Éxodo 18
1 Jetró, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, supo todo lo que había hecho Dios en favor de Moisés e Israel, su pueblo: que Yahvé había sacado a Israel de Egipto.
Moses' father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard about everything God had done for Moses and his people the Israelites, and how the Lord had led them out of Egypt.
2 Y tomó Jetró, suegro de Moisés, a Seforá, mujer de Moisés, después de haberla (Moisés) despedido;
When Moses had sent home his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro had welcomed her,
3 y a los dos hijos de este, de los cuales uno se llamaba Gersom, pues había dicho (Moisés): “Soy un extranjero en tierra extraña.”
together with her two sons. One son was named Gershom, for Moses had said, “I have been a foreigner in a foreign land.”
4 El otro se llamaba Eliéser, porque (Moisés) había dicho: “El Dios de mi padre fue mi protector y me ha librado de la espada del Faraón.”
The other son was named Eliezer, because Moses had said, “The God of my father was my helper, and saved me from death at Pharaoh's hand.”
5 Vino, pues, Jetró, suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la mujer de este, al desierto, donde acampaba junto al monte de Dios.
Moses' father-in-law Jethro, together with Moses' wife and sons, came to see him in the desert at the camp near the mountain of God.
6 Y envió a decir a Moisés: “Yo, Jetró, tu suegro, vengo a ti con tu mujer, y con ella están sus dos hijos.”
Moses was told beforehand, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to see you together with your wife and her two sons.”
7 Moisés salió al encuentro de su suegro, se prosternó y le besó. Y después de preguntarse mutuamente por su salud entraron en la tienda.
Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They asked each other how they were and then went into the tent.
8 Luego contó Moisés a su suegro todo lo que Yahvé había hecho al Faraón y a los egipcios, en favor de Israel; y todos los trabajos sufridos en el camino y cómo Yahvé los había librado.
Moses told his father-in-law about everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians on behalf of the Israelites, about all the troubles they had experienced on the way, and about how the Lord had saved them.
9 Jetró se alegró de todo el bien que Yahvé había hecho a Israel, librándolo de la mano de los egipcios.
Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the Lord had done for Israel when he'd saved them from the Egyptians.
10 Y dijo Jetró: “¡Bendito sea Yahvé que os ha librado de la mano de los egipcios y de la mano del Faraón y ha salvado al pueblo del poder de los egipcios!
Jethro announced, “May the Lord be blessed, who saved you from the Egyptians and from Pharaoh.
11 Ahora acabo de conocer que Yahvé es más grande que todos los dioses; pues en aquello mismo en que ellos se ensoberbecieron los ha castigado.”
This is so convincing to me that the Lord is greater than all other gods, for he saved the people from the Egyptians when they acted so arrogantly towards the Israelites.”
12 Después tomó Jetró, suegro de Moisés, un holocausto y sacrificios para (ofrecerlos) a Dios; y Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel fueron a comer con el suegro de Moisés en presencia de Dios.
Then Jethro presented a burnt offering and sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with him in God's presence.
13 Al día siguiente se sentó Moisés para juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estaba delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.
The following day Moses sat as a judge for the people, and they presented their cases to him from morning to evening.
14 Vio el suegro de Moisés todo lo que hacía para con el pueblo, y dijo: “¿Qué es esto que haces con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, y todo el pueblo permanece parado alrededor tuyo desde la mañana hasta la tarde?”
When his father-in-law saw everything that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What's all this you're doing for the people? Why are you sitting alone as judge, with everyone presenting their cases to you from morning to evening?”
15 Contestó Moisés a su suegro: “Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.
“Because the people come to me to ask God for his decision,” Moses replied.
16 Cuando tienen un pleito, vienen a mí; y yo juzgo entre unos y otros, dándoles a conocer los preceptos de Dios y sus leyes.”
“When they argue over something, the case is brought before me to decide between one them, and I explain to them the God's laws and regulations.”
17 Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: “No está bien lo que haces.
Jethro told him, “What you're doing is not the best.
18 Te cansarás demasiado, tú y este pueblo que contigo está; porque este trabajo es superior a tus fuerzas; no podrás hacerlo tú solo.
You, and these people who come to you, are all going to wear yourselves out, because the workload is far too heavy. You can't handle it alone.
19 Oye, pues, ahora mi voz; yo te doy un consejo, y Dios sea contigo. Sé tú solamente el representante del pueblo delante de Dios, al cual presentarás los asuntos.
So please listen to me. I'm going to give you some advice, and God will be with you. Yes, you must continue to be the people's representative before God, and take their cases to him.
20 Enséñales los preceptos y las leyes, y dales a conocer el camino que deben seguir, y las obras que han de practicar.
Go on teaching them the laws and regulations. Show them how to live and the work they are to do.
21 Y escoge de entre el pueblo hombres capaces, temerosos de Dios, hombres fieles y enemigos de la avaricia, y constitúyelos sobre ellos como jefes de mil, jefes de cien, jefes de cincuenta y jefes de diez.
But now you should choose men who are competent from among the people, men who respect God and who are trustworthy and not corrupt. Put them in charge of the people as leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
22 Ellos sean jueces del pueblo en todo tiempo; todo caso importante llévenlo a ti, mas en todos los asuntos de menor importancia decidan ellos. Así se aliviará tu carga, llevándola ellos contigo.
These men are to judge the people on a continuing basis. Major issues they can bring to you, but they can decide all the small matters themselves. In this way your burden will be made lighter as they share it with you.
23 Si haces esto, y Dios te lo manda, podrás sostenerte, y por su parte todo este pueblo podrá volver en paz a su lugar.”
If you follow my advice, and if it's what God tells you to do, then you will be able to survive, and all these people can go home satisfied that their cases have been heard.”
24 Moisés escuchó la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que había dicho.
Moses listened to what his father-in-law said and followed all his advice.
25 Escogió, pues, Moisés hombres capaces de entre todo Israel, y los constituyó jefes del pueblo, jefes de mil, jefes de cien, jefes de cincuenta y jefes de diez.
So Moses chose competent men from all of Israel and put them in charge of the people as leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
26 Estos juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo; los asuntos graves los llevaban a Moisés; mas en todos los asuntos menores decidían ellos mismos.
They acted as judges for the people on a continuing basis. They brought the difficult cases to Moses, but they would judge the small matters themselves.
27 Después despidió Moisés a su suegro, el cual se volvió a su tierra.
Then Moses sent Jethro on his way, and he went back to his own country.
