Eclesiastés 7
1 Más vale la buena reputación que preciosos ungüentos, y más el día de la muerte que el del nacimiento.
A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.
2 Mejor es ir a la casa del luto que a la casa del festín; pues aquella (recuerda) el fin de todos los hombres, y el viviente se pone a reflexionar.
It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
3 Mejor es el pesar que la risa, pues la tristeza del rostro es medicina para el corazón.
Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4 El corazón de los sabios está en la casa del luto, y el de los necios en la casa del placer.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 Más vale oír la reprensión del sabio, que escuchar el cantar de los necios;
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 porque como el crepitar de los espinos debajo de la olla, así es la risa de los necios. Y también esto es vanidad.
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
7 Porque la vejación conturba al sabio, y las dádivas corrompen el corazón.
Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
8 Mejor es el fin de una cosa que sus comienzos; y vale más el hombre sufrido que el arrogante.
Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9 No seas ligero en airarte; la ira reside en el seno de los insensatos.
Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
10 No preguntes: “¿Por qué los tiempos antiguos fueron mejores que estos?”, porque no es sabiduría el preguntarlo.
Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
11 Cosa buena es la sabiduría con bienes materiales, y de gran provecho para los que ven el sol.
Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
12 Escudo es la sabiduría, y escudo es el dinero, pero el conocimiento de la sabiduría tiene la ventaja de dar vida a su poseedor.
For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
13 Considera la obra de Dios: ¿Quién podrá enderezar lo que Él encorvó?
Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
14 En el día de la prosperidad goza de la prosperidad, y en el día de la adversidad ten presente que Dios hizo al uno como al otro, a fin de que el hombre nada sepa de lo que ha de venir después de Él.
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
15 Todo lo he visto en los días de mi vanidad: al justo, que perece en medio de su justicia, y al malvado, que vive largo tiempo en medio de sus iniquidades.
All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16 No quieras ser demasiado justo, ni demasiado sabio. ¿Por qué quieres perderte?
Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
17 No hagas mucho mal, ni seas insensato. ¿Por qué quieres morir antes de tiempo?
Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
18 Bueno es retener lo uno, sin dejar de tu mano lo otro; porque quien teme a Dios, evita todos esos (excesos).
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
19 La sabiduría da al sabio más fuerzas que diez poderosos que hay en la ciudad.
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
20 Porque no hay sobre la tierra hombre justo que obre bien y no peque nunca.
For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 No prestes atención a todas las palabras que se dicen, no sea que oigas a tu siervo hablar mal de ti.
Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22 Pues bien sabe tu conciencia que también tú muchas veces has murmurado de otros.
For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23 He probado todo esto por medio de la sabiduría. Me dije “Quiero ser sabio”, mas la (sabiduría) está lejos de mí.
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
24 Lo que se queda lejos y es más profundo, ¿quién podrá alcanzarlo?
That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25 Apliqué mi corazón para conocer, investigar y buscar la sabiduría y la razón de ser (de las cosas), y para conocer la maldad de la insensatez, la necedad y la locura,
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
26 y hallé que más amarga que la muerte es aquella mujer cuyo corazón es lazo y red, y cuyas manos son cadenas. Quien agrada a Dios, escapa de ella, pero el pecador quedará preso en sus lazos.
And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 He aquí lo que hallé, dice el Predicador, contemplando una cosa tras otra para averiguar sus razones,
Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
28 las cuales busca todavía mi alma, sin poder encontrarlas. Entre mil hallé un hombre, pero no una mujer entre otras tantas mujeres.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 Pero esto hallé; nótalo bien: Dios creó al hombre recto; mas ellos se entregaron a muchos vanos pensamientos.
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
