Daniel 1
1 El año tercero del reinado de Joakim, rey de Judá, vino Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia a Jerusalén y la asedió.
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and laid siege against it;
2 Y el Señor entregó en sus manos a Joakim, rey de Judá, y parte de los vasos de la Casa de Dios. Los llevó (Nabucodonosor) al país de Sinear, a la casa de su dios; y puso los vasos en la casa del tesoro de su dios.
and the Lord gave into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, and a part of the vessels of the house of God, and he brought them into the land of Shinar, into the house of his gods, —and, the vessels, brought he into the treasure-house of his gods.
3 Y dijo el rey a Aspenaz, prefecto de los eunucos, que trajese de los hijos de Israel, del linaje real y de los príncipes,
Then did the king give word to Ashpenaz, the chief of his eunuchs, —that he should bring in, of the sons of Israel, even of the seed royal, and of the nobles,
4 algunos niños que no tuviesen ningún defecto, de hermosa figura, instruidos en toda sabiduría, dotados de saber, prudentes, inteligentes y aptos para estar en el palacio del rey y aprender la escritura y la lengua de los caldeos.
youths in whom was no blemish, but comely of countenance, and skilful in all wisdom, and possessed of knowledge, and able to impart instruction, and who had vigour in them, to stand in the palace of the king, —and that they should be taught the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5 El rey les asignó una ración diaria de los escogidos manjares de la mesa real, y del vino que él mismo bebía, y mandó que los alimentasen así por tres años para que al final de ellos sirviesen al rey.
And the king appointed them the provision of each day upon its day, out of the delicacies of the king and out of the wine which he drank, and so to let them grow three years, —and, at the end thereof, that they should stand before the king.
6 Entre ellos se hallaron, de los hijos de Judá: Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías;
Now there were, among them, out of the sons of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah;
7 a los cuales el prefecto de los eunucos les puso (nuevos) nombres; a Daniel le llamó Baltasar; a Ananías, Sidrac; a Misael, Misac; y a Azarías, Abdénago.
and the ruler of the eunuchs gave them names, —yea he gave to Daniel the name of Belteshazzar, and to Hananiah of Shadrach, and to Mishael of Meshach, and to Azariah of Abed-nego.
8 Daniel se propuso en su corazón no contaminarse con los manjares escogidos del rey, ni con el vino que él bebía; por lo cual pidió al prefecto de los eunucos que no le (obligara) a contaminarse.
But Daniel laid it upon his heart, that he would not defile himself with the delicacies of the king, nor with the wine which he drank, —therefore sought he of the ruler of the eunuchs, that he might not defile himself.
9 Y Dios hizo que Daniel hallase gracia y benevolencia ante el prefecto de los eunucos.
But, although God had brought Daniel into lovingkindness and tender compassion, before the ruler of the eunuchs,
10 Dijo el prefecto de los eunucos a Daniel: “Temo al rey mi señor, el cual ha dispuesto lo que debéis comer y beber. ¿Por qué ha de ver vuestras caras más flacas que las de los jóvenes de vuestra edad? Así me haríais culpable ante el rey.”
yet said the ruler of the eunuchs unto Daniel, I do fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink, —for why should he see your faces more sad than those of the youths of your own age? so should ye bring me under the penalty of mine own head unto the king.
11 Respondió entonces Daniel a Malasar, al cual el prefecto de los eunucos había encargado el cuidado de Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías:
Then said Daniel, unto the overseer whom the ruler of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12 Te suplico que hagas con tus siervos una prueba de diez días; dénsenos legumbres para comer y agua para beber;
I pray thee—prove thy servants, ten days, —and let them give us vegetable food, that we may eat, and water that we may drink:
13 después examinarás nuestros semblantes y los semblantes de los jóvenes que comen de los manjares escogidos del rey; y según vieres, haz con tus siervos.”
then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenances of the youths who have been eating the delicacies of the king, —and, as thou shalt see, deal thou with thy servants.
14 Aceptó él su propuesta y los probó durante diez días.
So then he hearkened unto them, according to this word, —and proved them ten days;
15 Y al cabo de los diez días sus semblantes parecían mejores y más llenos que los de todos los jóvenes que comían de los escogidos manjares del rey.
and, at the end of ten days, their countenances appeared more comely, and fatter in flesh, —than any of the youths who had been eating the delicacies of the king.
16 Desde entonces Malasar se llevaba sus manjares escogidos y el vino que habían de beber, y les daba legumbres.
Thus it came about that the overseer continued taking away their delicacies, and the wine appointed them to drink, —and kept on giving them vegetable food.
17 Dios concedió a estos cuatro jóvenes conocimiento y entendimiento en todas las letras, y también sabiduría. Daniel entendía, además, toda suerte de visiones y sueños.
And, as for these four youths, God, gave them, knowledge and skill, in all learning and wisdom, —and, Daniel, had discernment, in all visions and dreams.
18 Cumplido el tiempo que el rey había señalado para que le fuesen presentados, les condujo el prefecto de los eunucos a la presencia de Nabucodonosor.
Now, at the end of the days after which the king had given word to bring them in, then did the ruler of the eunuchs bring them in, before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 El rey habló con ellos, y no se halló entre todos ellos ninguno como Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías; por lo que fueron admitidos al servicio del rey.
So then the king, spake with them, and there was not found, from among them all, one like unto Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, —therefore stood they before the king;
20 En todos los asuntos de sabiduría e inteligencia en que el rey les consultó, los halló diez veces superiores a todos los magos y adivinos de todo su reino.
and, in any matter of wisdom and discernment as to which the king, enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the sacred scribes—the magicians, who were in all his realm.
21 Permaneció Daniel hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.
Now Daniel continued, until the first year of Cyrus the king.
