dios”. Pero también ellos todos quebraron el yugo y rompieron las coyundas.
I will go to the rich men, and will speak to them; for they have known the way of the Lord, and the judgment of God: but, behold, with one consent they have broken the yoke, they have burst the bonds.
6 Por eso los mata el león del bosque, los devora el lobo del desierto; y el leopardo está acechando en torno de sus ciudades; quien salga de ellas será despedazado: porque son muchos sus pecados y han aumentado sus apostasías.
Therefore has a lion out of the forest struck them, and a wolf has destroyed them even to [their] houses, and a leopard has watched against their cities: all that go forth from them shall be hunted: for they have multiplied their ungodliness, they have strengthened themselves in their revoltings.
7 “¿Cómo te podré perdonar esto? Tus hijos me han abandonado y juran por los que no son dioses: Los he saciado, mas ellos se entregan al adulterio, y se juntan en casa de la ramera.
In what [way] shall I forgive you for these things? Your sons have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: and I fed them to the full, and they committed adultery, and lodged in harlots' houses.
8 Caballos gordos que están en celo; relincha cada cual tras la mujer de su prójimo.
They became as wanton horses: they neighed each one after his neighbor's wife.
9 ¿No he de castigar Yo esto? dice Yahvé. ¿De una nación como esta no he de tomar venganza?
Shall I not visit for these things? says the Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this.
10 Escalad sus muros, y destruid; mas no acabéis del todo con ellos; arrancad sus sarmientos, pues no son de Yahvé.
Go up upon her battlements, and break [them] down; but make not a full end: leave her buttresses: for they are the Lord's.
11 Porque la casa de Israel y la casa de Judá han apostatado de Mí, dice Yahvé.
For the house of Israel have indeed dealt treacherously against me, says the Lord: the house of Juda also
12 Han renegado de Yahvé, y han dicho: “No es Él; no vendrá sobre nosotros ningún mal, no veremos ni espada ni hambre;
have lied to their Lord, and they have said, These things are not so; no evils shall come upon us; and we shall not see sword or famine.
13 los profetas no son más que viento, y no tienen oráculos (de Dios). ¡Que estos caigan sobre ellos mismos!”
Our prophets became wind, and the word of the Lord was not in them.
14 Por esto, así dice Yahvé, el Dios de los ejércitos: “Por cuanto habéis dicho esto, mirad que hago de mis palabras un fuego, y este pueblo será la leña que los devore.
Therefore thus says the Lord Almighty, Because you have spoken this word, behold, I have made my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 He aquí que voy a traer contra vosotros, oh casa de Israel, una nación lejana, dice Yahvé; un pueblo fuerte, un pueblo antiquísimo; un pueblo cuya lengua no conoces, y cuyas palabras no entiendes.
Behold, I [will] bring upon you a nation from far, O house of Israel, says the Lord; a nation the sound of whose language one shall not understand.
16 Su aljaba es como sepulcro abierto; todos ellos son hombres valientes.
[They are] all mighty men:
17 Devorarán tu cosecha y tu pan; devorarán a tus hijos y a tus hijas; devorarán tus rebaños y tus ganados; devorarán tus viñas y tus olivares; y destruirán a espada tus ciudades fuertes en que confías.
and they shall devour your harvest, and your bread; and shall devour your sons, and your daughters; and they shall devour your sheep, and your calves, and devour your vineyards, and your fig-plantations, and your olive yards: and they shall utterly destroy your strong cities, wherein you trusted, with the sword.
18 Mas ni aun en aquellos días, dice Yahvé, acabaré del todo con vosotros.”
And it shall come to pass in those days, says the Lord your God, that I will not utterly destroy you.
19 Y si os preguntareis: “¿Por qué Yahvé, nuestro Dios, ha traído todo esto sobre nosotros?” les responderás: “Como me habéis dejado a Mí sirviendo a dioses extraños en vuestra tierra así serviréis a los extranjeros en tierra no vuestra.”
And it shall come to pass, when you shall say, Therefore has the Lord our God done all these things to us? that you shall say to them, Because you served strange gods in your land, so shall you serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
20 Promulgad esto en la casa de Jacob, y pregonadlo en Judá, diciendo:
Proclaim these things to the house of Jacob, and let them be heard in the house of Juda.
21 “Escucha esto, pueblo insensato y sin cordura: Tienen ojos y no ven, tienen oídos y no oyen.
Hear you now these things, O foolish and senseless people; who have eyes, and see not; and have ears, and hear not:
22 ¿No me habéis de temer?, dice Yahvé; ¿no temblaréis delante de Mí, que puse al mar por término la arena, como límite perpetuo que no puede traspasar? Por más que se agiten sus olas, son impotentes, aunque se enfurezcan no podrán rebasarlo.”
will you not be afraid of me? says the Lord; and will you not fear before me, who have set the sand for a bound to the sea, [as] a perpetual ordinance, and it shall not pass it: yes, it shall rage, but not prevail; and its waves shall roar, but not pass over it.
23 Mas este pueblo tiene un corazón rebelde y contumaz; han apostatado y se van.
But this people has a disobedient and rebellious heart; and they have turned aside and gone back:
24 Y no dicen en su corazón: “Temamos a Yahvé, nuestro Dios, que nos da a su tiempo la lluvia temprana y la tardía, y nos concede las semanas destinadas a la cosecha.”
and they have not said in their heart, Let us fear now the Lord our God, who gives us the early and latter rain, according to the season of the fulfillment of the ordinance of harvest, and has preserved [it] for us.
25 Vuestras iniquidades han trastornado este orden, y vuestros pecados os han privado del bien.
Your transgressions have turned away these things, and your sins have removed good things from you.
26 Pues en mi pueblo hay malvados; ponen asechanzas como el pajarero que se agacha, arman trampas para cazar hombres.
For among my people were found ungodly men; and they have set snares to destroy men, and have caught [them].
27 Como jaula llena de pájaros, así están sus casas llenas de fraude; así se han engrandecido y enriquecido.
As a snare which has been set is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore have they grown great, and become rich:
28 Engordaron y brillan de gordura; sobresalen en maldad; no hacen justicia al huérfano —y sin embargo prosperan—, no hacen justicia a los pobres.
and they have transgressed [the rule of] judgment; they have not judged the cause of the orphan, nor have they judged the cause of the widow.
29 ¿Y Yo no habré de castigar estas cosas? dice Yahvé. ¿De una nación como esta no he de tomar venganza?
Shall I not visit for these things? says the Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30 Cosa extraña y terrible acontece en la tierra:
Shocking and horrible deeds have been done on the land;
31 los profetas profetizan mentira, y los sacerdotes gobiernan según su antojo; y esto le gusta a mi pueblo. Pero ¿qué haréis cuando estas cosas lleguen a su fin?
the prophets utter unrighteous prophecies, and the priests have clapped their hands: and my people has loved [to have it] thus: and what will you do for the future.
