2 Samuel 24

1 Una vez más se encendió la ira de Yahvé contra los israelitas, e instigó a David contra ellos, diciendo: “Anda y haz el censo de Israel y de Judá.”

And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go number Israel and Judah.

2 Dijo, pues, el rey a Joab, jefe del ejército que estaba con él: “Recorre todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Bersabee, y haced el censo del pueblo, para que yo sepa el número del mismo.”

For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who [was] with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.

3 Respondió Joab al rey: “¡Multiplique Yahvé, tu Dios, cien veces más el número actual del pueblo, y véanlo los ojos de mi señor el rey! Mas, ¿por qué quiere esto mi señor el rey?”

And Joab said to the king, Now the LORD thy God add to the people, how many soever they may be, a hundred-fold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see [it]: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

4 Pero la palabra del rey prevaleció sobre Joab y los jefes del ejército, de manera que Joab y los jefes del ejército salieron de la presencia del rey para hacer el censo del pueblo de Israel.

Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

5 Pasaron el Jordán y acamparon en Aroer, a la derecha de la ciudad que está en medio del valle de Gad. Luego fueron a Jazer,

And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that [lieth] in the midst of the river of Gad, and towards Jazer:

6 vinieron a Galaad y a la región situada al pie del Hermón, y después llegaron a Dan-Jaan y a los alrededores de Sidón,

Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,

7 de donde fueron a la fortaleza de Tiro, y a todas las ciudades de los heveos y de los cananeos; y al fin marcharon hacia el mediodía de Judá, a Bersabee.

And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, [even] to Beer-sheba.

8 Así recorrieron todo el país y al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días volvieron a Jerusalén.

So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

9 Joab dio al rey la suma del censo del pueblo; y fueron los de Israel ochocientos mil hombres de guerra que sacaban espada, y los de Judá, quinientos mil hombres.

And Joab presented the sum of the number of the people to the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah [were] five hundred thousand men.

10 Pero después que hubo contado el pueblo le remordió a David la conciencia. Y dijo David a Yahvé: “He pecado gravemente en lo que acabo de hacer. Perdona, pues, oh Yahvé, la iniquidad de tu siervo; porque he obrado muy neciamente.”

And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said to the LORD, I have sinned greatly in what I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

11 Al día siguiente, cuando David se levantó, habló Yahvé a Gad profeta, vidente de David, en estos términos:

For when David had risen in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

12 “Ve y di a David: Así dice Yahvé: Yo pongo delante de ti tres cosas; escógele una de ellas, y te la haré.”

Go and say to David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three [things]; choose thee one of them, that I may [do it] to thee.

13 Vino, pues, Gad a David, y se lo comunicó, diciendo: “¿Quieres que vengan sobre ti siete años de hambre en tu tierra?, ¿o que tú huyas durante tres meses perseguido por tus enemigos?, ¿o que haya tres días de peste en tu país? Delibera ahora y mira qué he de responder al que me envía.”

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, Shall seven years of famine come upon thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? Now consider, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

14 Entonces David respondió a Gad: “Me veo en muy grande angustia. ¡Caigamos, pues, en manos de Yahvé, porque grandes son sus misericordias, pero que no caiga yo en manos de los hombres!”

And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies [are] great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

15 Envió, pues, Yahvé una peste a Israel, desde aquella mañana hasta el tiempo señalado; y murieron, desde Dan hasta Bersabee, setenta mil hombres del pueblo.

So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

16 El ángel extendía ya su mano contra Jerusalén para desolarla; mas Yahvé se arrepintió del mal, y dijo al ángel que exterminaba al pueblo: “¡Basta ya; detén tu mano!” El ángel de Yahvé estaba entonces junto a la era de Areuna, el jebuseo.

And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thy hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing-place of Araunah the Jebusite.

17 Cuando David vio al ángel que hería al pueblo, dijo a Yahvé: “He aquí que yo soy el que he pecado; he obrado perversamente, pero estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? ¡Descarga, pues, tu mano sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre!”

And David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

18 Ese mismo día vino Gad a David y le dijo: “Sube, levanta un altar a Yahvé en la era de Areuna, el jebuseo.”

And Gad came that day to David, and said to him, Go up, rear an altar to the LORD in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

19 Subió, pues, David, conforme a la palabra de Gad, como se lo había mandado Yahvé.

And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.

20 Cuando Areuna, alzando los ojos, vio al rey y a sus siervos que venían hacia él, salió y se postró delante del rey, rostro en tierra.

And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming towards him: And Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.

21 Y dijo Areuna: “¿Por qué viene el rey mi señor a casa de su siervo?” David respondió: “Para comprarte esta era, a fin de edificar un altar a Yahvé, para que la plaga se retire de sobre el pueblo.”

And Araunah said, Why is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

22 Dijo entonces Areuna al rey: “Tome el rey mi señor y ofrezca como sacrificio lo que bien le parezca. Mira, aquí están los bueyes para el holocausto, y los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para la leña.

And Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what [seemeth] good to him: behold, [here are] oxen for burnt-sacrifice, and threshing-instruments and [other] instruments of the oxen for wood.

23 Todo esto, oh rey, regala Areuna al rey.” Areuna dijo además al rey: “¡Yahvé, tu Dios, te sea propicio!”

All these [things] did Araunah, [as] a king, give to the king. And Araunah said to the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.

24 Respondió el rey a Areuna: “No, sino que te lo compraré por plata, pues no quiero ofrecer a Yahvé mi Dios holocaustos que no me cuesten nada.” Y así compró David la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata.

And the king said to Araunah, No; but I will surely buy [it] of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt-offerings to the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

25 David erigió allí un altar a Yahvé y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios pacíficos; y Yahvé fue propicio al país, y se retiró la plaga de Israel.

And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So the LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
