Génesis 11
1 Tenía la tierra entera una misma lengua y las mismas palabras.
At first, all the people in [MTY] the world spoke the same language [DOU].
2 Mas cuando (los hombres) emigrando desde el Oriente hallaron una llanura en la tierra de Sinear, donde se establecieron,
As people moved further east, they arrived at a plain in Babylonia region and began to live there.
3 se dijeron unos a otros: “Vamos, fabriquemos ladrillos, y cozámoslos bien.” Y les sirvió el ladrillo en lugar de piedra, y el betún les sirvió de argamasa.
Then they said to each other, “(Hey/Come on), let’s form bricks and bake them to make them hard, for building!” So they used bricks instead of stones, and used tar instead of (mortar/a mixture of cement, sand and lime) to hold them together.
4 Y dijeron, pues: “Vamos, edifiquémonos una ciudad y una torre, cuya cumbre llegue hasta el cielo; hagámonos un monumento para que no nos dispersemos sobre la superficie de toda la tierra.”
They said, “Hey, let’s build a city for ourselves! We also ought to build a very high tower that reaches up to the sky! In that way we will become famous! If we do not do this, we will be scattered all over the earth!”
5 Pero Yahvé descendió a ver la ciudad y la torre que estaban construyendo los hijos de los hombres.
So they began to build the city and the tower. Then Yahweh looked down and saw the city and the tower that those [puny] men were building.
6 Y dijo Yahvé: “He aquí que son un solo pueblo y tienen todos una misma lengua. ¡Y esto es solo el comienzo de sus obras! Ahora, nada les impedirá realizar sus propósitos.
Yahweh said, “These people are one group that all speak the same language. If they have begun to do this now, then (there is nothing that they will decide to do that will be impossible for them/they will be able to do whatever they decide to do) [LIT]!
7 Ea, pues, descendamos, y confundamos allí mismo su lengua, de modo que no entienda uno el habla del otro.”
So, okay/now, we will go down there and cause there to be many different languages, so that they will not be able to understand each other.”
8 Así los dispersó Yahvé de allí por la superficie de toda la tierra; y cesaron de edificar la ciudad.
So Yahweh did that. As a result, the people stopped building the city, and Yahweh caused them to disperse all over the earth.
9 Por tanto se le dio el nombre de Babel; porque allí confundió Yahvé la lengua de toda la tierra; y de allí los dispersó Yahvé sobre la faz de todo el orbe.
The city was called Babel which means ‘confusion’, because there Yahweh caused the people to become confused because the people [MTY] spoke [different languages that the others could not understand], not just one language. From there Yahweh caused them to disperse all over the earth.
10 Estos son los descendientes de Sem. Sem tenía cien años cuando engendró a Arfaxad, dos años después del diluvio.
(This is a bigger list/I will now tell you more) of the descendants of Shem: Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arpachshad.
11 Vivió Sem, después de haber engendrado a Arfaxad, quinientos años; y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Arpachshad was born, Shem lived 500 more years and had more sons and daughters.
12 Arfaxad tenía treinta y cinco cuando engendró a Sálah.
When Arphachshad was 35 years old, he became the father of Shelah.
13 Y vivió Arfaxad, después de haber engendrado a Sálah, cuatrocientos tres años; y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Shelah was born, Arpachshad lived 403 more years and became the father of more sons and daughters.
14 Sálah tenía treinta años cuando engendró a Éber.
When Shelah was 30 years old, he became the father of Eber.
15 Y vivió Sálah, después de haber engendrado a Éber, cuatrocientos tres años; y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Eber was born, Shelah lived 403 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
16 Éber tenía treinta y cuatro años cuando engendró a Fáleg.
When Eber was 34 years old, he became the father of Peleg.
17 Y vivió Éber, después de engendrar a Fáleg, cuatrocientos treinta años; y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Peleg was born, Eber lived 430 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
18 Fáleg tenía treinta años cuando engendró a Reú.
When Peleg was 30 years old, he became the father of Reu.
19 Y vivió Fáleg, después de haber engendrado a Reú, doscientos nueve años; y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Reu was born, Peleg lived 209 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
20 Reú tenía treinta y dos años cuando engendró a Sarug.
When Reu was 32 years old, he became the father of Serug.
21 Y vivió Reú, después de haber engendrado a Sarug, doscientos siete años; y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Serug was born, Reu lived 207 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
22 Sarog tenía treinta años cuando engendró a Nacor.
When Serug was 30 years old, he became the father of Nahor.
23 Y vivió Sarug, después de haber engendrado a Nacor, doscientos años y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Nahor was born, Serug lived 200 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
24 Nacor tenía veinte y nueve años cuando engendró a Táreh.
When Nahor was 29 years old, he became the father of Terah.
25 Y vivió Nacor, después de haber engendrado a Táreh, ciento diez y nueve años; y engendró hijos e hijas.
After Terah was born, Nahor lived 119 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
26 Táreh tenía setenta años cuando engendró a Abram, a Nacor y a Aram.
When Terah was 70 years old, his son Abram was born. Later, two other sons, Nahor and Haran were born.
27 Estos son los descendientes de Táreh. Táreh engendró a Abram, a Nacor y a Aram; Aram engendró a Lot.
(This is/I will now give) a list of the descendants of Terah: Terah’s sons were Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran’s son was named Lot.
28 Y murió Aram, antes de su padre Táreh, en el país de su nacimiento, en Ur de los caldeos.
Haran died before his father died. He died in Ur [city] in Chaldea land, where he was born.
29 Abram y Nacor tomaron para sí mujeres. El nombre de la mujer de Abram era Sarai, y el nombre de la mujer de Nacor, Milcá, hija de Aram, padre de Milcá y padre de Jescá.
Abram and Nahor both married. Abram’s wife was named Sarai, and Nahor’s wife was named Milcah. Milcah and her younger sister Iscah were the daughters of Haran.
30 Era Sarai estéril y no tenía hijo.
Sarai was unable to bear any children.
31 Y tomó Táreh a Abram su hijo, y a Lot, hijo de su hijo de Aram, su nieto, y a Sarai, su nuera, mujer de su hijo Abram; y salieron juntos de Ur de los caldeos, para dirigirse al país de Canaán. Y llegaron a Harán, donde se quedaron.
Terah decided to leave Ur and go to live in Canaan land. So he took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and Abram’s wife Sarai with him. But instead of going to Canaan, they stopped at Haran [town] and lived there.
32 Y fueron los días de Táreh doscientos cinco años; y murió Táreh en Harán.
When Terah was 205 years old, he died there in Haran.
