Eclesiastés 10
1 Moscas muertas infectan y corrompen el ungüento del perfumista; así una leve locura es mengua de la sabiduría y de la gloria.
Dead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to produce an evil odour; so does a little folly outweigh wisdom and honour.
2 El corazón del sabio está en su mano derecha, el del necio en su izquierda.
A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left.
3 Por cualquier camino que vaya el necio le falta el tino, y declara a cada uno que es un necio.
Yes also when the fool walks by the way, his understanding fails him, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.
4 No dejes tu lugar si la ira del que manda se enciende contra ti; porque la mansedumbre calma graves errores.
If the spirit of the ruler rises up against you, don’t leave your place; for gentleness lays great offences to rest.
5 Hay un mal que he visto debajo del sol, una especie de errores que provienen del príncipe:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, the sort of error which proceeds from the ruler.
6 la necedad elevada a los puestos más altos, y los señores sentados abajo.
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.
7 Vi a esclavos ir a caballo, y a príncipes andar sobre la tierra como esclavos.
I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking like servants on the earth.
8 Quien cava una fosa, en ella caerá, y quien destruye un vallado le muerde la serpiente.
He who digs a pit may fall into it; and whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.
9 El que rueda piedras se lastima con ellas, y quien parte leña corre peligro de herirse.
Whoever carves out stones may be injured by them. Whoever splits wood may be endangered by it.
10 Si el hierro se embota y no se aguza el filo, se requiere mayor esfuerzo, pero la sabiduría halla la ventaja.
If the axe is blunt, and one doesn’t sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but skill brings success.
11 Si muerde la serpiente por fallar el encantamiento, ¿qué provecho tiene el encantador?
If the snake bites before it is charmed, then is there no profit for the charmer’s tongue.
12 En la boca del sabio las palabras son llenas de gracia, mas al necio le devoran sus labios.
The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips.
13 El principio de las palabras de su boca es necedad, y el fin de su hablar es locura perniciosa.
The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
14 El necio habla mucho. Ignora el hombre lo que pasó; y lo que después de él sucederá ¿quién se lo manifiesta?
A fool also multiplies words. Man doesn’t know what will be; and that which will be after him, who can tell him?
15 Al necio le fatigan sus afanes, ni siquiera sabe por dónde se va a la ciudad.
The labour of fools wearies every one of them; for he doesn’t know how to go to the city.
16 ¡Ay de ti, país, cuando por rey tienes a un niño, y tus príncipes banquetean ya a la mañana!
Woe to you, land, when your king is a child, and your princes eat in the morning!
17 ¡Dichoso tú, oh, país, cuando tu rey es hijo de nobles, y tus príncipes comen a su tiempo, para sustentarse, y no para embriagarse!
Happy are you, land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 A causa de la pereza se desploma la techumbre, y por flojedad de manos será toda la casa una gotera.
By slothfulness the roof sinks in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaks.
19 Para gozar se hacen convites; el vino hace alegre la vida, y la plata sirve para todo.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes the life glad; and money is the answer for all things.
20 Ni aun en tu pensamiento maldigas al rey, y ni siquiera en el interior de tu alcoba hables mal del poderoso, porque un pájaro del cielo puede llevar tus palabras y denunciarte un alado.
Don’t curse the king, no, not in your thoughts; and don’t curse the rich in your bedroom, for a bird of the sky may carry your voice, and that which has wings may tell the matter.
